(click for larger image) Once upon a time, New York City was as delightful a place to live in as to visit. There were many amenities, as they say in brochures. One was something called Broadway, where dozens of plays opened each season, and thousands of people came to see them in an area which today resembles downtown Calcutta without, alas, that subcontinental city's deltine charm and intellectual rigor. 12210 words The full text of this piece is only available to subscribers of the Review 's electronic edition . The Wicked Pavilion is a sharp, cynical, and often hilarious look at the seamy side of the art world in postwar New York City. This is a place where the rich go slumming with bohemian artists in the Village, but everyone is always aware of the niceties of class distinction. It is also a place where the best thing an artist can do for his career is to die, a fact that plays a crucial role in the novel’s plot.

A Time to be Born: Dawn Powell
I have a huge affinity for the little known but recently rediscovered writer Dawn Powell. There's something so innocent about a book written a long time ago. (Powell wrote A Time to be Born in 1942). Powell never took a writing class. She never had a critique group. She was not part of any formal writer's group. Hell, I don't even think they had magazines like Writer's Digest etcetera back then. Those were the days when a person could just decide at an early age that they wanted to write and then set about doing it. And that's exactly what Dawn Powell did. She moved from Ohio to New York City and settled in Greenwich Village just before it became an artist's enclavein fact she is one of the artists who made it so. Then she did the woman thing where she marries and has a child. Except her husband was a huge drunk and her child was autistic. And still, she wrote. Many novels, book reviews, even plays. She was mildly esteemed in her time but dropped from the radar even before she died in the 60s.

Read another Dawn Powell novel yesterday, A Time to be Born . Nope, not a book for review. Just a pure pleasure book, which is what hers always are. Not to say she's a perfect writer or anything. One critic says she turned her books in too early, just one draft short of a more perfect novel. Her biographer claims that there are no records of Powell ever having been paid royalties for any of her novels, so maybe she wrote them fast to pay the bills. Then there's the other thing about her falling into obscurity even before her death.
Imperfect or not, I love her work. She's so funny and sharply observant and her characters have a depth of feeling that resonates. Dawn Powell's fictive world is social satire. She usually pits a country girl from Ohio (where Powell herself was born) against the city slickers in New York (where Powell moved to as a young woman seeking artistic freedommore about this in a minute). The country girl starts out speechlessly ignorant but little by little becomes wise to the ways of the Big City and somehow does it without losing her humanity. Yesterday's book stirred up something in me. First it made me think again about Powell, about her life-long struggle to be published and respected. She wrote novels, plays, and book reviews and never made much money on any of them. Always one step ahead of the bill collectors. She had a drinking problem, probably a result of her dashed hopes and dreams.

DawnPowell.org explores the life and work of a writer The New York Times called "one of the outstanding literary finds of the last quarter century." The site was developed for The Library of America to celebrate their publication of Dawn Powell's Complete Novels: 1930-1962 (in two volumes). Visually rich and full of unique content, the site plays an important part in the "Great Revival" of Dawn Powell. That revival began in 1981 when, after her works had spent several decades in obscurity, Gore Vidal declared Powell a "comic writer as good as Evelyn Waugh and better than Clemens" in an essay in the Antioch Review . To this effect, the site allows online materials to compliment "offline" publications, offering a deeper and more expansive view of Dawn Powell than can be gained elsewhere.

Alex Kuczynski takes a closer look at " gossip lit " for the Times Sunday Styles section, pegging a genre that encompasses The Nanny Diaries The Devil Wears Prada , and Bergdorf Blondes , which she describes as Plum Sykes' "minimally disguised memoir," with a withering assessment from Sykes' ex-beau to bolster the argument: Mr. Loeb said he had read a few chapters of Bergdorf Blondes before it was published. "I was not overjoyed," he said. "The things that are fictionalized no one is going to believe are fiction. And then there are details that I thought were private, and when you are in a relationship with someone, assume will remain private." He said he had no plans to read the entire book. Sykes makes her own case for distinguishing her novel from the others, which she says should properly be described as "assistant lit." In which case, then, one might propose that the nanny diarists et alia are treading a path blazed by, among others

