Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin)
Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, best known as Molière, (Paris, France, 1622 - 1673), French theatre writer, director and actor, one of the masters of satire. The son of a Parisian artisan, Poquelin lost his mother when still a child and entered the prestigious Jesuits' Collège de Clermont, to complete his studies. It is said that his father was very hard to him, or that in this college he met the prince of Conti, or that he was a pupil of the philosopher Gassendi, but these statements appear to be not really more than unverified hypothesis. In reality, Poquelin was a close friend of the abbé La Mothe Le Vayer, the son of the famous philosopher, in the years in which the abbé was reordering his father's works, and this allows to presume that Poquelin could be somehow influenced by them.
Among his first works, he wrote a translation of De Rerum Natura by Lucretius , now lost. At the age of 18, his father left him the title of Tapissier du Roi , and the annexed charge of valet de chambre by which he could be in frequent contact with the king. Poquelin is supposed having graduated in law at Orléans in 1642 (but some doubts however remain). In June 1643, together with his lover Madeleine Béjart and a brother and a sister of her, he founded the

This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama Purchase " T IS a mighty stroke at any vice to make it the laughing stock of everybody; for men will easily suffer reproof; but they can by no means endure mockery. They will consent to be wicked but not ridiculous." [ These are the words of the man who is rated by most critics as the greatest comic dramatist of all times and considered worthy to stand with Sophocles and Shakespeare . They were written in defense of the play, Tartuffe , ranked as his most outstanding and most representative play. For in the 17th century, as in ours, powerful cliques attempted to censor every play that did not happen to coincide with their own views or selfish interests. We can realize the bitterness of the campaign against Tartuffe from the fact that it was not finally licensed for public performance until more than three years after its first performance before Louis XIV. "Molière" was in reality only the stage name assumed when, as a young man, the embryo genius joined a group of strolling players. So famous did he make it, that few of us today recognize the surname "Poquelin." Molière's father was a prosperous tradesman, upholsterer to the King by appointment. Since this was a hereditary honor, the son shrewdly made use of it to establish and strengthen himself in the King's favor, when, after twelve years in the provinces, he returned to Paris.

Moliere (Jean Baptiste Poquelin) France 1622 - 1672 Moliere was Poquelin's stage name, and the only name ever used for this writer. Thus, Moliere is a pseudonym or pen name , which means a name other than his true name under which an author publishes his literary works Moliere's father, Jean Poquelin, was a successful craftsman. He was one of eight upholsterers who worked for the French king and royal family. Although Moliere had studied law and probably took a law degree in about 1641 at the age of 19, his father was a respectable and prosperous man who expected his son to take over his business and serve the king as he had. Poquelin and his wife, Marie Cresse, were to be disappointed. Moliere shocked his family by renouncing the business world and becoming an actor. According to legend, his mother's father had often taken him to theatrical performances, and this, perhaps, was when he learned to love the theater. However, actors in the 17th century were held in low esteem, classed with rascals and charlatans (tricksters/imposters), and were even denied Christian burial. For these reasons, Moliere's family regretted his decision. (Very probably the reason he acquired his pseudonym was to mask the relationship between himself and his family, thus sparing them the embarrassment of having an actor in their family.)
