Edwin D. Floyd, University of Pittsburgh Indo-European poetic formulas in the fourth and fifth centuries A.D. Studies of Indo-European poetics have relied heavily on second and first millennia B. C. Vedic and Greek texts. Old Irish and Old English, first attested around 600 A.D., have also been used as providing valuable independent evidence, but little attention has been paid to "late" Sanskrit and Greek texts. Many of these, however, both (1) antedate all of the relevant Celtic or Germanic material and (2) offer crucial supporting evidence for the validity of going into the first millennium A.D. in the discussion of Indo-European poetics. One example is the connection of Greek himassein "to lash" with a divinity's overcoming a storm god, discussed by Watkins How to Kill a Dragon (1995: 448-459). Although focusing on archaic Greece, Watkins also refers (p. 459) to a "bizarre" group of passages in Nonnus, Dionysiaca . Additionally, there is an important parallel at Nonnus, Paraphrasis of John Gospel according to John Even the hoary correlation of Greek kleos aphthiton with Vedic sravah ... aksitam

Nonnus (2) of Panopolis. The name is very common, being properly an Egyptian title equivalent to Saint. Consequently confusion has arisen between this writer and others of the same name. He has been identified, with some probability, with a Nonnus whose son is mentioned by Synesius ( Ep. ad Anastas. ad Pyl. 102); and, with very little probability, with the deacon Nonnus, secretary at the council of Chalcedon, A.D. 452; with Nonnus, the bp. of Edessa, elected at the synod of Ephesus, A.D. 449; and with Nonnus the commentator on Gregory Nazianzen ( vide Bentley, Phalaris , ad in.). Life. He was a native of Panopolis in Egypt; cf. Eudoxia, s.v. Agathias, iv. p. 128; and an epigram in Anth. Graeca , i. p. 140. He is classed by Agathias among oi neoi poihtai , and this, supported by a comparison of his poems with other late epic writers, makes it probable that he wrote at the end of the 4th and beginning of the 5th cents. A.D. Beyond this nothing is known for certain. His Dionysiaca shews frequently a knowledge of astronomy (cf. vi. 60; xxv.; xxxviii. 4), and a special interest in Berytus (xli.), Tyre (xl.), and Athens (xlvii.), but whether from a personal acquaintance with these towns is uncertain. In iv. 250 the discoveries of Cadmus are traced to Egypt, but otherwise there is no reference to his native country. The whole tone of the

Understanding Middle-Earth: Essays on Tolkiens Middle-Earth > Customer Review #1: Surpasses Visualizing Middle-earth in every way

Michael Martinez has been enchanting me and other readers for years. He has a gift for uncovering so many wonderful details about Middle-earth. He follows my heart into Middle-earth itself and wanders joyfully through the imagination of J.R.R. Tolkien. Mr. Martinez has shamefully been cast in the role of villain by many people who favor the medieval interpretation of The Lord of the Rings. I found his essay, "Of thegns and kings and rangers and things", to be enlightening and a very gracious argument in favor of the medieval point of view. The case for feudalism is Eriador is made so plain and clear, I do not think it will ever be refuted. The introduction, like so many of the essays in this book, is a joyous revision of an essay Mr. Martinez had published on the Web. Expanded and embroidered with wonderful detail and commentary not provided on the Web site, Mr. Martinez browse of the COMPLEAT Middle-earth library is a mesmerizing review of the sources. And as he is wont to do, he drops a bread crumb which leaves the reader wanting more: he mentions an unpublished history of The Hobbit. Where oh where is this book?

    The Martyrdom of Polycarp
(The Encyclical Epistle of the Church at Smyrna, Concerning the Martyrdom of St. Polycarp) The Church of God which sojourns at Smyrna, to the Church of God sojourning in Philomelium, and to all the congregations of the Holy and Catholic Church in every place: Mercy, peace, and love from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, be multiplied. CHAPTER I SUBJECT OF WHICH WE WRITE. We have written to you, brethren, as to what relates to the martyrs, and especially to the blessed Polycarp, who put an end to the persecution, having, as it were, set a seal upon it by his martyrdom. For almost all the events that happened previously [to this one], took place that the Lord might show us from above a martyrdom becoming the Gospel. For he waited to be delivered up, even as the Lord had done, that we also might become his followers, while we look not merely at what concerns ourselves but have regard also to our neighbours. For it is the part of a true and well-founded love, not only to wish one's self to be saved, but also all the brethren. CHAPTER II THE WONDERFUL CONSTANCY OF THE MARTYRS.
