Biography of Thomas Pynchon
Thomas Ruggles Pynchon, Jr. was born on May 8, 1937 in Glen Cove, New York and grew up in the middle-class suburbs of Long Island. Pynchon attended Oyster Bay High School where his first authorial works were recorded. He was a frequent contributor to the high school newspaper, the Oyster Bay Purple and Gold, where he often wrote a column named "The Voice of the Hamster" under the pseudonyms: "Roscoe Stein," "Boscoe Stein," and "Bosc." In 1953, Pynchon graduated from high school as class salutatorian. He then began Cornell University, which he entered on a scholarship. Pynchon began studying engineering physics but later transferred to the English Department to study literature, where he would take a class from Vladimir Nabokov. His time at college was interrupted when Pynchon joined the Navy for a two year tour of duty, where he possibly served as a signal corpsman. Returning to Cornell, Pynchon finished his college education in 1958 and earned a B.A. Degree in English. Pynchon began writing stories during his time at Cornell. In addition, he worked on a campus literary journal with friend, Richard Fariña. Fariña would later write about Pynchon in his series of reminiscences, entitled Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone. In turn, Pynchon would comment on the dust jackets of Fariña's novels, exulting their shared ability to "spin the reader." Before this time came, however, Pynchon refused several fellowships in 1958, such as the Wilson Fellowship, and he turned down opportunities to teach creative writing for Cornell and to fill an editorial post for Esquire. Instead, Pynchon chose to live in Greenwich Village and focus on his writing. In 1959, Pynchon's first two short stories, which he had begun at Cornell, were published. "The Small Rain" was published in March, 1959 in the Cornell Writer and "Morality and Mercy in Vienna" was published soon after in Epoch.

So where does that leave Thomas Pynchon, whose current offering weighs in at close to eight hundred pages - and of often-impenetrable stylized "old english" text, no less? The real Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, America's original sub-dividers, took upon themselves the promethean task of imposing the first trace of order upon the wilderness that was the new world, drawing their famous line demarcating north and south. With his fanciful re-imagining of Messrs. Mason and Dixon, Pynchon has created a veritable universe, similarly bewildering and untamed, for readers to divide and conquer if they can. is a sprawling muddle of historical fact, surreal fancy, fable, fantasy, and occasional silliness, underpinned by the quiet insistence - supported, at times, more by faith than evidence - that somehow it all can make sense; that somehow, given enough courage, dogged determination, or blind luck, order can be either alchemically divined from chaos or forced upon it. Like American civilization, both past and present.

Once the world's largest chemical firm, IG Farben was broken up and ordered into trusteeship by the World War II allies in 1952. It continued operating as a trust to pay Nazi-era claims, and its shares are still traded on stock exchanges.
Bankruptcy became unavoidable after a deal to sell real estate holdings, the company's main remaining asset, fell through, trustee Volker Pollehn said.
If Farben's wartime factories included a synthetic rubber plant at Auschwitz, where 30,000 inmates worked until they died or were deemed unfit for work and sent to the gas chambers. E scritor estadounidense nacido en Glen Glove (Long Island). © epdlp Textos:

»Die Versteigerung von No. 49« The Crying of Lot 49. Zuerst: Philadelphia: Lippincott 1966.
Deutsche Erstausgabe: Rowohlt Verlag, Reinbek 1973; 156 Seiten, verschiedene Auflagen

It was followed by the shorter comic quest novel, The Crying of Lot 49 (1966), before his gargantuan tour-de-force (1973), which represents a major achievement in 20th-century literature, with its fantastic imagery and esoteric language, drawn from mathematics and science.

Thomas Pynchon (1937-)
b. May 8, 1937, Glen Cove, Long Island, N.Y., U.S.
American novelist and short-story writer whose works combine black humour and fantasy to depict human alienation in the chaos of modern society.
After earning his B.A. in English from Cornell University in 1958, Pynchon spent a year in Greenwich Village writingshort stories and working on a novel. In 1960 he was hired as a technical writer for Boeing Aircraft Corporation inSeattle, Wash. Two years later he decided to leave the companyand write full-time. In 1963 Pynchon won the@Faulkner Foundation Award for his first novel, V. (1963), a whimsical, cynically absurd tale of a middle-aged Englishman's@search for "V," an elusive, supernatural adventuress appearing in various guises at critical periods in European history. In his next book, The Crying of Lot 49 (1966), Pynchon described a woman's strange quest to discover the mysterious, conspiratorial Tristero System in a futuristic world of closed societies. The novel serves as a condemnation of modern industrialization.
Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973) is a tour de force in 20th-century literature. In exploring the dilemmas of human beings in the modern world, the story, which is set in an area of post-World War II Germany called "the Zone," centres on the wanderings of an American soldier who is one of many odd characters looking for a secret V-2 rocket that will supposedly break through the Earth's gravitational barrier when launched. The narrative is filled with descriptions of obsessive and paranoid fantasies, ridiculous and grotesque imagery, and esoteric mathematical and scientific language. For his efforts Pynchon received the National Book Award, and many critics deemed Gravity's Rainbow a visionary, apocalyptic masterpiece. Pynchon's next novel
