Sebastian Matthews:
Sebastian Matthews is the editor of the literary journal Rivendell . His poetry and prose have appeared in numerous journals, and his memoir, In My Father’s Footsteps , has just been published. Matthews teaches part time at Warren Wilson College.
Stanley Plumly: Stanley Plumly’s has written several books of poetry, including Out-of-the-Body Travel , which was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award, and Now That My Father Lies Down Beside Me: New and Selected Poems, 1970–2000 . He has recently published a collection of essays, , and is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. About Search Party: Collected Poems of William Matthews When William Matthews died of a heart attack in 1997, the day after his fifty-fifth birthday, America lost one of its most important poets, one whose humor and wit were balanced by deep emotion, whose off-the-cuff inventiveness belied the acuity of his verse. With Search Party , his son Sebastian and his friend and fellow poet Stanley Plumly have brought together a collection drawing from all of Matthews's previously published work as well as twenty-three never-before-published poems. Here are meditations on relationships, work, family life, and, of course, jazz: "I love the smoky libidinal murmur / of a jazz crowd... / I like to slouch back / with that I'll-be-here-awhile tilt." Pleasure is abundant in these poems: music, wine, love, and language are, for Matthews, the necessary consolations for life's suffering.

A Conversation with Stanley Plumly
Lisa Meyer S tanley Plumly was born in Barnesville, Ohio in 1939, and grew up in the lumber and farming regions of Virginia and Ohio. He is the author of five books of poetry. His first collection, In the Outer Dark , received the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Award; his third, Out-of-the-Body Travel , was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Other titles are Giraffe Summer Celestial , and Boy on the Step Having taught at over a dozen universities across America, currently Plumly is a member of the faculty at the Department of English at the University of Maryland. His sixth collection of poems, The Marriage In The Trees , will be published by Ecco Press this September. Robert Penn Warren said of Plumly: "In poem after poem, I find a great and teasingly original satisfaction. The only way that comes into my mind to say it is that Plumly has established a new sort of ratio between the poet and his subject or even his poem. It's a new turn of mind, behind the turn of language, in haunting, visionary pieces." The March 1995 interview with Lisa Meyer that follows took place in the basement pub of the Nassau Inn, in Princeton, New Jersey. Plumly has

Stanley Plumly from Narrative Values, Lyric Imperatives The relationship of the needs of narrative meeting the needs of lyricismor at least the line break and the stanzais old hat, depending on how you frame the question. For the modernist it takes on subject status beginning with the Romantics, particularly the Preface to Lyrical Ballads. In making so much of the language of men and the rhythms of prose as the idioms of reality as opposed to the absolutist and moralistic mindsets of eighteenth-century diction, Wordsworth describes a separation between two kinds of language. "I have wished to keep the Reader in the company of flesh and blood," he says, "in a selection of language really used by men." (I think he means Dorothy, too.) It's not too long before this essentially Miltonic-blank-verse versus Popeian-verse-couplets argument sublimates into the now familiar and ongoing debate between new-age formalism and free verse: you hear it in Whitman's ars poeticas, Dickinson's letters, Eliot's English commentaries, Pound's ABC's, Williams's Paterson
