Pietro da Cortona and Alexander VII
Pope Alexander VII ruled for twelve years, between 1655 and 1667, and in that time he changed the face of Rome more profoundly than any of his immediate predecessors. Among other advisors, Bernini and Cortona were in a class by themselves in Alexander's esteem. Together, they realized Alexander VII's vision of his Rome: a multiple stage set that could transform spaces and monuments into theatres, or teatro, of stylized action.
Bernini became the chief architect of nearly all major building tasks during Alexander's pontificate. The language Bernini developed in his architecture during the late fifties and the sixties would seem to have pleased Alexander. Buildings and squares were laid out on a large scale - even small structures must convey an impression of monumentality, as do the S. Andrea al Quirinale. Alexander saw him almost daily to chat, to be entertained and to be advised on whatever came along regarding questions in art .
One of Alexander's visions of his new Rome involved maintaining, restoring and incorporating ancient monuments into the urban fabric, especially those monuments that stood out and enhanced his picture of re-mapping of the city and the image he meant to present. The Pantheon was one such example.
The Pantheon was highly visible: located at a key point of the inner town and, preceded by the square. Alexander, from the start, attempted to isolate the Pantheon from the buildings attached to it and from the scourge of vendors who plied their trades in the portico. He began to realize some of these aims, but not without considerable effort against the active opposition of vendors and canons alike.

ALEXANDER VII
1655 - 1667 AD In the conclave of 1655 appeared a group of cardinals who pledged themselves to remain independent of personal ties and political connections. This group, called by the Spanish ambassador "the flying squadron," did much to preserve the independence of the Church for many a conclave. On April 7 after a long conclave, Fabio Chigi was elected. Fabio took the name Alexander VII. Fabio Chigi was born in Siena on February 13, 1599. Like Urban VIII he wrote verse, but adopted the law as a profession. He rose to be vice-legate of Ferrara, bishop of Nardo and apostolic visitor to Malta. He made a great reputation as a diplomat when Urban VIII sent him to Cologne as nuncio in 1639. Innocent X made him envoy to the peace congress at Munster in 1648, and though Fabio could accomplish little of what the Pope wanted, he so pleased Innocent that he made Fabio secretary of state and cardinal. Alexander VII was a sincere man, gifted with ability and endowed with piety. He tried to avoid nepotism, but he later relaxed his great strictness toward his relatives. He proved his charity when the plague hit Rome in 1656. Alexander, who had been staying at healthy Castel Gandolfo, hastened back to Rome to take personal charge of his people. He not only adopted sensible sanitary measures but calmed the people by frequent public appearances. Alexander helped Venice and the Empire in the fight against the Turks. He succeeded in prevailing upon Venice to allow the return of the Jesuits, banished for their loyalty to Paul V. His relations with young Louis XIV were not so happy. When some Corsican papal soldiers, not unprovoked, attacked the French embassy in Rome, Louis took advantage of the occasion to humiliate the Pope. Alexander was most conciliatory, but when he resisted demands which he could not in justice grant, Louis annexed Avignon and prepared to march on Rome. Poor Alexander had to give in; with the Grand Duke of Tuscany mediating, peace was signed at Pisa.

Pope Alexander VIII
Pietro Ottoboni, born at Venice, April, 1610; elected 5 October, 1689; died at Rome, 1 February, 1691. He was the son of Marco Ottoboni, chancellor of the Republic of Venice, and a descendant of a noble family of that city. The future pope enjoyed ail that wealth and social position could contribute towards a perfect education. His early studies were made with marked brilliancy at the University of Padua (q. v.), where, in 1627, he secured the doctorate in canon and civil law. He went to Rome, during the pontificate of Urban VIII (1623-44), and was made governor of Terni, Rieti, and Spoleto. For fourteen years he served as auditor of the Rota (q.v.). At the request of the Republic this favoured son was made Cardinal by Innocent X (19 February, 1652), and was later given the Bishopric of Brescia, in Venetian territory? where he quietly spent the best years of middle life. Clement IX made him Cardinal-Datary. He was already an octogenarian when elected to the papacy, and lived but sixteen months, during which time little of importance was done. Louis XIV of France whose political situation was now critical, profited by the peaceful dispositions of the new Pope, restored to him Avignon J. B. PETERSON

BlntloGitApny.Various collected editions of Popes Works appeared during his lifetime, and in 1751 an edition in nine volumes was published by a syndicate of booksellers with the commeOtaries of Mr Warburton. Warburton interpreted his elitorial rights very liberally. By his notes he wilfully misrepresented the meaning of the allusions in the satires, and made them more agreeable to his friends and to the court, while he made opportunities for the gratification of his own spite against various individuals. Joseph Wartons edition in 1797 added to the mass of~ commentary without giving much new elucidation to the allusions of the text, which even Swilt, with his exceptional facilities, had found obscure. Ode on Solitude
Happy the man, whose wish and care A few paternal acres bound, Content to breathe his native air, In his own ground.
Whose herds with milk, whose fields with bread, Whose flocks supply him with attire, Whose trees in summer yield him shade, In winter fire.
Blest, who can unconcern'dly find Hours, days, and years slide soft away, In health of body, peace of mind, Quiet by day,
Sound sleep by night ; study and ease, Together mixt; sweet recreation; And innocence, which most does please With meditation.
Thus let me live, unseen, unknown, Thus unlamented let me die, Steal from the world, and not a stone Tell where I lie.
