The Proust Society of America San Francisco Chapter Proust Reading Group . Known traditionally in English as Remembrance of Things Past , the most recent translations render the title more accurately (although perhaps less poetically) as In Search of Lost Time . This site is intended to be of interest to lay readers of Proust, as well as to those doing research on the novel. When I began this site in 1998 one of my goals was to maintain a comprehensive set of links to other Web pages devoted to Proust. Recently the number of such pages has increased significantly. My list of links is now based on the quality of the site and on whether or not it duplicates information already found on this or other sites. I invite you to e-mail me with your comments, questions, and suggestions.

~MARCEL PROUST~ Ephemera Site This is an informal site dedicated to publishing English translations of Marcel Proust's lesser known writings. Pieces and letters which, as far as I am aware, are not available in translation elsewhere. I am fully aware of my own limitations as a translator and these are certain to contain many errors, inaccuracies and misunderstandings. All quotations from poetry I have attempted to translate strictly literally. Please mail me with any constructive criticisms, corrections or improvements. I have tried to approach my translations in a similar spirit to Proust's during his period of Ruskin translation. One of Marcel Proust's friends (Georges de Lauris) once commented that he "would have been hard put to it even to order a lamb chop in a restaurant in English". That pretty much sums up my fluency in French, but armed with a few dictionaries, a French grammar and a boundless love and respect for Proust's writing I offer up my clumsy tribute to the great man. Since I first created these web pages volume 4 of Selected Letters has now been published. A small number of the letters here have now been included in Joanna Kilmartin's excellent translations, but the vast majority of the material below still remains untranslated elsewhere. I will continue to add to these pages in the same spirit: this is a labour of love not of scholarship.

Marcel Proust: A short literary biography
Marcel Proust was born to bourgeois parents living in Paris. His father was a doctor and his mother came from a rich and cultured Jewish family. Beginning in his childhood and continuing throughout his life, Proust suffered from chronic asthma attacks. His literary talent became evident during his high school ( ) years. He began to frequent salons such as that of Mme Arman, a friend of Anatole France. Under the patronage of the latter, Proust published in 1896 his first book, Les Plaisirs et les Jours , a collection of short stories, essays and poems. It was not very successful. Proust had begun in autumn 1895 a novel which he later abandoned in autumn 1899 and never finished. It was finally published in 1952 as Jean Santeuil After this second setback, Proust devoted several years to translating and annotating the works of the English art historian John Ruskin. He published a number of articles on Ruskin, as well as two translations: La Bible d'Amiens in 1904 and in 1906. The prefaces to these early works anticipate Proust's subsequent stylistic and esthetic development. "Sur la lecture", the preface to

    Proust and Chandler
M y old friend Rich di Giulio interrupted a viewing of The Big Sleep one evening to leave a long-forgotten bit of dialogue on my answering machine. It had been at least a dozen years since I'd reread all the novels of Raymond Chandler, but they have remained on the shelf because I knew that one of these days I would certainly want to read them again. So The Big Sleep was right there where I'd left it, and in it was Phillip Marlowe's introduction to Marcel Proust in 1939.
S he wore brownish speckled tweeds, a mannish shirt and tie, hand-carved walking shoes. Her stockings were just as sheer as the day before, but she wasn't showing as much of her legs. Her black hair was glossy under a brown Robin Hood hat that m ight have cost as much as fifty dollars and looked as if you could have made it with one hand out of a desk blotter. "Well, you do get up," she said, wrinkling her nose at the faded red settee, the two odd semi-easy chairs, the net curtains that needed laundering and the boy's size library table with the venerable magazines on it to give the place a professional touch. "I was beginning to think perhaps you worked in bed, like Marcel Proust." "Who's he?" I put a cigarette in my mouth and stared at her. She looked a little pale and strained, but she looked like a girl who could function under a strain. "A French writer, a connoisseur in degenerates. You wouldn't know him."

    Marcel Proust
