Sir Walter Raleigh's American colonies
See my main page on Sir Walter for other aspects of his career. Interesting item 1 - Raleigh's first expedition landed and the crew asked the local Indians the name of the country. Raleigh then put a Bill before Parliament to confirm his rights to what translates as "You've got good clothes". Interesting item 2 - Raleigh never landed in North America - he just organised and part-financed the expeditions. However, there is a painting in the National Maritime Museum showing him claiming Virginia for England - evidently by an artist with a good sense of imagination.
Raleigh was such a favourite that the Queen refused to permit him to go off on expeditions. Thus it was the ships he provided and the men he instructed who actually went to the "New World" and brought back a number of new discoveries. Interesting item 3 - It was one of his employees (Thomas Hariot - see below) who brought back the first potato to the British Isles and this was first planted on Raleigh's Irish estate.

Its author was listened to, not so much because he was a scholar (which he certainly was by contemporary standards of scholarship), as because he embodied all the glories of the reign of Elizabeth I, which at the time of publication had already begun to be transfigured into a golden age" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 117).

      Raleigh, Sir Walter
      Courtier, Poet, and Adventurer
When he returned to England in 1581, Raleigh immediately went to court and soon became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. Whether he placed his cloak in the mud for Queen Elizabeth I or not, it seems fairly certain that his personal charm had much to do with his friendship with her. As an important courtier he was granted (1583) a wine monopoly, was knighted (1585), and was given vast estates in Ireland. Made warden of the stanneries (the tin mines of Cornwall and Devon) in 1585, Raleigh exhibited a genuine talent for administration, but he had already alienated too many important people to achieve real political power. He was appointed captain of the queen's guard in 1587, an office significant because it required constant attendance on Elizabeth. Roanoke Island , N.C. He was later named a member of the commission for the defense against Spain, but it is doubtful that he participated in the naval operations against the Spanish Armada (1588). Probably because of his conflict with Robert Devereux, 2d earl of

John Rae (1813-1893) was a Scottish explorer, surveyor, and surgeon who explored the Canadian Arctic. Rae made three voyages, in 1848-1849, 1851, and 1853-1854, to find the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin , who had disappeared together with his Arctic expedition. Rae surveyed and mapped over 1,400 miles (2255 km) of uncharted Canadian coastline. He also showed that King William Land was an island. On his third journey, Rae determined that Franklin and his expedition had died of starvation and exposure in the Arctic; Eskimos at Pelly Bay told Rae of Franklin's fate. During his Arctic expeditions, the hearty Rae walked over 23,000 miles (37000 km). RALEIGH, WALTER

The Sir Walter Gun Club has been established in the Raleigh area for over 35 years and, at it's present location near Creedmoor, N.C., has facilities for almost all types of shooting activities.
Until the end of 1988, the Club's primary range facilities were located near Knightdale, just east of Raleigh. However, due to the development in the area and a desire by club members to expand the facilities, the Club relocated to it's present location approximately 24 miles north of the Crabtree Valley Shopping Center. The club owns 143 acres on which basic pistol, rifle and shotgun ranges have been constructed. Future construction projects include a 300 yard high power rifle range currently under development, separate trap ranges, a bullseye pistol range, an archery field as well as a clubhouse, camping areas and hiking trails. The goal of the Club is to develop one of the best private shooting sports facilities in the State and possible anywhere in the eastern United States. The club currently supports a variety of shooting activities including IPSC Practical Pistol, Cowboy Action Matches, Skeet, High Power Rifle, Smallbore Rifle, Sporting Rifle and Bullseye Pistol. Special events sponsored or hosted by the club include the State Games of North Carolina, the Police Olympics and Scouting merit badge programs. Every December the IPSC shooting program sponsors a "Toys for Tots" match to support the Marine Corps Reserve.

    Bust of Sir Walter Ralegh

© NMM London During his own lifetime, Walter Ralegh was one of the best-known men in England. He was a courtier, politician, soldier, seaman, explorer, businessman, philosopher, historian and poet. Although nowadays his name is often spelt 'Raleigh’, he seems never to have used this version himself.
How did Walter Ralegh become a courtier?
Ralegh was the son of a Devonshire squire but his family, particularly on his mother's side, had some important connections. One of these was Humphrey Gilbert, an explorer and adventurer. He accompanied Ralegh on his first trip to the West Indies on a mission to attack Spanish ships laden with gold. Ralegh's family were fervent Protestants and believed that Catholic Spain was England's greatest enemy. Ralegh was ambitious and knew that to gain the notice of the Queen he had to prove himself as a soldier and explorer. For this reason he also went to Ireland (where his family had some land) and quelled a rebellion there. These exploits, and his prowess as a poet, enabled him to join the inner circle at Court.
Is the story of the cloak true?
