There is a touch of the melodramatic to Powell's first important work and least well-received, a novel set in turn-of-the-century rural Ohio - but the darkness is sparked with Powell's unmistakeable genius. True, some passages are florid and the prose rather purple, but there is absolutely no other way to tell so perfectly a tale of deception, betrayal, and fates shortcircuited and lives barely endured. The Truelove family is almost gothic in Powell's portrayal, what with their supressed desi...

Dawn Powell (1897-1965) received little attention in her lifetime, but her novels are now in print and accessible due to the critical efforts of Gore Vidal and Tim Page, among others. She is an "autobigraphical" writer, and her novels fall into two groups: 1. the earlier "Ohio" novels which are based on Powell's childhood and adolescence in small-town Ohio in the early 20th Century and 2. the later "New York novels which are heavily satirical and describe Greenwich Village where Powell spent ...

Yet she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared. Those in the market for a feminist icon could do worse than Dawn Powell. She prided herself on being a survivor, not a victim. She supported herself as a

Insight on the News
Oct 1, 2001 by Rex Roberts
Dawn Powell is still another author from the past enjoying renewed interest in her work. Perhaps it's dreary nostalgia for a better time that never existed, but the first half of the 20th century seems so much more interesting, writer-wise, than the 50 years that followed. For one thing, Marcel Proust, James Joyce and William Faulkner were reinventing narrative, their brilliance illuminating the early decades and beyond. For another, adults were still in charge of society and fiction reflected grown-up concerns. Most importantly, movies were in their infancy, television was not yet born and rock 'n' roll was a mere gleam in the eye of a Mississippi blues guitarist. Oh, what a falling off there was. As the century waned, so did literary aspirations. Writers increasingly embraced television and Tinseltown, a complete reversal from the days when Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald complained bitterly about hack work at studio scale. Gifted novelists continued to produce first-rate fiction, but readership dwindled as people exchanged plodding old print for luminous screens. Today, cocktailers are hard-pressed to hold a conversation about literature, since there's little consensus on serious authors, nor any great urgency to keep current, especially when cable TV, DVD and the Internet promise effortless enlightenment.

Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at 9:25 AM PT Dear Tim, I'm thrilled to speak to the undisputed president of the Dawn Powell Fan Club. We Dawnites ought to stick together. Sometimes a passion for Powell can still feel eccentric, like owning a hairless cat. When a first-edition Powell book goes up for auction on eBay, the same three or four of us bid; I've often thought we should join forces for some harmless price-fixing. Yet I've been told that thanks to you, the Dawn Powell revival is officially a done deal, her place at the table of American Lit all nicely set. Continue Article So my first question for you: How solid is the Powell revival? I certainly didn't see anyone reading her at the beach this summer. Nor do many of my academic colleagues know her work. They've heard of her, though. "Which one should I read?" they ask suspiciously.

Subject: Life on the Page and Off
Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at 7:58 AM PT The simple honest American believes in looking life straight in the TV and no nonsense. There is less and less connection between what he's doing and seeing and being and "Real Life," because what's really happening is the lie.
Dawn Powell, 1957 Dear Tim, Continue Article Presumably, we have now taken care of "Who the Hell Is Dawn Powell." Most of the country's readers of literary fiction still don't know, which is why the articles and reviews all need to cover the identical groundrevealing how you heroically rescued her papers from the moldy basementthus making it possible for potential readers to weary of the Powell Phenomenon before they even get to her work. And since her ideal readers are, I suspect, the people most churlishly resistant to hype, I fear we may see the eensiest backlash soon. Let us admit that the Letters are not the best introduction to Powell. Reading the letters of someone whose accomplishments you admire is voyeuristic in the best sense (as opposed to reading a stranger's mail, which is a peep-show). But for fans, her letters are delicious. Such wonderful balancing acts of literary bravura and homey friendship. They made me rue the triumph of e-maila sugar-rush, with no nutritional value. Hardly any of the writers I know go to this much trouble online. In fact, I'm not sure you can.
