CARL RAKOSI from DAY BOOK If a poet is gifted, there are some distinct advantages to being slightly paranoid. In fact, one can make a great name for oneself in that way. This is because we are Americans and endow energy with charisma, in the arts particularly from the compressions boiler of a paranoia still within workable bounds, whose figurations it has become a vogue to regard as the character of the modern condition. And not without reason, for our nerves have been badgered so long by news reports that a sense of something ominous, perhaps cataclysmic has crossed the threshold and inclines us in that direction. In this vogue the only question is whether the figurations are well done.
Furthermore, there are things in this state which do actually work in the interests of art. The principal one is the paranoidal bind itself which locks a person into this system and forces him to work as a faithful servant to its exigencies. Since he can't get out, he can't be diverted by anything outside. Consequently all he has to do is follow the messages he is receiving in order to have perfect psychological consistency, dead certainty, inevitability, in the sense that he has to do this, and deadly accuracy, a combination of such great power that it produces artistic shivers which others can achieve only by the greatest insight and discipline.
In addition, from the inside boiler comes an intensity that passes for passion, and a brilliance as if the poet himself was in the flames of his agony and struggle.

Carl Rakosi
Born in Berlin in 1903, Carl Rakosi spent his early years in Hungary with his maternal grandparents. In 1910, he was brought to live in the United States with his father, who was a watchmaker, and his stepmother. The family lived in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin before Rakosi enrolled in the University of Chicago in 1920 (Buckeye).
During the 1920s and 1930s, Rakosi attended a number of universities, including the the University of Wisconsin, where he earned a B.A. (1924) and an M.A. (1926); the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Masters in Social Work (1940); and the University of Texas, where he studied English, law and medicine. Rakosi was a social worker and psychotherapist by profession, and from 1939 to 1965, during the height of his professional career, he ceased writing poetry (Buckeye).
Rakosi's late career as a poet has been marked by increased critical attention. In 1996, he received the PEN Center USA West award for his Poems, 1923-1941
His books of poetry include Selected Poems Amulet Collected Poems (1986) and The Old Poet's Tale

The Citizen (1996)
Prometheus is now chained
to a promontory
for daring to think that
the universe is limitless
and bare, held together
by rigor, with only his
random, rogue imagination
to cope with it.
For this the vulture
gnaws at his bowels. The terrain is fascinating but the citizen is chained to a real promontory as a brash new breed takes over in Congress, young, self-righteous, with an instant answer in ten or less words for every problem, and out of TV imaging steps a President, strong, up-beat, dependable, while in the corporate board room canny, fine-tuned men prepare the agenda for them, in the company books. Investors and billionaires swarm in the city. As on a distant planet devoid of public events a beggar stands most patiently with a tin cup. And everywhere the same old working man, his nose to the grindstone, expecting nothing, not knowing where to turn. Like Prometheus, the citizen, damn this debasement! Oh, citizen! Collected Poems was published in 1986 by the National Poetry Foundation. His

"Carl Rakosi's determined honesty and reductive rhetoric with its ungainsayable plainsong have made a measure for all conduct of words in the attempt to find an active poetry in the fact of lives without power."Robert Creeley A conversation with CARL RAKOSI on the occasion of his 99th birthday - via live audiocast - 7 PM (eastern time), Wednesday, October 30, 2002 A recording was made of this program and it is available as a sound file (in Real format) here . Tom Devaney's introduction to the program is linked here . Excerpts from the program allow you to listen to Rakosi introduce and read his poem "Oh, Sestina" , read his poem "In What Sense I Am I" , and comment on his status as a communist poet in the 1930s. With great pleasure we invited friends and colleagues to join us with poet Carl Rakosi, who joined us from his home in San Francisco. The program was be audiocast live worldwide, introduced by poet Tom Devaney and co-moderated by Al Filreis. Many participated by coming to the Kelly Writers House at 3805 Locust Walk in Philadelphia, where we conversed directly with Rakosi by an amplified telephone connection. That conversation was audiocast, and thus some 40 others joined us, wherever they were, by making a simple connection to the web.

On Carl Rakosi's "The Menage" [Editor's noteWe have included general comments that are directly relevant to "The Menage"] Linda Barnes His canon is, in fact, an eclectically erudite one. "The Menage" draws from a dictionary: ... baby's breath, 'a tall herb
bearing numerous small,
fragrant white flowers.' from Chaucer: 'What makes you so fresh,
my Wife of Bath'?
What makes you so silly,
o bright hen?' and from nursery rhymes:
old shoe, old shoe.
That's for you to find out,
if you can.' "The Menage" begins with a consideration of jonquils in a glass; the poet is interrupted by a familiar voice which "broke into the wood" and a mock-pastoral conversation between the lovers ensues. Rakosi deals wittily with the natural background which the first part of the poem has provided: (a mock chase and capture).
