By , after a number of military and naval engagements in France Ireland and elsewhere, he had become established as a courtier and as Elizabeth's favourite. The story that he once took off an expensive cloak and threw it over a mud puddle for Queen Elizabeth to walk across illustrates Raleigh's flamboyant manner the event probably never happened, but everyone had come to expect that sort of thing from Raleigh, and Elizabeth always favored that kind of showmanship. Raleigh's scheme for colonisation in " Virginia " in North America (1585 onwards) ended in failure at Roanoke (

Modern History Sourcebook:
Sir Walter Raleigh
The Discovery of Guiana, 1595
Introductory Note Sir Walter Raleigh may be taken as the great typical figure of the age of Elizabeth. Courtier and statesman, soldier and sailor, scientist and man of letters, he engaged in almost all the main lines of public activity in his time, and was distinguished in them all. His father was a Devonshire gentleman of property, connected with many of the distinguished families of the south of England. Walter was born about 1552 and was educated at Oxford. He first saw military service in the Huguenot army in France in 1569, and in 1578 engaged, with his half-brother, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, in the first of his expeditions against the Spaniards. After some service in Ireland, he attracted the attention of the Queen, and rapidly rose to the perilous position of her chief favorite. With her approval, he fitted out two expeditions for the colonization of Virginia, neither of which did his royal mistress permit him to lead in person, and neither of which succeeded in establishing a permanent settlement. After about six years of high favor, Raleigh found his position at court endangered by the rivalry of Essex, and in 1592, on returning from convoying a squadron he had fitted out against the Spanish, he was thrown into the Tower by the orders of the Queen, who had discovered an intrigue between him and one of her ladies whom he subsequently married. He was ultimately released, engaged in various naval exploits, and in 1594 sailed for South America on the voyage described in the following narrative.

Sir Walter Raleigh was born at Hayes Barton which is on the edge of Woodbury Common, near the village of East Budleigh, Devon, England. Also see my separate page on Raleigh's attempts at the colonisation of America.
Sir Walter Raleigh.
His background.
He was born in 1552, during a time when his father leased Hayes Barton from the Duke family of Otterton. He was half brother to Sir Humphrey and Sir John Gilbert, from his mother's first marriage. He had a brother, Carew, and sister, Margaret. The spelling used in those days was rather erratic and thus "Raleigh" is just one of the (over 40) ways in which his surname was written. He used numerous of these spellings, with "Rawleigh", "Ralegh" and "Rawley" being more often used than the currently accepted version. His name was pronounced "raw lie" and it is said he is never known to have used the modern "Raleigh" spelling. He is known to have attended church in East Budleigh. The nearby sea-side town of Budleigh Salterton is the setting for the painting "The boyhood of Raleigh" by Millais (on show at the Tate Gallery, although from May 20th. to September 30th., 2000 it will be in an exhibition about Raleigh at the

Sir Walter 'the Unfortunate' Raleigh
Walter Raleigh (or perhaps Ralegh) was born in the farmhouse of Hayes near Budleigh Salterton Bay . He apparently did nothing of interest until 1580, when he tried to make up for his slow start by being twice arrested for dueling
Of course, his big claim to fame these days is the story that he once gallantly threw his cloak over a mud puddle so that Queen Elizabeth I wouldn't get her feet dirty. Like most of these nifty stories, it's almost certainly wrong. He actually had another legend as well, much less well-known these dayshe supposedly used a diamond to scrawl verses on a window pane in order to get the Queen's attention
Whether it was because of the verses or not, Walter became Sir Walter in 1584, which just goes to show you that a prison record doesn't always have to hold you back. The Queen chose him as a favorite and showered him with gifts of land and money, but, strangely, never gave him any high office . In return, he introduced tobacco from the New World to England, earning the gratitude of physicians everywhere on the British Isles.

SIR WALTER RALEGH
Is his name properly spelled RawleygheM as he signed it once in 1587, Rauley as he signed it until 1583, or Ralegh as he signed it more or less consistently from 1584 until his death in 1618? The spelling we prefer today is one he may never have used. How should his name be pronounced-rawly or rolly? Both questions and their several answers are appropriate to any consideration of this well-known, yet oddly enigmatic man. One of the great streams of events in modern history has been the expansion of western Europe, which carried European influence all over the world and brought the influence of distant places back to Europe in the backwash. Sir Walter Ralegh played a pivotal role in the expansion of England into the New World. We know little about his birth or childhood, other than that he was born about 1554 at Hayes Barton in Devonshire. In 1569 he was in France fighting for the Huguenots. In 1572 he was at Oriel College, Oxford; and 1575 he was at the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court. His career was exciting-fighting for his fellow Protestants in France; exploring the New World with his half-

http://www.who2.com/sirwalterraleigh.html
SIR WALTER RALEIGH Explorer / Suave Guy Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the grand scalawags of the Elizabethan Age. He made a name for himself fighting the Irish at Munster; later he was introduced at court and became a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I . Known for his wit and womanizing, Raleigh was in and out of Elizabeth's favor. (According to a famous legend he once laid his cloak over a mud puddle so that the Queen's feet would not be dirtied; the legend has long been disputed, but it may be true.) He also organized expeditions to the new world, popularized tobacco, and found time to write poetry on the side. Raleigh was not a favorite of Elizabeth's successor, James I, who kept Sir Walter imprisoned in the Tower of London for years and finally had him beheaded in 1618.
Extra credit : After Raleigh's execution, his head was embalmed and returned to his wife... Some sources say on the day he was beheaded Raleigh was granted a last smoke of tobacco establishing the tradition of giving a prisoner a last cigarette before execution.
Other leading figures of Raleigh's era include author William Shakespeare , sea captain Sir Francis Drake and astronomer Johannes Kepler ... Other beheaded English citizens include Anne Boleyn Lady Jane Grey and Sir Thomas More
