Joseph Mary Plunkett
Joseph Mary Plunkett November 21 May 4 ) was an Irish nationalist, poet, and leader of the Easter Rising in 1916. His father, George Noble Plunkett , was a papal count and curator of the National Museum. At a young age Plunkett was stricken with tuberculosis , and spent part of his youth in the warmer climates of the Mediterranean and north Africa . He studied at the English Jesuit School at Stonyhurst in Lancashire , and acquired some military knowledge from the Officers' Training Corps there. Throughout his life, Joseph Plunkett took an active interest in Irish hertiage and the Irish language . He joined that Gaelic League , and took on as a tutor Thomas MacDonagh , with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. The two were both poets with an interest in theater, and both were early members of the

Joseph Mary Plunkett (1887-1916)
A keen scholar and the son of a papal count, Joseph Plunkett had the benefit of close ties with the literary world, and has left us with some inciteful poetry
He was a friend of Thomas MacDonagh with whom he worked as director of the Irish Theatre and as co-editor of the Irish Review. Plunkett's house in Kimmage, a suburb of Dublin was used as one of the clearing stations for the cargo of arms landed at Howth in 1914 for the Irish Volunteers.
It was also used as atraining camp for young men who had been invited by the Plunkett family to Ireland from Britain to avoid conscription during World War One and to fight for an Independent Ireland instead.
Joseph Plunkett suffered from ill health and had had an operation for glandular tuberculosis only days before the Rebellion, struggling out of his sick bed to partake in it.

A brief biography
Joseph Mary Plunkett (1879-1916) was born in Dublin. He was educated at Catholic University School, Belvedere College and Stonyhurst College. His study of the mystics John of the Cross, Theresa of Avila, and Francis de Sales is discernable in his poetry. He was a close friend of Thomas MacDonagh and Padraic Pearse, noted Irish poets. He was for a short while editor of the literary publication, the Irish Review. Along with MacDonagh and Edward Martyn, he co-founded the Irish Theatre. During the 1916 Rising he was one of the signers of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. He was imprisoned by the English army in the Richmond Barracks. Shortly before his execution in the courtyard of Kilmainham jail, on the morning of May 4th, he married his fiance, Grace Gifford, in the jail's chapel. He died at the age of 28. His friend, Thomas MacDonagh was executed the day before. Joseph's father and brother John, who were also involved in 1916 uprising, served ten years penal servitude. Joseph's wife, Grace, was also later imprisoned in the Kilmainham jail.

McGrath's Comments: Joseph Mary Plunkett. I've got a battered selection of his poems I picked up in a junk shop in Clonmel. It must have been printed fairly soon after he was shot - because it talks of him as being dead, but it never mentions the circumstances of his death. Wartime censorship I imagine. Anyway, here's a ballad he wrote that's included in the introduction written by his sister Geraldine. I've never seen it anywhere else:
The planets seven that swing through Heaven
On a golden tether round their Lord the Sun

    (1887 - 1916) poet and revolutionary
Born Dublin Son of George Noble Plunkett, Count Plunkett; educated at Belvedere College, Dublin, Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, and UCD. His health was poor, and after graduation he spent some years in Italy, Egypt, and Algeria. On his return to Dublin in 1911 he renewed an earlier friendship with Thomas MacDonagh and with him launched the Irish Review and helped Edward Martyn to found the Irish Theatre in Hardwicke Street in 1914. Turning to politics, he joined the IRB and the Irish Volunteers and in 1915 undertook a mission to Berlin to help Roger Casement in his efforts to secure German aid for a rising. He then went to New York to report to the Clan na Gael leaders on the progress of the preparations. On his return he was made a member of the Military Council of the IRB. He fell seriously ill early in 1916 and had to undergo throat surgery. Nevertheless he took his place in the GPO during the 1916 Rising and was one of the signatories of the Proclamation of the Republic. He was court-martialled and sentenced to death. He married Grace Gifford in his cell in Kilmainham Jail a few hours before being shot on 4 May 1916. His
