Sospeso performs Boomer Waltz by the late, great George Plimpton at the Orensanz Center on January 9 , for the preview concert of the second volume of Sospeso Xponential . The following text is an excerpt from Richard Severo's obituary for the Associated Press that appeared in the New York Times on September 26, 2003. Mr. Plimpton, a lanky, urbane man possessed of boundless energy and perpetual bonhomie, became, in 1953, the first and only editor of The Paris Review. A ubiquitous presence at book parties and other gala social events, he was tireless in his commitment to the serious, contemporary fiction the magazine publishes. Easily identifiable in later years by his thatch of silver hair and always by his cheery, lockjaw delivery, Mr. Plimpton was a familiar figure ranging above other guests at the restaurants, saloons and weekend destinations where blue-blood New York overlapped with the New York of the famous and the creative. All of this contributed to the charm of reading about Mr. Plimpton's frequently hapless adventures — as "professional" athlete, stand-up comedian, movie bad guy or circus performer — which he chronicled in witty, elegant prose in nearly three dozen books.

September 26, 2003 George Plimpton to Write Book on Death (2003-09-26) George Plimpton, the American author who became famous by literally putting himself into the story, is said to be working on a book about death. The 76-year-old scribe died Thursday night in New York.
Mr. Plimpton became an NFL quarterback to write the book "Paper Lion." He also boxed with Archie Moore, pitched to Willie Mays and performed on the trapeze with a circus.
"This is my biggest challenge to date," said Mr. Plimpton through his publicist. "Lots of authors write about death, but they don't know first-hand what they're talking about. I've always found my prose was sharper when I had lived the experience first...so to speak."
Mr. Plimpton's literary agent said he already has several six-figure offers from publishers and is waiting for his client to return his phone call. by Scott Ott Donate TrackBack (2) Comments (23) More Satire ... Printer-Friendly Email this entry to: Your email address:

Posted by: mdw on September 26, 2003 01:04 PM The first Plimpton book I ever read was Paper Lion. I could not believe that anyone would be stupid enough to strap it on in the NFL for the sake of a novel. That he did not get killed during that (or any of his other) forays into sports is a miracle. The books that resulted were gems. Wonder what he'll write about up there? Posted by: on September 29, 2003 01:34 AM Damn. is known for doing those things that the rest of us only dream about. Playing quarterback for the Detroit Lions, basketball for the Boston Celtics, hockey for the Boston Bruins, percussion with the New York Philharmonic and flying on a trapeze for the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus are but a few of the professional worlds he has explored. Plimpton has used these and other similarly interesting experiences as the basis for his many books and magazine articles.
A native of New York City, Plimpton has degrees from Harvard University and King's College, Cambridge University. In 1953 he founded The Paris Review, a literary quarterly of which he is still editor. He has taught at Bernard College and has been associate editor at both Horizon Magazine and Harper's Magazine. He is a special contributor to Sports Illustrated and Esquire.

George Plimpton, Thomas Beller, Gray's Papaya
Reading Thomas Beller's Newsweek essay about George Plimpton - part sweet remembrance of the man and part riff on the challenges of having a literary magazine, a la The Paris Review , or Open City, which is Beller's concern, we noticed a typo on his bio: "...Beller is the author of 'The Sleep-Overt Artist,' a novel..." which could very well be that title of some young literary hipster's book about a narcoleptic, but the actual title is " The Sleep-Over Artist ." But we much prefer his short story, The Hot-Dog War which you can find on his site, Mr. Beller's Neighborhood , if you check out stories for the Upper West Side, specifically 73nd Street and Broadway, or in his book of short stories, The Seduction Theory The Times' Warren St. John looks at how George Plimpton planned, and entertained at , his parties. Perhaps Plimpton would have approved of Beller's roughhousing at parties Posted by Jen Chung in Books Media

    IN MEMORIAM: GEORGE PLIMPTON
    September 26, 2003
Writer and editor George Plimpton died last night at age 76. Jeffrey Brown looks at his career with Michael Dirda, senior editor of The Washington Post’s Book World.
JEFFREY BROWN: George Plimpton boxed with Archie Moore, pitched to Willie Mayes, and joined the circus, and he did all that, and much more, as a writer. He also helped found and edited for decades a leading literary journal, "The Paris Review." Plimpton was called a central figure in American letters when he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters last year. He died last night at age 76. Here to tell us more about him is Michael Dirda, senior editor of the "Washington Post" Book World and author of the new memoir, "An Open Book." Michael Dirda, welcome. MICHAEL DIRDA: Thank you. Good to be here. JEFFREY BROWN: The George Plimpton who many Americans know is the author of "Paper Lion" and other books, in which he thrust himself out into the playing fields as a sort of average guy and then wrote about it. Tell us about that. MICHAEL DIRDA: Well, he did that in the great age of new journalism, when reporters were suddenly discovering that they could be part of the story themselves. He took that even farther than a lot of people like Tom Wolfe, although perhaps not extravagantly as, say, Hunter Thompson. He did represent an average guy on the playing field, although his image was, as we came to know him from television, rather patrician, he had a very plumy, kind of prep school New England accent.

    Audio Interview with George Plimpton
George Plimpton, best know as the author of Paper Lion: Confessions of a Last-String Quarterback , was also the cofounder of The Paris Review . In 1986, Plimpton bicycled to Don Swaim's New York studio for this interview. Plimpton started the magazine in 1953 in Paris, France with a group of English speaking writers living in the area after World War II. Several literary magazines were beginning at the time and as an English language review, it was hard to believe that the magazine would find success starting out in Paris. However, due the diversity of the content, including more than the usual criticisms and essays, the magazine's success exploded in America. Eventually the publication moved over to the states, where it continues to find success. Listen to the George Plimpton interview with Don Swaim, 1986 Download Free RealPlayer

    LETTERS FROM:
    Martin Amis
Norman Mailer J.D. Salinger Camille Paglia
I wanted to drop you a note thanking you for the lovely get well gift. The teddy bear is most cuddly and brings me great comfort during the worst times.
The doctors say the pull is "massive" and that apparently the muscle of the groin region simply "folded up like a window shade." Indeed, as you say in your card, it is fortunate that my screams were drowned out by those of your devoted following (justifiably) hailing your every move, for the journalist, even one who gets so close to his subjects as I do, should never become the focus of the event himself.
I have made space in the Review for your interview. I feel it is the proper time to expand our borders beyond poets and writers and critics to include other important artists such as yourself. I would conduct the interview myself, but I fear that the Vicodin (as pleasurable as it is) has left my mind too dulled to do the work justice. Rushdie has stepped forth and volunteered. We shall see...
