By Dawn Powell Chapter One: The Early Diaries Introduction
Dawn Powell lived to write. In her case, this statement is not an empty phrase, nor is it an exaggeration. Powell was writing steadily by the time she was twelve; in the last year of her life, when she was mortally ill, her concerns were not so much with her failing health and ever-dwindling weight as with her inability to make headway on any of her writing projects.
Considering the difficulties Powell faced throughout most of her sixty-eight yearsan unconventional and sometimes deeply unhappy marital life, near-constant money troubles, the demands of a mentally and emotionally impaired son, heavy drinking that was debilitating at times, recurrent (and often mysterious) health problems, and what might now be described as a"bipolar"personalityit is astonishing that she wrote so prolifically and wrote so well. Besides her fifteen published novels, Powell left at least 100 short stories, half-a-dozen plays, an enormous quantity of book reviews and occasional pieces, thousands of personal letters, and her magnificent diaries.
Exactly when Powell began keeping a diary is unknown. She ran away from home around the age of twelve, because her stepmother had burned her notebooks and stories; that notorious bonfire may well have included some early diaries. A volume filled with observations, drawings, and poems, dating from after her runaway (circa 1910) survived into the late 1960s but has now apparently disappeared. During the summer of 1915, while working as a maid and waitress at a summer resort called the Shore Club on Lake Erie, Powell kept an occasional journal in a school notebook, addressed to an imaginary friend named"Woggs":

Powell, Dawn Powell, Dawn, , American novelist, b. Mt. Gilead, Ohio. She came to New York City in 1918 and settled several years later in Greenwich Village, where she spent most of the rest of her life and became a member of a stellar literary set. These two locales are reflected in Powell's 15 novels: her Ohio novels are realistic, often melancholy works set in small towns, such as Dance Night (1930) and the autobiographical My Home Is Far Away (1944); her Manhattan novels are witty and satirical works, incisive, mordant, and glittering with urban life, such as Turn, Magic Wheel (1936) and The Locusts Have No King (1948). Powell was well known in the 1940s and 50s, but aside from a devoted cult following she fell into literary obscurity in the decades that followed. A revival of interest began in the late 1980s, largely due to enthusiastic promotion of her work by Gore Vidal.

Dawn Powell VERYONE IN Angels on Toast is on the make: Lou Donovan, the entrepeneur who ricochets frantically between his well-connected current wife, his disreputable ex, and his dangerously greedy mistress; Trina Kameray, the exotic adventuress whose job title is as phony as her accent; T.V. Truesdale, the man with the aristocratic manner, the fourteen-dollar suit, and the hyperactive eye for the main chance. A dizzyingly fast-paced and deliriously entertaining novel. "For decades Dawn Powell was always just on the verge of ceasing to be a cult and becoming a major religion." - Gore Vidal

INTRODUCTION BY TIM PAGE
Dawn Powell IRST PUBLISHED IN is the story of a woman who loves two men but who will find happiness with neither. The novel is set shortly before the turn of the century in rural Ohio. Even as a young girl Sophie Truelove was carrying on a struggle within herself between "the good" and "the bad," between the conventions of her time and place and her own restless and passionate nature. This romantic impulse seemed to be in her blood, shared with her aunt Lotta who had followed her heart, but at a cost. Sophie is determined to do otherwise and makes the conscious choice to embrace "the good" when she marries the kind and steady Lynn Hamilton. He builds her a bride’s house, but when the burning, if slippery, Jerome Gardner arrives in town and invades her life, Sophie’s best intentions are undone. Sophie is a complex and self-aware woman, and a strikingly contemporary figure to be found in a novel written nearly sixty years ago. In his introduction to

Pakistan and India N-states: Powell
By Anwar Iqbal

WASHINGTON, May 20: US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said that there is no doubt about both India and Pakistan being nuclear states and hoped that they would continue the peace process began in January.
"They both are nuclear (powers) and there is no question about that. They both have nuclear capability," Mr Powell told reporters outside his office here after meeting Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri on Wednesday.
Later in the evening, Mr Kasuri told a group of Pakistani journalists that that should end speculations in the media that the United States was pressing Pakistan to abandon its nuclear programme.
"We have now moved to the next stage and are now seeking a new five-plus-three arrangement," the foreign minister said while explaining Islamabad's plan for seeking legitimacy for its nuclear programme.
The 187-nation Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty recognizes only five nations - the United States, Russia, France, Britain and China - as nuclear powers. Mr Kasuri said Pakistan respected this nuclear regime but was seeking an arrangement that would also bring international recognition for other three known nuclear-weapon states - India, Pakistan and Israel.
"We do not want more nuclear powers. It is not in our interest to have more nuclear powers," said Mr Kasuri while assuring the international community that Pakistan had completely uprooted the network responsible for smuggling nuclear technology to other nations.

Allies to leave Iraq if asked: Powell
WASHINGTON, May 14: The United States, Britain, Italy and Japan would pull their troops out of Iraq if the new interim authority that takes control after June 30 says they should, foreign ministers of the four countries said on Friday.
"Were this interim government to say to us, we really think we can handle this on our own and it will be better if you were to leave, we will leave," US Secretary of State Colin Powell told a news conference after chairing a foreign ministers' meeting of the Group of Eight highly industrialized countries.
In Baghdad, the US overseer for Iraq, Paul Bremer, also aired the possibility of an American pullout from the country, saying the United States did not stay where it was "not welcome".
"If the provisional government asks us to leave, we will leave," he said, referring to the administration due to take power after a June 30 deadline for the handover of sovereignty.
"I don't think that will happen but obviously we don't stay in countries where we're not welcome," he said at a working lunch in Baghdad with Iraqi officials from Diyala province.
