The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Fiction: Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849)
Index Edgar Allan Poe, a southerner, shares with Melville a darkly metaphysical vision mixed with elements of realism, parody, and burlesque. He refined the short story genre and invented detective fiction. Many of his stories prefigure the genres of science fiction, horror, and fantasy so popular today. Poe's short and tragic life was plagued with insecurity. Like so many other major 19th-century American writers, Poe was orphaned at an early age. Poe's strange marriage in 1835 to his first cousin Virginia Clemm, who was not yet 14, has been interpreted as an attempt to find the stable family life he lacked. Poe's verse, like that of many Southerners, was very musical and strictly metrical. His best-known poem, in his own lifetime and today, is "The Raven" (1845). In this eerie poem, the haunted, sleepless narrator, who has been reading and mourning the death of his "lost Lenore" at midnight, is visited by a raven (a bird that eats dead flesh, hence a symbol of death) who perches above his door and ominously repeats the poem's famous refrain, "nevermore." The poem ends in a frozen scene of death-in-life: And the Raven, never flitting, still

Introduction
Task ... Teacher Page Introduction Everyone loves a horror story. Stephen King, the master of 20th century horror has over forty novels and numerous box office hits. From his first novel and movie hit Carrie in 1974 to his latest movie hit The Green Mile , Stephen King is often compared to the 18th century weaver of horror tales, Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's troubling life shaped his stories of hauntings and death. Top The Task The local theatre consortium has decided to hold a Poe Festival. They have narrowed the number of selections to six. You are part of a team that will research Poe's life and works to help the consortium decide which of the six they will include in the Festival. You will create a program and a playbill that includes:
  • graphics to illustrate the theme of the work
a timeline of major events in Poe's life biography
a short biography of events that affected his life and works
    a cast/character list
a breakdown of your literary work's plot in acts and scenes
  • You will present your literary selection to the theatre consortium using your choice of video, Hyperstudio, Powerpoint, or live dramatization.

What if Edgar Allan Poe had moved to Oquawka?
by Rex Cherrington Edgar Allan Poe made plans during the last months of his life to become the editor of a literary magazine which might have brought him to west-central Illinois. Most biographies of the famous American poet do not mention this, though it is well documented. E.H.N. Patterson of Oquawka corresponded with Poe in an effort to launch a new literary magazine in that river town. Patterson would be the publisher and Poe, the editor. J. B. PATTERSON The Pattersons of Oquawka possessed impressive intellect, writing ability and the technical knowledge to run a publishing operation. J. B. Patterson, the senior editor of the Oquawka Spectator came to this part of Illinois via a circuitous route. At Winchester, Virginia he began to learn the printing trade. There he worked for Samuel Davis at the Winchester Virginia Republican .Later he went to Leesburg, Virginia, where he established a newspaper which failed, followed by another failed newspaper at Washington, D.C. While J. B. P.'s family remained at Winchester, he left Washington in 1832 and went to Rock Island where he stayed with a distant relative, George Davenport, the Indian trader. At Rock Island he joined the Illinois Militia and became regimental printer at Galena. Later in 1832, J.B. P. returned to Rock Island and the following year became acquainted with Black Hawk. The Rock Island interpreter Antoin LeClair wanted Black Hawk's own story told but knew his pen could not do justice to the Sac and Fox leader's eloquence. Patterson's ability was recognized and at age 27 he wrote

T he life of Edgar A. Poe was checkered by an alternating series of successes and failures, of breakdowns and recoveries, of hopes engendered and dashed despite which (or, perhaps, because of which) he produced brilliant literature that assured his enduring stature as America's finest writer of psychological horror and as one of her best poets. In addition, Poe is credited with defining the modern short story, creating the first literary detective (Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin), and writing some of the first science fiction. Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849)
Best known for his poems and short fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, born in Boston Jan 19, 1809, died Oct 7, 1849 in Baltimore, deserves more credit than any other writer for the transformation of the short story from anecdote to art. He virtually created the detective story and perfected the psychological thriller. He also produced some of the most influential literary criticism of his time, important theoretical statements on poetry and the short story, and has had a worldwide influence on literature. Early Life and Work
Poe's parents, David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins, were touring actors; both died before he was 3 years old. He was taken into the home of JohnAllan, a prosperous merchant in Richmond, Va., and baptized Edgar Allan Poe. His childhood was uneventful, although he studied for 5 years (1815-20) in England. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia but stayed for only a year. Although a good student, he ran up large gambling debts that Allan refused to pay. Allan prevented his return to the university and broke off Poe's engagement to Sarah Elmira Royster, his Richmond sweetheart. Lacking any means of support, Poe enlisted in the army. He had, however, already written and printed (at his own expense) his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), verses written in themanner of Byron.

E dgar Allan Poe lived in Philadelphia for about six years (1838-1844), spending his last year to 18 months at a house on North 7th Street. With him lived his beloved wife Virginia, his treasured mother-in-law Maria Clemm (whom he called Muddy), and their adored feline, a tortoise-shell tabby named Catterina.
Poe came to Philadelphia, which was at the time the literary center of the United States, boasting many publishers of books and magazines. Six years before his arrival, Poe had already sold a handful of tales to The Philadelphia Saturday Courier. He now hoped to land a job working on a magazine which would provide him both stability and the money needed to continue writing. Poe arrived in Philadelphia with a patchwork resume reflecting a man whose career consisted of starts buoyed by optimism and terminations clouded by peevish fits. That record would continue during his tenure in Philadelphia.
