"A little too little: Re-reading Lorine Niedecker"
by Jenny Penberthy
Since the 1960s, studies and accounts of the Objectivists have, almost without exception, included Niedecker. Unlike Oppen, Rakosi, Reznikoff, and Zukofsky the male poets to whom the Objectivist label has stuck Niedecker was not represented in the Objectivist issue of Poetry 1931, nor was she included in The Objectivist Anthology of 1932. But her work has nonetheless come to be seen as Objectivist, even quintessentially Objectivist. Carl Rakosi has written of her as Objectivism's most representative practitioner: "With her the external world, the object is primary, it is most out front, and the subjective is most subsumed, so Objectivist is appropriate for her." Even the pattern of her publishing resembles that of Oppen and Rakosi: a first book published early, New Goose in 1946; and the next book much delayed North Central in 1966 can be considered the second, independent volume given that My Friend Tree in 1962 was essentially a reprint of selected New Goose poems. A gap of 20 years though for quite different reasons from those of Oppen and Rakosi. More of this later. Niedecker had an ambivalent connection to Objectivism. She certainly read and was excited by the original Objectivist statements but she did not regard herself as an Objectivist. At the time of Larry Dembo's Objectivist interviews for

    HISTORICAL SKETCH
Eleanor M. Bender began editing Open Places , a contemporary poetry and review magazine, out of her New York City apartment in 1966. With the support of private monies and subscriptions, the magazine was published sporadically. From its first appearance, Bender intended Open Places to be a quarterly publication, but this was not realized until 1968 when she moved to Columbia, Missouri. Through the assistance of Max Baird, Bender began printing the magazine quarterly as a Southern Critic publication. Together Bender and Baird produced issues 5 and 6. With issue 7/8

Layers of Knowledge: Illustrated Books from the Historical Collections, Health Sciences Libraries and Special Collections, Memorial Library
    March 17 - June 30, 2004
Layers, especially exposed layers, inform the visual language of discovery in a wide array of subjects. Drawing on the resources of the History of Medicine Collections at the Middleton Health Sciences Library and the Department of Special Collections in Memorial Library, this exhibit cuts across a variety of medical and scientific fields in exploring the depiction of layers in book illustrations. Examples range from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, and include printed flaps in anatomical illustrations, representations of geological strata, results of Roentgen rays and nature-printing, and parallel visual metaphors in widely differing subjects. The exhibit was designed by Micaela Sullivan-Fowler, Curator of the Historical Collections, Health Sciences Library, and Robin Rider, Curator of Special Collections, Memorial Library.

German professor of Egyptology Egyptology , a sub-field of archaeology, is the science or study of Egyptian antiquities, esp. Egyptian hieroglyphics. Egyptology investigates the range of Ancient Egyptian advanced culture (language, literature, history, religion, art, economics, and ethics) of the Egyptian history from the 5th millennium BC up to the end of Roman rule in the 4th century AD. Modern Egyptology begins in the year 1822, when Jean-François Champollion deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphics from the Rosetta Stone. Only with knowledge of Egyptian writing and language was it possible to study Ancient Egyptian culture.

    • Synchronic and diachronic Synchronic study of a language is concerned only with the language as it is at a given time; diachronic study is concerned with the history of a language or group of languages, and what structural changes have occurred.
