Why Gandalf Never Married
1985 talk by Terry Pratchett
UKSFA Home I want to talk about magic, how magic is portrayed in fantasy, how fantasy literature has in fact contributed to a very distinct image of magic, and perhaps most importantly how the Western world in general has come to accept a very precise and extremely suspect image of magic users. I'd better say at the start that I don't actually believe in magic any more than I believe in astrology, because I'm a Taurean and we don't go in for all that weirdo occult stuff. But a couple of years ago I wrote a book called The Colour of Magic . It had some boffo laughs. It was an attempt to do for the classical fantasy universe what Blazing Saddles did for Westerns. It was also my tribute to twenty-five years of fantasy reading, which started when I was thirteen and read Lord of the Rings in 25 hours. That damn book was a halfbrick in the path of the bicycle of my life. I started reading fantasy books at the kind of speed you can only manage in your early teens. I panted for the stuff. I had a deprived childhood, you see. I had lots of other kids to play with and my parents bought me outdoor toys and refused to ill-treat me, so it never occurred to me to seek solitary consolation with a good book.

Commander Vimes sets off to work while anticipating the arrival of his first child. A serial killer is on the loose, having already killed two coppers, and Vimes and his men are hot on his trail. Finally, the killer Carcer is cornered on the roof of Unseen University. But an unexpected thunderstorm and the pent-up magic above the University causes Vimes and his prisoner to be shifted backward in time. When Vimes finally regains consciousness, he finds himself in an Ankh-Morpork that has no Vetinari ruling it with an iron grip and a young Samuel Vimes new to the police force. Just as he's figured this out he finds himself with the monks who monitor time. They explain that Vimes must make sure that his younger self ends up as the same Sam Vimes in the future or he may disappear completely.

Your browser does not support script advertise. EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE Discworld Divinity An interview with the man with a trademark floppy hat. No, not Indiana Jones (or even Dr Who), but ... Terry Pratchett. He talks about his latest works, Discworld and, well, the art of being Terry. Terry Pratchett is one of Britain's most successful fantasy authors. With his books constantly appearing at the top of the book charts and his latest book 'Nightwatch' being one of his most successful to date. I had the fortunate opportunity to interview Terry Pratchett on a cold January night as he was finishing his latest novel while battling with the joys of freeware and the scumware advertising it entails. SFC: 'The Last Hero' relies on Paul Kidby's illustrations as much as the written word. How much input did you have on each other's work? Terry Pratchett: I had a lot on his, but he had somewhat less on mine. I wrote 'The Last Hero' knowing that it was going to be illustrated, which was one reason why it was shorter than a full-length novel.

T he picture on the front of this book is of the 'Wee Free Men'. They are the head-banging, hard-drinking and rough tough pictsies of the title. They are 'well-hard' particularly on the farm cat that learns a lesson from them about not chasing birds. CHEEP CHEEP!
Tiffany, who is not very fond of her little brother, is a sensible girl who when confronted with a monster with eyes the size of soup plates checks the dimensions of the soup plates. Her boots seem to walk her and her dress is faded to blue from its many wearings by its many owners. She is however, a witch grown on chalk, which is apparently impossible. Despite the little brother being permanently sticky she is determined to rescue him from the Queen of Sssh...mustn't name her. Enlisting the help of the WFM, on the promise of Liniment for all, she sets off.
Pratchett has succeeded in populating his new tale with some memorable characters. The talking toad that attaches himself to Tiffany doesn't say 'follow the yellow sick toad' but many people have thought it did apparently.

Happy Blue Dog's Science Fiction and Fantasy Book review.

Books written by Terry Pratchett
Terry Pratchett: The Discworld Series
I recommend this series to people who love fantasy and possess even just a single ounce of humor. Pratchett caters to the absurd lunatic in us all, and delivers a very silly, very satisfying story on a pretty platter called Discworld. Most of the Discworld novels are complex satires of our own world. It is a fun, Saturday afternoon romp that lets folks laugh at the "in" jokes of the fantasy genre. Pratchett's Discworld novels are incredibly different and creative. These books are great little satires that will make you laugh out loud.
After reading some heavier material, I pick up a Discworld book and am always very pleased. I feel like lots of fantasy writers fail to write compelling stories because they spend most of their energy trying to convince the reader their world is real and gritty and serious. Not Terry Pratchett. There's not a serious bone in this series' body. It's funny from start to finish and slaps nearly every fantasy convention in the face, repeatedly, and without regret.

Check out website: www.orionbooks.co.uk C ohen the Barbarian is set on his last final quest, along with his friends the silver horde, they set out to return the first thing to be stolen from the gods. He can't always remember where he put his teeth but he can recall the old days of adventure when you didn't have to worry about silly things like lawyers, fences and civilisation. You didn't get threatened by writing and pieces of paper that were more dangerous than the sword. Most of all, he doesn't like the way gods let men grow old and die.
Lord Vetinaria and the wizards at the Unseen University become aware of Cohen's plans and realising the consequences employs a genius artist and inventor (sound familiar?) to come up with a rescue plan and save the world.
Reading this almost seems like reading a Discworld novel for the first time. It is full of the charm and humour of the early Discworld books. Many of the early characters such as Rincewind (now the unpaid Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography), Cohen and Death feature in this book, captured perfectly in both text, paint and drawing.

pub: Random House/Ebury Press. 414 page Paperback. Price: £ 6.99 (UK). ISBN: 0-091-88657 0) T he Science Of Discworld’, first published in 1999, represented a substantial departure for Terry Pratchett and the Discworld novels. It was not, as many may suspect, just another guide to the fictional universe and characters of Pratchett’s popular fantasy series. Instead, it was an original and largely successful attempt to combine a fictional world with the real one and to blur the lines of science fiction and science fact. After 25 novels, the Discworld universe could be seen as almost as established as our own, complete with its own ideas on life and death, religion, science and philosophy. It has creation myths – the turtle Great A’Tuin carries the world on its back – and death is a concept made real, as a character in black robes holding a scythe. It also runs largely on magic rather than science and gods are numerous and have their place, too.

H ome hunting for a property with ‘many special features’ in an area full of character and local colour? Try Ankh-Morpork. But be careful to bring a sense of irony. Discworld is not a safe place without it. Much of Terry Pratchett’s humour derives from metaphor made solid and subversive parallels with the human condition. This creates a relatively uncontentious platform from which to snipe. A politician making such observations about the voting masses usually willing to tolerate any amount of criticism, as long as it is not directed at them, would destroy their career. Most of us are druids at heart, with immolation of people with a different opinion being a useful way of settling an argument. Terry Pratchett is the only author, totally free of gravitas or apology, to take a stab at a convincing (pseudo) scientific explanation for magic. If black holes do exist, a tachyon might not be so preposterous after all. Discworld works on the Tinkerbell premise: belief can bring into being an entity while denial of something real, ie Gaspode, Foul Ole Ron’s talking dog, goes unnoticed because it is generally known that dogs are unable to talk.
