Polybius For the last few years a story has spread of an old videogame with some peculiar properties. Nobody seems to know where this game came from or how many were made, but it's rumored that kids who played it often experienced amnesia, forgetting their own names or where they lived. Sometimes, they would wake up in the night screaming, having experienced horrible nightmares. Most terrifyingly of all, it's said that some who played the game have never wanted to play video games ever again, sometimes becoming staunch anti-gaming crusaders. Though its origins are shrouded in mystery, it's speculated that the game was developed by the CIA as a testing platform for new behavior modification techniques. Up until now I'd never heard of video games doing anything more sinister than causing seizures or trying to kill Emilio Estevez , so I was more than a little disappointed to discover that Polybius never existed. The world of video gaming is surprisingly short of pure bullshit urban legends. Rumors that you could resurrect Aeris or that Daikatana wouldn't suck were about as close as we got. The story about hundreds of thousands of Atari E.T. cartridges buried in a shallow mass grave somewhere in New Mexico would have been perfect, except for the fact that it's 100% true. It was once rumored that Eric Harris made Doom II levels simulating his high school to train himself before ventilating his class at Columbine, and while he did make some Doom II WADs, they were only remarkable for their complete mediocrity (with the possible exception of

Polybius
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Polybius ca 203 BC - 120 BC ) was a Greek historian of the Mediterranean world, especially the rise of the Roman Republic , which he attributed to Roman fitness and the excellence of Roman civic and military institutions. He is most valued for his account of the Second and Third Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage. Polybius's account endeavoured to provide a universal history (his Pragmateia ) of the period between 220 BC and 146 BC , along with a prologue on Roman history from 264 BC , but unfortunately out of the forty books into which his history is divided, only the first five (covering the period up to 216 BC ) survive in total, although there are numerous lengthy fragments and epitomes from the rest of the books. The first two introductory books give a precis of events in the Mediterranean from the Gauls' sack of Rome to the First Punic War, recording the rise of the Roman hegemony. Although not impartial, he was not a Roman and his writings were intended for his fellow Greeks.

Polybius 6.11-18:
The Constitution of the Roman Republic
John Porter, translator
Notice: [Polybius here sets forth a general analysis of the Roman constitution at the time of the Second Punic War.] I have already mentioned the three divisions of government in control of state affairs. All three were so equally and fittingly set out and organized in all respects as regards their respective roles that no one, not even any of the Romans themselves, could say for certain whether their system of government was aristocratic in its general nature, or democratic, or monarchical. And this uncertainty was only reasonable, for if we were to focus on the powers of the consuls it would appear to be altogether monarchical and kingly in nature. If, however, we were to focus on the powers of the Senate, it would appear to be a government under the control of an aristocracy. And yet if one were to look at the powers enjoyed by the people, it would seem plain that it was democratic in nature. As for the parts of government controlled by each element, they were at that time and (with a few exceptions) still are as follows: lustrum I have now indicated how the various functions of the state are divided among the different parts of the government. Now I will indicate how each can counteract the others, should it so wish, or work in harmony with them. Whenever the consul should set out on a military expedition invested with the aforementioned powers and with

Videogame Urban Legend - Polybius
by Michael Thomasson
We have all heard a tale or two that was simply too impossible to believe - and then we frighteningly learn the truth...
An urban legend is a tale of contemporary folklore that purports to be true and is often designed to elicit an emotional response. It is an assertion or set of assertions widely repeated from individual to individual, though its truth is unconfirmed. In most civilizations of the world, folklore has always existed in conjunction with, or in place of, recorded history. Where history is passionate with accurately writing down the details of events, traditional folklore is characterized by the "oral tradition," the dispatching of stories by word of mouth.

Polybius was an ancient Greek writer who first proposed a method of substituting different two-digit numbers for each letter. The alphabet is written inside a 5 x 5 square matrix which has numbered rows and columns. Because x and z are not used very often they share a cell. You should be able to figure out which letter is intended by looking at the rest of the message. To encode a message using the Polybius Cipher, always put the column number first and then the row number. For example: D = 41 and Q = 24 To decode a message, find each letter represented by the two-digit number by reading across the top of the table and then down the side. For example: 54 = T and 21 = B

POLYBIUS
POLYBIUS Of the forty books which made up the history of Polybius, the first five alone have come down to us in a complete form; of the rest we have only more or less copious fragments. But the general plan and scope of the work are explained by Polybius himself. His intention was to make plain how and why it was that all the known regions of the civilized world had fallen under the sway of Rome (iii. I). This empire of Rome, unprecedented in its extent and still more so in the rapidity with which it had been acquired, was the standing wonder of the age, and who, he exclaims (i. I), is so poor-spirited or indolent as not to wish to know by what means, and thanks to what sort of constitution, the Romans subdued the world in something less than fifty-three years? Whatever fault may be found with Polybius, there can be no question that he had formed a high con.ception of the task before him. He lays repeated stress on two qualities as distinguishing his history from the ordinary run of historical compositions. The first of these, its synoptic character, was partly necessitated by the nature of the period. The various states fringing the basin of the Mediterranean had become so ine, ctricably interwoven that it was no longer possible to deal with them in isolation. Polybiui therefore claims for his history that it will take a comprehensiv1 view of the whole course of events in the civilized world, within the limits of the period (i. 4). He thus aims at placing before his readers at each stage a complete survey of the field of action from Spain to Syria and Egypt. This synoptic method proceeds from a true appreciation of what is now called the unity of history, and to Polybius must be given the credit of having first firmly grasped and clearly enforced a lesson which the events of his own time were especially well calculated to teach. It is the great merit 01 his work that it gives such a picture of the 2nd aIld 3rd centuries B.C. as no series of special narratives could have supplied.

Although not impartial, he was not a Roman and his writings were intended for his fellow Greeks. Livy used him as a reference. Polybius often had excellent sources. He even befriended the younger Scipio Africanus , the famous adopted grandson of the famous general who defeated the Carthaginans in the Second Punic War by routing them from Spain and then defeating Hannibal himself in Africa at the Battle of Zama . The younger Scipio eventually invaded Carthage and forced them to surrender unconditionally. In a classic story of human behavior, Polybius captures it all: Nationalism, Racism, duplicitous politics, horrible battles, brutality, etc.; along with, loyalty, valor, bravery, intelligence, reason and resourcefulness. With his eye for detail and characteristic critically reasoned style, Polybius provided a unified view of history rather than a chronology.
