John William Polidori’s “The Vampyre”
John William Polidori’s “The Vampyre” represents yet another sexual fear in Victorian culture: the fear of the ruin of a young girl. At a time when marriage held great promise for the future for young people, and sexual repression was key, many people feared that their daughters or sister would be ruined by a man who would seduce them and then leave them. After an event like this, it was impossible for a girl to attain a marriage, and generally the only option for a girl like this was prostitution. The vampire Lord Strongmore is the representation of this fear. Her enters into London society and many of the girls desire his attention. After he leaves, the ones that he sought after revealed their sexuality to society, making them outcasts. In Italy, Aubrey discovers that Strongmore plans to ruin her supposed lover, and warns her family before leaving in disgust and fear. It is upon his return to London, however, that his fears about Strongmore are confirmed beyond a shadow of doubt. After a long illness that sets in when he sees Strongmore again, he learns that his sister is engaged to be married to Strongmore.

John William Polidori (1795-1821)
Biographical note
Author of Vampyre , possibly the first work of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction. Polidori went in 1810 to Edinburgh University, where he received his degree as a doctor of medicine on August 1, 1815 at the age of 19. In 1816 he entered Lord Byron's service as his personal physician. In 1816, Doctor Polidori accompanied Byron on a trip through Europe. In Geneva, Switzerland, the pair met with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley , and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their companion Clair Clairmont. One night in June, after the company had read aloud from a collection of horror tales, Byron suggested that they each write a ghost story. Mary Shelley worked on a tale that would later evolve into Frankenstein . Byron wrote (and quickly abandoned) a fragment of a story, which Polidori used later as inspiration for his own tale. Rather than use the crude, bestial vampire of folklore as a basis for his story, Polidori based his character on Byron. Polidori named the character "Lord Ruthven" as a joke. The name was originally used in Lady Caroline Lamb's novel Glenarvon, in which a thinly-disguised Byron figure was also named Lord Ruthven. Polidori's Lord Ruthven was not only the first vampire in English fiction, but was the first fictional vampire in the form we recognize today - an aristocratic fiend who preyed among high society. Polidori's story

During a wet summer in 1816 at the Villa Diodati near Lake Geneva, four friends were engaged in a literary tournament to write a ghost story that would scare the wits out of them. Reading a German book of ghost stories became tedious, so why not write their own, suggested one? Only two would finish. One would be remembered for eternity, and the other would have notoriety as an attack of vengeance against a friend. Tale of the Tape The four friends each had an inkling of who would win the title of 'Scariest Ghost Story Author', with two stern favourites in the race and two underdogs, or 'dark horses,' hiding in the background. Though they all came to Diodati evenly-matched in dangerous rumours and things that they had to get away from in England, would it be jumping to conclusions as to who would win? THE VAMPYRE c 1819
by Dr. John William Polidori John Polidori was Lord Byron's personal physician during his travels in Europe, and had the good fortune to be present at the famous ghost-story sessions with Byron and the Shelleys at the Villa Diodati. The Vampyre was the first vampire story in English fiction, and Polidori based the antagonist on his friend, Lord Byron, renaming the character "Lord Ruthven" as a snide in-joke. The Vampyre was published in the April 1819 issue of New Monthly Magazine . Much to both his and Byron's chagrin, The Vampyre was released as a new work by Byron. It happened that in the midst of the dissipations attendant upon London winter, there appeared at the various parties of the leaders of the ton Aubrey's weakness increased; the effusion of blood produced symptoms of the near approach of death. He desired his sister's guardians might be called, and when the midnight hour had struck, he related composedly what the reader has perused he died immediately after. The guardians hastened to protect Miss Aubrey; but when they arrived, it was too late. Lord Ruthven had disappeared, and Aubrey's sister had glutted the thirst of a VAMPYRE!

Introduction
The Romantic movement in literature arose from a period of political, social, philosophical, and religious turmoil in the late eighteenth century. The movement emphasized the emotional and the personal in reaction to classical values of order and objectivity. English Romantic writers saw themselves as visionaries with the ability to look beyond the ordinary in life and contemplate man's ultimate fate in an uncertain world. William Blake, William Wordsworth, and Percy Bysshe Shelley asserted their belief in the innate goodness of man and his future promise. Other writers of the period were less optimistic. Lord Byron and Mary Shelley, for example, questioned the likelihood of redemption through a spiritual union of the human consciousness with the supernatural. They were uncertain if man's knowledge and creativity would cause his salvation or his downfall.

Her parents were in distress, their fortune ruined, and she had not been heard of since the departure of his lordship. Aubrey's mind became almost broken under so many repeated horrors; he was afraid that this lady had fallen a victim to the destroyer of Ianthe. He became morose and silent; and his only occupation consisted in urging the speed of the postilions, as if he were going to save the life of some one he held dear. He arrived at Calais; a breeze, which seemed obedient to his will, soon wafted him to the English shores; and he hastened to the mansion of his fathers, and there, for a moment, appeared to lose, in the embraces and caresses of his sister, all memory of the past. If she before, by her infantine caresses, had gained his affection, now that the woman began to appear, she was still more attaching as a companion. Aubrey's weakness increased; the effusion of blood produced symptoms of the near approach of death.
