My Lady Has the Grace of Death
    —by Joseph Mary Plunkett
My lady has the grace of Death
Whose charity is quick to save,
Her heart is broad as heaven's breath
Deep as the grave. She found me fainting by the way
And fed me from her babeless breast
Then played with me as children play,
Rocked me to rest. When soon I rose and cried to heaven
Moaning for sins I could not weep,
She told me of her sorrows seven
Kissed me to sleep. And when the morn rose bright and ruddy And sweet birds sang on the branch above She took my sword from her side all bloody And died for love. See Also: Page updated 21 Feb 2004 Ireland's OWN logo by Eamann Women Freedom Fighters Background by DM Gould

    The Tragic Bride of 1916
    —by DM Gould
Grace Gifford, born in 1888, was the second youngest in a family of twelve children. Her father was Catholic, her mother Protestant; the boys were raised Catholic, the girls Protestant. The family was well off and Grace studied art at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, and later became a caricaturist. A chance meeting with an Irish journalist whilst Grace was studying in London introduced Grace and her sisters to William Butler Yeats , Constance Markievicz, and Maud Gonne. Grace met Joseph Plunkett through a function at the at St Enda's School (the establishment founded by Pádraig Pearse to give boys an Irish education) for the United Arts Club, of which both were members. Joseph Plunkett was the son of a Papal count. He suffered from tuberculosis and was already in poor health when he and Grace met in 1914. Within a year, they were secretly engaged and planned an Easter wedding, which was to follow Grace's baptism into the Catholic faith. The wedding was to take place on 24th April 1916. Grace knew nothing about the planned Easter Rising ; and Joe, as a member of the Supreme Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was sworn to secrecy.

    Joseph Mary Plunkett
Joseph Mary Plunkett November 21 May 4 , 1916) was an Irish nationalist, poet, and leader of the Easter Rising in 1916. His father, George Noble Plunkett , was a papal count and curator of the National Museum. At a young age Plunkett was stricken with tuberculosis , and spent part of his youth in the warmer climates of the Mediterranean and north Africa. He studied at the English Jesuit School at Stonyhurst in Lancashire, and acquired some military knowledge from the Officers' Training Corps there. Throughout his life, Joseph Plunkett took an active interest in Irish hertiage and the Irish language . He joined that Gaelic League , and took on as a tutor Thomas MacDonagh , with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. The two were both poets with an interest in theater, and both were early members of the Irish Volunteers , joining their provisional committee. Plunkett's interest in Irish nationalism spread throughout his family, notably to his younger brothers George and John, as well as his father, who allowed his property in Kimmage, north Dublin, to be used as a training camp for young men who wished to escape conscription in England during World War I . Men there were instead trained to fight for Ireland. Sometime probably in 1915 Joseph Plunkett joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), and soon after was sent to Germany to meet with

THE POET WHO PLANNED THE EASTER RISING
    21 November 1887:
Joseph Mary Plunkett, Irish patriot, born.
Often viewed as the tragic young poet of the 1916 Easter Rising, the sensitive-looking Joseph Mary Plunkett was in fact a key figure who with his friend Thomas MacDonagh shaped the strategy and drew up the operational plans for the insurrection. Plunkett came from a family already prominent in Irish history. He was related to the Blessed Oliver Plunkett who was executed by the English in 1681, and his living relatives included Horace Plunkett, founder of the Irish agricultural cooperatives movement, and the fantasy short-story writer Lord Dunsany. His father was George Noble, Count Plunkett, who had been made a Papal count for his efforts on behalf of the Catholic church. A noted poet and, among other things, an expert in Arabic literature, Joseph Plunkett was also a member of the secret Irish Republican Brotherhood. When in 1913 the Irish Volunteers were formed to defend the movement for Irish home rule from the obstructionism threatened by the unionists in Ulster, the IRB infiltrated the Volunteers and by early in 1915 were planning to launch an armed insurrection in a bid for a full Irish republic. As a highly educated gentleman of leisure, Joseph Plunkett could offer the movement a lot in the way of time and resources, despite an incurable case of tuberculosis of the neck glands that threatened to eventually kill him. He soon became one of the men tasked with drawing up the actual plans for the insurrection. Apart from his wide-ranging studies of military affairs, his only hands-on military experience was from his days in an English Jesuit boarding school, when he took part in the Officers Training Corp maneuvers on Salisbury Plain.

    GRACE GIFFORD PLUNKETT, IRISH PATRIOT
    4 March 1888:
Grace Gifford Plunkett, Irish patriot, born. Grace Gifford is one of the tragic stories of the 1916 Easter Rising, but the poignancy of her brief marriage to the executed rebel leader Joseph Mary Plunkett has tended to obscure her deep commitment to the cause of the Irish Republic as well as to the memory of her late husband. Grace never married again, and throughout her long widowhood she remained a staunch Irish Republican, serving on the reorganized Sinn Fein executive alongside Kathleen Clarke and Constance Markievicz, and was eventually thrown into Kilmainham herself for her support of the anti-treaty side in the Irish Civil War. She died, alone, on 13 December 1955.
The stories in This Month in Celtic History are drawn from the over 1000 anniversaries of people and events from the histories of the six Celtic nations of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Mann in the 2003 Celtic Calendar available from the Celtic League American Branch.
