Polidori, the son of an Italian political émigré, was one of the first pupils at Ampleforth College . He began his schooling in shortly after the monks, in exile from France , settled in the lodge of Anne Fairfax 's chaplain in the Ampleforth Valley . He went on from Ampleforth in to Edinburgh University , where he qualified as a doctor, and in entered Lord Byron 's service as his personal physician. In 1816, Doctor Polidori accompanied Byron on a trip through Europe. In Geneva Switzerland , the pair met with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley , and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley , and their companion Clair Clairmont . One night in June, after the company had read aloud from a collection of horror tales, Byron suggested that they each write a ghost story. Mary Shelley worked on a tale that would later evolve into Frankenstein . Byron wrote (and quickly abandoned) a fragment of a story, which Polidori used later as inspiration for his own tale.

Polidori was the oldest son of Gaetano Polidori, an Italian political émigré, and Anna Maria Pierce, a governess. He had three brothers and four sisters. He was one of the first pupils at Ampleforth College . He began his schooling in shortly after the monks, in exile from France , settled in the lodge of Anne Fairfax 's chaplain in the Ampleforth Valley . He went on from Ampleforth in to Edinburgh University , where he received his degree as a doctor of medicine on August 1, 1815 at the age of 19. In he entered Lord Byron 's service as his personal physician. In 1816, Doctor Polidori accompanied Byron on a trip through Europe. In Geneva Switzerland , the pair met with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley , and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley , and their companion Clair Clairmont . M édico y escritor inglés nacido en Londres. Hijo de un patriota italiano, en 1815 se graduó en Medicina por la Universidad de Edimburgo. A partir de 1816 fue médico y secretario personal del poeta Lord Byron. Ese año le acompaño en un viaje por toda Europa. En una noche de 1816, recluidos por una tormenta en Villa Diodati, al lado del lago Leman, en Ginebra, Lord Byron, Polidori, Percy Shelley y su flamante esposa Mary, pasaron la noche leyendo historias de fantasmas y propusieron escribir sus propias historias. Mary Shelley y Polidori llevaron a cabo el desafío. Aquella escribió Frankenstein, este escribió El vampiro (1819), un cuento cuya importancia radica en la creación de la imagen prototípica del vampiro. Su personaje principal Lord Ruthven, aristocrático, sofisticado, misterioso, frío, encantador para las mujeres y bebedor de sangre, se pasea por los círculos más selectos. No hace falta ser muy sagaz para descubrir que el siniestro, flaco y pálido Lord Ruthven no es otra cosa que un retrato despiadado de Lord Byron. El que eligiera la figura de un vampiro para descargar su reprimida animadversión hacia el poeta, sugiere que era así como Polidori vivía inconscientemente esa relación: con su personalidad vampirizada por la del otro. Despedido por Byron y después de escribir un poema ambicioso, La caída de los ángeles (1821), murió en circunstancias misteriosas, probablemente por un veneno que él mismo se suministró. ©

Aubrey, impressionado pela estranha personagem, depressa concluiu que lhe era impossível conhecer o caráter de um homem inteiramente absorvido consigo mesmo, que não mostrava qualquer interesse pelo que se passava à sua volta e demonstrava até o maior cuidado em evitar o mínimo contato com os outros, revelando assim o seu modo de ser. Todavia, esta mesma impossibilidade permitiu a Aubrey dar livre curso à sua imaginação criando um retrato que ia de encontro ao seu pendor, isto é, não tardou a revestir a singular criatura de todas as qualidades de um herói de romance, sobrelevando-se nele a pessoa criada pela sua imaginação e não o ser que tinha perante os seus olhos. Desfez-se portanto em amabilidades com o lorde e os progressos desta amizade foram tais que depressa todos o notaram.
Não foi preciso muito tempo para Aubrey notar que os negócios do lorde Ruthwen estavam periclitantes, e, certo dia, vendo no hotel em que o seu amigo residia preparativos de viagem, percebeu que este ia partir.
Aubrey saiu de Roma e tomou o rumo da Grécia. Depois de atravessar o golfo, desembarcou finalmente em Atenas. Aqui, escolheu para morada a casa de um grego e logo que se alojou entregou-se de corpo e alma à investigação dos monumentos, buscando neles os vestígios de uma glória passada. Mas estes, como que envergonhados de expor os grandes atos dos homens livres aos olhos de um povo escravo, pareciam ter-se refugiado nas entranhas da terra ou estarem ocultos aos olhos sob uma espuma densa.

Maldito como pocos, John Polidori ha pasado a la historia de la literatura -si es que en verdad ha pasado- como el médico de Lord Byron. Por lo demás, merced a la conmiseración que, en el mejor de los casos, el mismo Byron y Mary Shelley dispensaron a sus escritos, se le considera un simple diletante. Se olvida así que el desdichado Polidori, junto con Mary, fue el ganador de aquel duelo de ingenio propuesto por Byron la noche del 16 de junio de 1816 en Villa Diodati. Fue entonces cuando "el pobre Polidori", tal describe Mary al doctor en base a sus inquietudes literarias, alumbró "El vampiro", relato muy superior al "Drácula" de Stoker, que sentaría las bases de cuantos chupasangres le han sucedido en las más bellas páginas de la literatura fantástica.
Nacido en 1795 en Londres, John William Polidori era hijo de un emigrante toscano -Gaetano Polidori- que en tiempos fuera secretario del poeta Vittorio Alfieri. Recuerda Roberto Cueto en su introducción a "Ernestus Berchtold o el moderno Edipo" (Celeste Ediciones, 1999) que las inquietudes del pequeño John oscilaron desde sus primeros días entre el humanismo y la ciencia. Alternancia esta que ya registramos en su abuelo, también médico, que escribiría un tratado de osteología en verso. Galeno precoz, se licenció con tan sólo 19 años, doctorándose doce meses después con una tesis sobre el sonambulismo, tema que no deja de ser revelador respecto a sus inquietudes literarias.

The Vampire di John William Polidori, primizia della letteratura macabra inglese, si presenta come l’archetipo di ogni futuro vampiro, come un perfetto repertorio degli elementi tipici del racconto d’orrore. Il suo vampiro, però, non vive solitario in un castello tenebroso, anzi frequenta, come un gentiluomo alla moda, i salotti londinesi: gioca d’azzardo e seduce belle dame…
Tuttavia l’originalità maggiore di questa creatura letteraria sta nella movimentata storia della sua pubblicazione, fatta di smentite e di attribuzioni contestate. Lord Ruthven, il vampiro-dandy di Polidori, non poté infatti contare su una vita editoriale tranquilla (ma come pretenderlo dal Trasgressore per eccellenza?): apparso nel 1819 sul “New Monthly Magazine” sotto il nome di George Byron, per un malinteso del direttore della rivista, questo racconto, di rapido successo in Inghilterra e nel continente, suscitò subito polemiche e schermaglie su chi fosse veramente l’autore.
