Pynchon and Homer
By Joshua Glenn, Globe Staff, 10/19/2003 BACK IN JUNE, we expressed surprise that the famously reclusive novelist Thomas Pynchon had contributed a foreword to a new reissue of George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four." Just a few weeks later, however, the online diarist responsible for the website Ohdog.org reported another unexpected Pynchon sighting. While supervising a voiceover for a lipstick commercial in New York on July 24, the diarist, a TV editor, learned that a "chatty" Pynchon had been in the same studio that day recording a guest appearance for "The Simpsons." ADVERTISEMENT This may have struck some Pynchon-philes as an unlikely story. After all, in his ongoing efforts to resist being co-opted by an all-absorbing System, Pynchon has not only eschewed interviews, bookstore signings, and publicity photos. He has also refused to permit any representation of his likeness to appear on the television screen. When a Pynchon sighting became a plot point in a 1994 episode of NBC's "The John Larroquette Show," the show's producers sent Pynchon the script for his approval; the novelist reportedly vetoed a final scene that called for an extra playing him to be filmed from behind, walking away.

The Crying of Lot 49
Oedipa Maas, the protagonist of this Thomas Pynchon novel, lives in a world full of haphazard clues, dead ends, and meaningless signifiers. She stumbles through a bizarre string of coincidences to try to unravel what may or may not be a mystery. She cannot quite realize her condition. "...they'll call it paranoia.... Or you are hallucinating it. Or a plot has been mounted against you.... Or you are fantasying some such plot, in which case you are a nut, Oedipa, out of your skull." Oedipa struggles to draw meaning out of chaotic masses of information, and to construct a narrative out of randomness. In doing so, she begins to lose sense of her world. She considers two possibilities: "Another mode of meaning behind the obvious or none." She suspects there may be more to life, that there may be something signified after all, but, if there is, it is continually deferred. We leave Oedipa waiting. Oedipa, despite her lack of success, is driven towards discovery. She chases a transcendental meaning the existence of which she cannot be certain, but she pursues. Without pursuit, there is waiting. Hers is an America of drifters and squatters, ones and zeroes, speeding electricity and dead railroad cars, and the search for "the trigger for the unnamable act, the recognition, the Word." Waiting, moving...

The Thomas Pynchon Connection Thomas Pynchon (1937 - ) is a contemporary Amercian author of the first rank, creator of several marvelously intricate novels. Pynchon also seems to have spent some time listening closely to jazz in the late fifties, and the inclusion of allusions and echoes of that jazz scene provides additional enjoyment for those of us who also know jazz. Pynchon's first novel V (1961) includes a minor character named McClintic Sphere . Pynchon introduces him in a remarkable section (page 47 in my Bantam edition) with a whole series of links, allusions, echoes, and satirical reflections of the late 1950's and Ornette Coleman's legendary Five Spot appearance in Greenwich Village. The section starts with several of the New York cast arriving at a Greenwich Village nightclub called the V-Note:
  • V for the title of the novel and an elusive woman, object of a novel-long search by one of the characters.
  • V as in the Roman Numeral for Five = Five Spot. This famous club featured Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane (1957) in a legendary engagement; it was the nightclub where Ornette Coleman first opened in November 1959 (and where he played a number of times over the following years)
  • V-Note. The Note = Half Note. Another Greenwich Village club, and another venue at which Coleman played during the period

The History of Thomas Pynchon on TV
Books TV It's been talked about for what feels like forever, and on Sunday it will finally happen: Thomas Pynchon will appear on The Simpsons [Update: Here's our post containing screen caps and audio from the episode The famously reclusive author will not show even his animated face, though: he'll be wearing a paper bag over it. But at least we'll get to hear what he sounds like. The episode involves Marge writing a novel and is called "Diatribe of a Mad Housewife." Pynchon's association with the Simpsons began in an episode called " Little Girl in the Big Ten ," in which Lisa heads off to college, and is in awe of those around her. She asks a girl holding a copy of Gravity's Rainbow whether the girl is reading it. " Re reading it," she replies. But there are many other intersections of Pynchon and television.
    • Those who follow Pynchon's occasional transgressions of his own wall of secrecy will remember his relationship with The John Larroquette Show. Larroquette considers himself a pretty literate guy, and is a big fan of Pynchon, so he started slipping references to Pynchon into the show. Eventually, the writers sent a script mentioning TP off to the man himself. The script called for TP to be represented on camera by an extra with his back turned, but Pynchon vetoed that idea. Nonetheless, the plot of the episode revolves around a character who claimed he knows Pynchon. Before the show was cancelled, the writers managed to squeeze in a few more TP references, including one in which the the girl from

    What Thomas Pynchon Sounds Like
    Books TV
After much anticipation , Thomas Pynchon appeared on The Simpsons earlier tonight, with a paper bag over his animated head. The set-up: Marge writes a book and needs celebrity author endorsements of it. Pynchon gives her one, of sorts. Here's the mp3 and some screen captures: He's speaking as he's standing in front of a house with a flashing sign reading "Thomas Pynchon's House Come On In." The paper bag has a question mark painted on the forehead. He says, "Here's your quote: Thomas Pynchon loved this book...almost as much as he loves cameras." As a car drives by he yells, "Hey, over here! Have your picture taken with a reclusive author! Today only, we'll throw in a free autograph! But wait! There's more!" The voice after his is Tom Clancy's. ps. In case you were wondering, Pynchon says his own name "Pinch-On," not "Pinch-un." That settles that. Maybe John Le Carre will show up on The Simpsons next week, so we can solve that mystery, too.

The Walt Disney media empire set the standard for selling prepackaged dreamscapes to the general population. By reissuing classic animated films to little tykes every seven years or so, the Mickey Mouse icon became an implanted corporate meme on each brain passing through the wonder years. Thomas Pynchon, in print or in the flesh, comes around less often. As both mask and man, he’s as frequent as a plague of locusts. But considering how the world has met the expectations of such early work as Gravity's Rainbow (New York: Viking Press, 1973), it may be time to re-explore
