, short-story writer, poet, and critic. The son of itinerant actors, Poe was orphaned at two and was adopted by John Allan, a Richmond, Virginia, merchant and his wife. They gave Poe his middle name and a genteel childhood but eventually became the source of profound unhappiness. Allan was unfaithful to his wife, and when Poe took her part, Allan turned on him savagely. Although Allan violently opposed Poe's literary career, he unwittingly encouraged it. His firm imported many foreign books and magazines, which Poe read assiduously, giving him a literary sophistication far beyond his Richmond peers. Allan sent Poe to the University of Virginia with no spending money; when the boy ran up heavy gambling debts, his foster father refused to pay. After a bitter quarrel, Poe left home to seek literary fame. Poe moved to Boston in 1827 where he published a book of poems but almost starved. He enlisted in the army and soon became sergeant major of his regiment. A reconciliation with Allan, motivated largely by Poe's hope of an inheritance, led to an appointment to West Point. There he began brilliantly, but another falling out with Allan plunged him into depression. He stopped attending classes and drills and was dismissed in 1831. His cadet friends helped finance a book of poems containing some of his best lyrics, "Israfel" and "The Doomed City," but the book was hardly noticed.

The garden of the Poe Museum in Richmond creates just such a spot where visitors (and perhaps the poet's spirit) can linger. The Poe Shrine is an open brick shelter, constructed of materials salvaged from the Southern Literary Messenger building where Poe worked as an editor. A bust of the poet looks out on an island of green grass, a two-tiered fountain, and a stone planter overflowing with begonias. It is a typical autumn day in Central Virginia, warm

Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe's mystery and science fiction are underacknowledged by realist literary critics. Poe was a pioneer in both genres, and together they constitute, in bulk, half of his short tales. However, the favorite Poe works among realists include "Ligeia", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and "William Wilson". These are the Poe works that are closest to conventional realistic fiction: there is an emphasis in these works on psychological portraiture, and the study of human relationships. This is quite common, to emphasize those works in an author's canon that correspond to the conventions of conventional literary thought, and ignore the rest. There is no mystery in these works, and the fantasy, where it exists, is strictly supernatural, with no scientific overtones.
The Mysteries
By contrast, the sheer amount of mystery and science fiction Poe wrote is usually not acknowledged. Poe's mysteries include not only "The Gold-Bug" and the three Dupin tales, but also, "Thou Art The Man" and "The Oblong Box". In addition, both "The Spectacles", and "The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether" share much of the form of mystery tales, with surprise solutions hinted at through clues in the stories, and many scenes and incidents having two meanings, one surface, one hidden and revealed at the end, even though neither has a detective or an explicit puzzle to solve. "Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether" could be a formal model for

Poe and Baltimore
"He pointed to my garments;-they were muddy and clotted with gore. I spoke not, and he took me gently by the hand:-it was indented with the impress of human nails." Berenice, 1835. Edgar Allan Poe has been dead since October 7, 1849 and yet his ghost continues to haunt us. Poe was one of Baltimore's greatest writers. He was a poet, short story writer, literary critic, editor, publisher and lecturer. His life was filled with tragedy, poverty, and illness. Writers in his time could hardly make a living from writing and had to turn to other employment that could afford them some leisure time to write. If they were lucky enough to have a patron or an inheritance, their prolificacy was assured. Poe was not that fortunate.

Peterson In 1826, Edgar Allan Poe attended the University of Virginia to receive the liberal education promised to him by his foster father, John Allan. Almost 200 years later, I visited Charlottesville in search of background ambiance for a novel I was writing about Poe's stint as a college student. Although Poe had only turned 17 just three weeks before his arrival, John Allan's influence with the school's administrators cleared the way for his charge's early admission. Lacking that sort of pull, I was forced to stand outside Poe's room on the West Range and settle for looking through the glass door. Even so, the August afternoon I spent among the stately brick buildings at the heart of the campus was more than enough to give me a sense of how Thomas Jefferson's "Academical Village" impacted Poe's writing and personality during his ten-month stay in Charlottesville.

Meandering, I could turn left onto Gold Bug Avenue, or Raven Drive, or turn right onto Poe Avenue, names commemorating a writer's stay on this little sea island. If I could travel far enough in time I would see a different Sullivan's Island, one remote, uninhabited, isolated. Such was the Sullivan's Island of the nineteenth century, the Sullivan's Island that greeted Edgar Allan Poe. There probably was a fresh wind whipping the sails of the brig Waltham when she made her way into Charleston harbor on November 18, 1827 carrying the eighteen-year-old Edgar Allan Poe, recently enlisted under the name of Private Edgar A. Perry. Poe was bound for his post in the United States Army at Ft. Moultrie on the tip of Sullivan's Island. Sullivan's Island stands guard at the mouth of Charleston harbor, protecting the city from assault by pirates, hurricanes, British and Yankees.

Misery is manifold: a short life of Edgar Allen Poe by Susan Keeping "Poe had a pretty bitter doom. Doomed to seethe down his soul in a great continuous convulsion of disintegration..." - D.H. Lawrence in Studies in American Literature Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19th, 1809. He was the second of three children of Elizabeth Arnold and David Poe, both actors. His father abandoned the family shortly after. In 1811, his mother died leaving Poe an orphan. He was fostered out to, and later adopted by, John and Frances Allen. From 1815 to 1820, the Allens lived in England. Poe attended the Manor House School run by Reverend John Bransly. In 1825, he fell in love with Sarah Elmira Royster. However, this relationship ended when she was forced to marry another man. In 1826 he enrolled in the University of Virginia where he excelled in French and Latin. Poe enlisted in the army in 1827. By the time he was discharged, later that year, he was a Regimental Sargeant Major. That year also saw the publication of his first book of poems. "Tamerlane and Other Poems" contained such poems as "The Lake" and "

118. American Masters . Edgar Allan Poe | PBS
Almost one hundred and fifty years after his death, edgar Allen poe’s prose andpoetry continue to frighten, influence and inspire writers, composers, artists
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/poe_e.html
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
from "The Raven" H Throughout the late 1830s and early 1840s, Poe wrote much of his best work, including THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM and the stories "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," and "The Gold Bug." While other writers of the time were writing straight forward realistic representations of life in America, Poe was concerning himself with the subconscious— dreams, nightmares, and the unspoken. His work plumbed the depths of human fears and desires, often allowing the "reality" of the stories to fade away and make room for a reality only found within the mind. Though he had a handful of admirers, Poe’s interest in the unspoken and psychological left him unable to successfully sell his work. for his masterful poem "The Raven." But with the slight advances in his career during the mid-1840s also came the setbacks of his continued drinking, employment problems, and most of all, the ill health of his wife, Virginia. In January of 1847 his wife died, and Poe returned to Virginia. There he continued to write, producing one of his masterpieces, "Eureka." On a trip back north to New York in 1849, Poe stopped in Baltimore where he was found on October 3rd, passed out on a street outside a bar. He died four days later. Though some have suggested foul play, no one is exactly certain of the circumstances of his death. Sadly, it was not until years later, with the help of French poets such as Baudelaire, that Poe’s rank as a great artist became solidified. A man profoundly ahead of his time, Edgar Allen Poe pointed to the mysteries of the psyche, to the dark truths that float in our dreams, to our unredeamable fears; and for this, the art of writing will remain eternally grateful.
