Irish Identity Mainpage hoganstand.com Peter De Loughry - the Kilkenny patriot and politician
The man who made the key that sprung De Valera from Lincoln Jail

The De Loughrys first came into Kilkenny City from Tullaherin in 1780. Tullaherin lies between Bennettsbridge and Dungarvan, County Kilkenny. Peter de Loughry was born in 1882. He was the 5th child of the family and it was he who took over the management of the large family business which had been established in 1816 by his father Richard.
As Thomas Murphy saw it he had to take the three boys by boat and train to Paris. This he did without delay.
Winifred Murphy later married Peter De Loughry. She became Head of the Cumann na mBan in Kilkenny. The poet and freedom fighter Joseph Mary Plunkett was a great friend of Peter and Winifred De Loughry and often stayed at their home in Flood Street, later called Parnell Street.
Peter De Loughry was a staunch member of the Irish Volunteers and was arrested and imprisoned on numerous occasion. He was an ardent member of Kilkenny Corporation and County Council. He was chairman of Kilkenny City and County Technical Committee and was in jail when first he was elected to the Mayoralty.

Paul Muldoon When the Master was calling the roll
At the primary school in Collegelands,
You were meant to call back Anseo
And raise your hand
As your name occurred. Anseo, meaning here, here and now,
All present and correct,
Was the first word of Irish I spoke.
The last name on the ledger
Belonged to Joseph Mary Plunkett Ward
And was followed, as often as not, By silence, knowing looks, A nod and a wink, the Master's droll "And where's our little Ward-of-court?" I remember the first time he came back The Master had sent him out Along the hedges To weigh up for himself and cut A stick with which he would be beaten. After a while, nothing was spoken; He would arrive as a matter of course With an ash-plant, a salley-rod. Or, finally, the hazel-wand He had whittled down to a whip-lash, Its twist of red and yellow lacquers Sanded and polished, And altogether so delicately wrought That he had engraved his initials on it. I last met Joseph Mary Plunkett Ward In a pub just over the Irish border. He was living in the open

    Michael Collins was the youngest son of Michael Collins (Sr.), born on 16 October 1890, in Clonakilty, Co. Cork, Ireland, UK. On his deathbed, Michael Collins Sr. reportedly sat up quite suddenly, pointed at his youngest son, and said 'You shall be a great man'.
    Collins was raised in West Cork, at that time the very heart of the Fenian/IRB movement in Ireland. His 'hedgerow' teachers were all members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and so it was not amazing to find that by age 11, Collins was already subscribed to three Republican newspapers, including 'The United Irishman', edited by Arthur Griffith, who went on to found Sinn Fein, and serve as the top government official of the Irish Free State, upon Collins's death.
    In 1906, at the age of 16, Collins moved to London, and began work as a clerk for the Post Office Savings Bank and other financial institutions there (giving him the background necessary to later serve as the Provisional Irish Republic's Minister of Finance). The Fenian movement was widespread in any area which housed large amounts of Irish, and London was no different. In 1909, Michael Collins was sworn into the Irish Republican Brotherhood.

    • Rev. William Conyngham Plunket, 4th Baron Plunket. Statue on Kildare St , Dublin. The Papal Count Plunkett lived at Ballymascanlan in his old age from at least 1945. Did he buy the house from Plunket after 1932 (and is the name just a coincidence)? Or were they related (but he was Catholic).
      P.J. Plunkett, of Dublin, had issue:

    Shouldn’t you know more about the Catholic renewal in high gear before Vatican II? Shouldn’t your children and grandchildren?
    Sample the finest Catholic writing of the past two centuries in this massive anthology, now back in print after nearly half a century Amid the present decline of Catholic life and letters it seems astonishing to recall that in 1948, when this magnificent treasury was published, the Church was enjoying a great literary and intellectual revival that had been going on since the early 1800s. But secular publishers and critics paid little heed, creating the need for a comprehensive collection that would chart the Catholic Revival by anthologizing its leading lights. Fr. Francis Thornton’s wonderful treasury quickly became a standard in better Catholic high schools and colleges then fell out of favor after the Council. Now, Roman Catholic Books makes it available again in handsome, long-lasting hardcover.
    Fr. Thornton divides his survey into five expansive sections: “The English Revival” (including works by Newman, Frederick Faber, Robert Hugh Benson, Belloc, Chesterton, Knox, Sheed, and Waugh) ... “The French Influence” (works by Claudel, Gheon, Mauriac, Gilson, Bernanos, Maritain, et al) ... “The Irish Revival” (Padraic Colum, James Clarence Mangan, Canon Sheehan) ... “The American Revival” (Orestes Brownson, John La Farge, Joyce Kilmer, William Thomas Walsh, Fulton Sheen) ... and “The Liturgical Revival” (not to be confused with the upheaval after Vatican II, and including works by Karl Adam, Pius Parsch, Romano Guardini and Virgil Michel).

    While tracing the history of family names and dates are essential to any genealogy effort, it is the colorful family stories of the past that I continually seek.
    I am currently researching the Brady, Bragg, Plunkett and Byrne clans. There are unfounded claims, that there may be a link from our VA Plunkett's (Father Joseph Plunkett, Thomas, and the Brady's) to St. Oliver Plunkett, the last Saint of Ireland, so you will find the start of trees for St. Plunkett and his descendants including Joseph Mary Plunkett who was also martyred for the his leadership in the 1916 Easter Rising to once again gain independence for Ireland, an effort the Byrne clan was notorious for.
    If you have information or questions about any family member or person in my tree, feel free to send me a note at bill.j.byrne@ual.com
    With the cooperation of so many relatives and fellow genealogist our tree now has more than 2,000 names. The saga continues...
    Enjoy

    Mother Agnes Mary, S.V. Print Friendly Page Our convent garden's new growth and delicate blooms tell me that the world is about to be crowned in its summer glory. Such beauty makes me think of a poem written by the Irish patriot, Joseph Mary Plunkett: "I see His blood upon the rose,
    And in the stars the glory of His eyes;
    His body gleams amid eternal snows,
    His tears fall from the skies.
    I see His face in every flower;
    The thunder and the singing of the birds are but His voice
    And carven by His power; rocks are His written words.
    All pathways by His feet are worn,
    His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea;
    his crown of thorns is twined with every thorn, His cross is every tree. " You, our faith-filled readers, are men and women of worldly vision who are doubly blessed, for your participation in the extended family of the Sisters of Life suggests that you possess a finer, other-worldly vision the vision possessed by one with a heart inflamed by faith to see clearly the presence of Christ and the promptings of the Holy Spirit in the people, events and circumstances you encounter each day. For three years we have had the joy of highlighting the heroism of women and men with the John Cardinal O'Connor Award. Last year's award was presented to Senator and Mrs. Rick Santorum in recognition of the courage, nobility and love with which they live their vocation to marriage and family life, and on behalf of all families who love and welcome a most vulnerable unborn child into their hearts and lives.