DAWN POWELL AT HER BEST
Edited by Tim Page
452 pages. Steerforth Press. $28. So, we say to ourselves, another nearly forgotten writer exhumed, cleaned up, reissued and put on display with endorsements from Edmund Wilson, Diana Trilling and Gore Vidal. Then a friend says no, she's terrific, read her, and we do, and here it is, that infinitely distinguished thing, a dead writer so full of charm and derring-do that literature's canon makers should sit back, smile and say, Dawn Powell, where have you been all our lives? "Dawn Powell at Her Best" is edited by Tim Page, the chief music critic for Newsday, who is writing her biography. It contains two novels, eight stories and a short, lovely piece about fleeing Ohio ("We were on a farm with a new stepmother who didn't know what to do with us so she put us outdoors after breakfast and locked all the doors") and going to New York to write and live as she wanted to. Born in 1897, she moved to New York in 1917 and stayed there until she died in 1965. Fortunately, whether Powell's writings are peopled by provincial Ohio families or showy New York artists, the story of living the way one wants is not a self-reflective quest; it is a piecemeal journey filled with stops, starts and odd little detours. Her plots, her people and her prose wheel along, gathering complexity then crushing it flat, grinding to a stop for disappointment or disaster, starting up again at the first sign of longing, ambition or any other appetite. Powell wrote: "My novels are based on the fantastic designs made by real human beings earnestly laboring to maladjust themselves to fate." Her creed: "I give them their heads. They furnish their own nooses."

Dawn Powell
Born: November 28, 1896
Died: November 15, 1965 One of the few female satirists of the twentieth century, Dawn Powell realized early on that "you both confuse and anger people if you satirize the middle class." Unfortunately for them, the middle class was her favorite target. Described as "always sharp, never cranky," Powell and her work are reentering the public eye with a vengeance. As new readers are turning the cult favorite into a religion, they apply her criticism to our own time, and find many similarities. Although Dawn Powell was born on November 28, 1896, after she turned thirty, she would list her birth year as 1897. She was the second of three daughters of a Mt. Gilead , Ohio family. Powell never had much faith in the traditional family structure, once writing, "Any barroom brawl is better than the persistent pinpricks of the happy little family." Though harsh, her opinion is forgivable-her experience with the "happy little family" was extremely limited. When Dawn was seven years old, her mother died from what was believed to be a failed abortion. For four years the girls were spread around to various relatives; when their father remarried, they moved in with him and their new stepmother at a Cleveland farmhouse. Their father, an alcoholic, left the family, and their stepmother became severely abusive. After many attempts, all three of the Powell sisters ran away from home, though they remained close to each other for the rest of their lives. Dawn herself escaped when she was thirteen, after her stepmother burned her beloved notebooks. She moved in with her maternal aunt in

Books of a Lifetime
In Sight-Readings , Elizabeth Hardwick's recent collection of literary criticism, she offers the opinion that, "Sometimes very fine writers and scholars undertake biographies, and their productions have at least some claim to equity between the subject and the person putting on the shoes. Others hope to establish credentials previously lacking by hard work on the abounding materials left by a creative life. In any case, a biography appears to be thought of as a good project, one that can at the very least be accomplished by industry." If biographers work industriously, readers respond enthusiastically purchases of biographies and autobiographies are steadily growing; in 1997, 38 million biographies and autobiographies were purchased, compared to 32 million in 1996 and 30 million in 1995, according to The 1997 Consumer Research Study on Book Purchasing . If the flurry of biographies that have recently arrived at the Chronicle are any indication, the increase in purchases may simply be due to the abundance of bios out there. Just this fall, biographies of Bernard Shaw, Helen Keller, Diego Rivera, N.C. Wyeth, Max Lerner, Henri Matisse, Charles Lindbergh, Isaiah Berlin, and Stephen Sondheim, among many others, have been published. And KLRU's Mary Beth Rogers' Barbara Jordan: American Hero will be out soon. And oh yeah don't forget Jesus Christ (
