Lon Chaney Jr. gives the performance of a lifetime as the sweet yet feeble-minded Lennie, who is befriended by the weary Burgess Meredith. They both would be lost without each other in a rather mixed-up world. Sensitively directed by Lewis Milestone ( All Quiet on the Western Front ), the film features the first pre-credit sequence in American film history. There's also a nice score by Aaron Copland. Bill Desowitz Average review score: An American classic Of Mice and Men unfortunately gets lost among other great films of 1939 such as Gone With the Wind, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights and The Wizard of Oz. However this poignant portrayal of the Depression era West stands tall in its moral values and simplicity. George and Lennie are itinerant farm workers hoboing there way through the west. The sharp minded leader George played superbly by Burgess Meredith has been looking after the dim witted beast of burden Lennie for years. He has crafted a scenario where they will accumulate enough money to buy a place of their own. He promises Lennie, who has a patholgic affinity for stroking soft things, that he will be able to tend the soft furry rabbits. Lennie makes George repeat their plans time and time again never tiring of the story.

History we have complete: the rest is extant only in fragments. Beginning with a sketch of early Roman history, it covered in detail a period from the war with Hannibal, 219 BCE to the destruction of Carthage and of Corinth in 146 BCE.
The Roman Constitution
(Polybius, carrying forward the work begun by Aristotle of examining existing constitutions, arrives at the conclusion that the Roman has more to commend it than any other yet tried. The principle that wins his approval especially is the interdependence of its several parts, the check system which controls while it allows the exercise of power. His sketch is to be referred to the time of the war with Hannibal just before 200 BCE.)
11. The three kinds of government that I spoke of above all shared in the control of the Roman state. And such fairness and propriety in all respects was shown in the use of these three elements for drawing up the constitution and in its subsequent administration that it was impossible even for a native to pronounce with certainty whether the whole system was aristocratic, democratic, or monarchical. This was indeed only natural. For if one fixed one's eyes on the power of the consuls, the constitution seemed completely monarchical and royal; if on that of the senate, it seemed again to be aristocratic; and when one looked at the power of the masses, it seemed clearly to be a democracy. The parts of the state falling under the control of each element were and with a few modifications still are as follows.

Yogi Berra, Polybius, and the Recurring Jihad By Gray Rinehart April 12, 2002 “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Yogi Berra’s obvious observation was never more true than when considering this war-that-is-not-war, this Terror War. Yes, the Afghan force fought well in the first battleswith strong US air supportand the Taliban ran away on their clay feet, but one campaign does not a war make. It came as no surprise when US troops began fighting in earnest, while the Northern Alliance proved as solid as fog, Afghan warlords asserted themselves, and the Taliban regrouped. We have more campaigns to pursue. As our military stands in the gap, the home front may be faltering. Case in point: we still hear words like “disaster” and “tragedy” referring to 11 September, rather than “attack.” Minced words! Airplane accidents are disasters; but airplanes killing people on purpose, whether with bombs or their own aluminum and fuel, are attacks. Attacks are perpetrated by attackers, and despite politically correct deconstruction, attackers are enemies. Call them terrorists or “freedom fighters” or what you will, they are enemies. Is it war, even if undeclared? To our enemies and their missing leader it is “jihad,” a “struggle” to expand Islam but not precisely a holy war. In past jihads, extorting tribute was enough for the pious Muslim strugglers. Many Christian and Jewish cities lived in peace if they paid the tax, and perished only if they refused.

Polybius Historical Thread As a contempory historian Polybius ( c. 200-118 ) is a unique source on Roman history. The historian was a leader of the Achaic League but was deported to Rome because of suspected disloyalty. There he became a intimate of Scipio Aemilianus. His Histories covering the years 220-146 are fairly objective and well researched -although he has the Thycudean tendency to leave certain things out.

Ancient History Sourcebook:
Polybius (c.200-after 118 BCE)
Rome at the End of the Punic Wars
History , Book 6]
[Thatcher Introduction]: ROME, with the end of the third Punic war, 146 B. C., had completely conquered the last of the civilized world. The best authority for this period of her history is Polybius. He was born in Arcadia, in 204 B. C., and died in 122 B. C. Polybius was an officer of the Achaean League, which sought by federating the Peloponnesus to make it strong enough to keep its independence against the Romans, but Rome was already too strong to be resisted, and arresting a thousand of the most influential members, sent them to Italy to await trial for conspiracy. Polybius had the good fortune, during seventeen years exile, to be allowed to live with the Scipios. He was present at the destructions of Carthage and Corinth, in 146 B. C., and did more than anyone else to get the Greeks to accept the inevitable Roman rule. Polybius is the most reliable, but not the most brilliant, of ancient historians. An Analysis of the Roman Government In all these things that have now been mentioned, the people has no share. To those, therefore, who come to reside in Rome during the absence of the consuls, the government appears to be purely aristocratic. Many of the Greeks, especially, and of the foreign princes, are easily led into this persuasion: when they perceive that almost all the affairs, which they are forced to negotiate with the Romans, are determined by the senate.

Polybius, Histories
THE EARLY CONSTIUTION OF ROME ... As for the Roman constitution, it had three elements, each of them possessing sovereign powers: and their respective share of power in the whole state had been regulated with such a scrupulous regard to equality and equilibrium, that no one could say for certain, not even a native, whether the constitution as a whole were an aristocracy or democracy or despotism. And no wonder: for if we confine our observation to the power of the Consuls we should be inclined to regard it as despotic; if on that of the Senate, as aristocratic; and if finally one looks at the power possessed by the people it would seem a clear case of democracy. What the exact powers of these several parts were, and still, with slight modifications, are, I will not state. The Senate has first of all the control of the treasury, and regulates the receipts and disbursements alike. For the Quaestors cannot issue any public money for the various departments of the state without a decree of the Senate, except for the service of the Consuls. The Senate controls also what is by far the largest and most important expenditure, that, namely, which is made by the censors every lustrum Again, it is the people who bestow office on the deserving, which are the most honourable rewards of virtue. It has also the absolute power of passing or repealing laws; and most important of all, it is the people who deliberate on the question of peace or war. And when provisional terms are made for alliance, suspension of hostilities, or treaties, it is the people who ratify them or the reverse.
