An Introduction to the Poetry of J.H. Prynne
by Rod Mengham and John Kinsella
Long respected as a teacher at Cambridge University and librarian at Gonville and Caius College, J.H. Prynne is possibly the most significant English poet of the late twentieth century. A lyrical experimentalist, his work has mesmerised and attracted readers from around the world for three decades. It has brought some to Cambridge in pursuit of new and unread texts, it has inspired students to develop their own ways of investigating the processes of poetry, to question the prescribed ways of reading, and led translators such as the late and brilliant Bernard Dubourg to dedicate themselves to exploring the nuances and variations in language and potentials of "meaning" that lie in its structures. Prynne's is a unique poetry. While being of a tradition that stretches back through Wordsworth, it is linguistically innovative and strongly inþuenced by poetic languages outside the traditional English poem - be they those of Ed Dorn or Charles Olson, contemporary Chinese poetry, or the theories of Martin Heidegger. Prynne's work is often referred to in semi-mystical terms as a result of its being difficult to get hold of. As Prynne has avoided mainstream publishing it has been assumed that he rejects the "general" readership, that his is a language of an informed and "alternative" clique. But it is the indifference of the mainstream publisher to "the work" itself that has been a problem for Prynne, and not the idea of availability. Actually, quite to the contrary, the affordable volume that can be read by anyone with an interest in what is going on in the poem would appeal to Prynne. What Prynne would reject is the easy path to comprehension.

On J.H. Prynne’s Rich in Vitamin C The title is interesting in this context, as “Rich in Vitamin C” is both a scientific fact that has particular ramifications with regards to healthy growth – “it’s supposed to ward off Colds!” (maybe I should capitalise the C in Cold) – and an advertising slogan. Prynne seems to be taking to task the commercialising of the personal – love, as well as the political-military dialogue. The references to a “screen”, “sight-lines”, and “pulse”, also suggest an interaction or collusiveness, even conflation of acts of the body – seeing, visualising, pumping blood – and the processes of the economic, military, and social machine. All of this is superbly united in four tight metrical nine-line stanzas. For Prynne, the field of the page, or maybe the space of the margins, the position of the text, and measurements of indentation and so on, are emphatic to meaning. They affect how something is said, and how it is read. For Prynne, the production of a poem, the production of a book, are as much part of the cycles of commercial fetishisation as the creation of the poem itself. So, it is the responsibility of the poet (and reader) to work at diminishing a degree of moral irresponsibility that overshadows the creation and production of art. Which explains why most Prynne works have been available in small print-run pamphlet forms published by presses for whom profit is not a motive. The forthcoming Poems are being published by a combination of Bloodaxe and the Australian presses, Folio and Fremantle Arts Centre Press, keeping costs down and avoiding, as much as possible, the usual dictates of the market.

, 1999, 440 pp. It has been commonplace to assume that American poetry of this century surpasses its British counterpart, certainly at least when one is speaking of a modernism infused with an avant-garde spirit: America can claim Pound and Williams, the objectivists, any number of schools which constituted the "New American Poetry," and the "Language" poets of the 1970’s; British poets who come to mind may include Jones and Bunting, but few others. Among non-conventional contemporary poets, only Tom Raworth is well-known on this side of the Atlantic, that is, with the exception of J.H. Prynne. The publication of Prynne’s Poems Prynne, a Marxist, has done reading tours in the United States with Ed Dorn, and early in his career wrote on Olson’s poetics. With studies of the likes of the projectivists and the Black Mountain school, as well as Celan and Rilke, he found himself among a group of experimental writers during the 1960s (which included John James, Wendy Mulford and Peter Riley) of which he would become the center-piece—the "Cambridge School." One aspect of Prynne’s work which jumps off the pages of his life-time work is his utilization of scientific phraseology. One finds, on going through these pages, such phrases as "glandular riot," "polythene lung," "petromorph," "sodium street-lights," "cretaceous ridge," "morainal deposits of the last deglaciation," "liassic beds," "limbic mid-brain system," "geodetic base vectors," "brietal perfusion," "di / methyl hydroxy / thiopentone," "Aliphatic hydro-carbons," "dimercaprol," and "sisal entreaty," to mention a few. Where many poets are content to keep their worlds to ninety-nine things—sun, moon, rose, stone, or river—Prynne captures the full ten thousand, composing in a poetic language that magisterially fuses the colloquial and the erudite, fully one of our times.

    The amazing Mr. Prynne
The novelist Peter Ackroyd is certain: "J.H.Prynne is without doubt the most formidable and accomplished poet in Britain today, a writer who has single handedly changed the vocabulary of expression." Donald Davie called him: "the most intelligent man in Cambridge." Ian Sinclair's novel, Radon Daughters, fictionalised Prynne as the prophetic and astounding Undark. And the Australian wunderkind of the radical pastoral, John Kinnsella, acknowledges Prynne as his North Star. Yet Prynne is private to the point of invisibility, refusing to be photographed for the media or ever give readings. His poetry, published in limited edition books and pamphlets by small presses, has been feverishly difficult to obtain outside specialist bookshops and libraries. Adding to this the lack of critical writings or even informed discussion beyond the Cambridge/London avant-garde poetry scene, means that the surface tension of the dominant and public literary culture in Britain has remained undisturbed. But with the publication of Prynne's collected Poems from Bloodaxe books a change is maybe coming.

The poetry of J. H. Prynne continues to divide critical opinion
over thirty years since it first began to appear in a series of
