LONDON, Printed for R.H. Sir Walter Rawleighs farewell to his L ADY
the night before he was beheaded. Together with his advice concerning her, and
her Sonne. Dear
W IFE, Ou shall receive my last words in these my last lines; my love I send you that you may keepe it when I am dead, and my counsel that you may remember it when I am no more. I would not with my will present you sorrows (dear Besse ) let them go to the grave with me, and be buried in the dust. And seeing it is not the will of God that ever I shall see you any more in this life, beare my destruction gently, and with a heart like your selfe.
First, I send you all the thanks which my heart can conceive, or my words expresse, for your many troubles and cares taken for me, which though they have not taken effect as you wished, yet my debt to you is not lesse, but I shall never recompence it in this world.
Secondly, I beseech you even for the love you bare me living, that you do not hide your selfe many dayes, but by your travell seek to helpe your miserable fortune, and the right of your poore childe: Your mourning cannot availe me that I am but dust.

Who is Sir Walter Raleigh?
More than a friend to Elizabeth I, and courageous explorer of the New World, Sir Walter Raleigh had a dark side, and lived on the edge much of the time, until his beheading by an angry Crown in 1618.
Sir Walter Raleighs adventurous life in 16th century England focuses on two pivotal experiences: his prominence at Court, particularly that of Elizabeth I, and his seafaring explorations of the Americas. Born in 1552 in Hayes Barton, Devonshire, England, Raleigh went to fight in the French War of Religions on the Huguenot side at the age of roughly 15 or 16, then later studied at Oriel College in Oxford, and at the Middle Temple law college. He took up arms again in 1580, this time against the Irish rebels for independence in Munster. Always an outspoken man, Raleigh gained the notice of the Queen around this time for his unabashed criticism of English policy in Ireland, and soon he came under closer scrutiny of the Court. Apparently his candid ways were gilded with charm, however, and he soon became a favorite of the Queen, who knighted him in 1585. As Elizabeths reigning favorite, he began to earn royal favors including vast amounts of land in Munster, wealth and influential positions, one of which was as the monopoly holder of licenses for ale of wines, export of broadcloths and warden of the Cornish tin mines. bodyOffer(28008) So powerful was Raleigh at this time that it was often assumed Elizabeth would marry him, for there seemed no favor too large for her to grant him. He became vice-admiral of Devon and Cornwall and had a seat in Parliament. He was ultimately captain of the queens guard, a position that many consider may have put him close enough to the Queen that more personal favors on her part were also part of his benefits. Apparently Sir Walters gallant and chivalrous ways extended to more than bridging a watery gutter for passing noble ladies in the streets of London.

Sir Walter Raleigh (c.1552 - 1618)
Raleigh (or Ralegh) was an adventurer, courtier to Elizabeth I, navigator, author and poet. Some thought him a rogue, others thought him an explorer and author of great vision. Born in Devon, Raleigh fought with the Hugenot in France at an early age. After a failed 'voyage of discovery' (more likely a pirating expedition) to Spain, he went to Ireland where he suppressed a rebel uprising in Munster. Raleigh returned to England to the court of Elizabeth I, where he became a favorite of the Virgin Queen. She lavished him with land, knighted him and appointed him captain of the Queen's Guard (1587), which kept him close to the Queen's side. He was not popular with everyone, however, and it is thought that Shakespeare's Love's Labors Lost is a satire of Raleigh. Between 1584-89 he led an expedition to the New World and unsuccessfully colonized Roanoke Island, North Carolina and Virginia. He brought back potatoes and tobacco to Britain, changing the face of food and commerce at home. His place at court taken by the earl of Essex, Raleigh returned to Ireland in 1589 where he tended his estates and nurtured poet Edmund Spenser. In 1592, Raleigh returned to the court of Elizabeth after a privateering mission to Portugal. When the Queen discovered his secret marriage to one of her maids of honor, Elizabeth 'Bessy' Throckmorton, he was brought back to London and thrown into the Tower.

Biography of Sir Walter Raleigh by Christopher Smith
S I R W A L T E R
R A L E I G H Part 12: The Search for El Dorado Sir Walter now sailed for Cumana and the Venezuelan Coast in order to raid the Spanish settlements there. He lost four men in a skirmish, but some twenty-seven of his men also died of disease on board ship. He finally exchanged Berrio for a wounded Englishman and returned, disillusioned, to England to write one of the supreme works of Elizabethan travel literature, "The Discovery of the Large, Rich and Beautiful Empire of Guyana," the present day Venezuela.
