February 11, 2001 George Plimpton is the best-selling author and editor of nearly thirty books and the editor of The Paris Review . Perhaps he is best known for his practice of covering professional sports by participating in them as an amateur. In his first exploit, in 1959, he boxed three rounds with light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore. Plimpton wrote articles for Sports Illustrated about his experiences, many of which evolved into books, notably Out of My League (1961), about pitching against the great batters of the American and National baseball leagues; Paper Lion (1966), about playing quarterback at the summer training camp of the Detroit Lions; and The Bogey Man (1968), about participating in three golf tournaments on the pro circuit. Ernest Hemingway called Out of My League , "beautifully observed and incredibly conceived."
Truman Capote (1997), subtitled, "in which various friends, enemies, acquaintances, and detractors recall his turbulent career." Kirkus Reviews called the book "an A-list gabfest" and remarked on "the sheer variety of impressions, anecdotes and reminiscences about an inarguably remarkable, mercurial individual." The book is frequently compared to Plimpton's best selling

    6. A Tribute To George Plimpton
George Plimpton died on September 26, 2003. Our next storyteller is George Plimpton, but before I bring him on stage I want to tell you something about him.
    http://www.jonathanames.com/plimpton.html
George Plimpton died on September 26, 2003. He was an amazing human being. He was intrepid, gleeful, generous, funny, silly, brilliant. He was a father, a husband, a brother, a writer, an editor, a performer. He was very kind to me, and I will always be wildly grateful that I had the good fortune to know him. The following is an excerpt from my book, My Less Than Secret Life . It is from the chapter, "My Jewish Cousin, George Ames Plimpton." The time period in which this was written was October of 1999, a few weeks before my first and only boxing match. In preparation for this match, which is briefly referred to in this excerpt, I read George Plimpton's great book, Shadowbox , which I highly recommend. I also recommend subscribing to his beautiful magazine, The Paris Review My Jewish Cousin, George Ames Plimpton Just a few weeks ago I had a particularily good escapade at Joe's Pub on Lafayette Street. I was the host for a night of storytelling put together by this group called The Moth, which has storytelling nights every two weeks or so at different locations it flits around though Joe's Pub with its clubby, candle-lit atmosphere seems to be The Moth's favorite venue. The theme of the night I was hosting was "icons." So the performers told stories about icons in their lives, and in addition to my hosting duties, I also told a story about my dear childhood pal, Jonathan "Fat" Eder, who for me is an icon of friendship and inspired, nutty behavior.

    about this product Description
Every one of his Antarctic expeditions ended in failure. His life "off the ice" was a series of failed get-rich-quick schemes. And yet the name of Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) remains a byword for charismatic leadership, raw courage, and endurance in the face of overwhelming odds. Perhaps the greatest hero of the heroic age of polar exploration, Shackleton's crowning achievement was to bring all 28 of his men home safely after their ship was crushed in pack ice in 1915 - an epic journey capped by an 800-mile small-boat voyage through some of the planet's roughest waters. In Ernest Shackleton , writer and media personality George Plimpton not only tells Shackleton's story, but recounts his own recent adventures following Shackleton's footsteps through the bleak, beautiful seas and islands at the bottom of the world. Reading George Plimpton's new book on Truman Capote Truman Capote, In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career feels like being at a fabulous cocktail party, where the champagne is flowing and the gossip is juicy. Truman brought together the worlds of literature, politics, money, art, fashion, media, and film; in short, he was a locus of celebrity. Written as an "oral biography," the book is about as much fun as one can have between the pages of a book.
For this issue of Bold Type, we feature Truman Capote's Black and White Ball. An excerpt describes what it was like to have attended, told by those envied few who were invited. Look through a gallery of photos from the still-legendary event and check out an interview with author and participatory journalist George Plimpton.

George Plimpton was an elegant man. He was an aristocrat of the spirit and one of my finest friends. Being a friend of Plimpton's carried a special responsibility of behaving in a style that he would be proud of. You didn't want to let him down, and George had extremely high standards. Every moment of being in his company was part of my Education. It was a proud moment when I first introduced my son Juan to "my friend, George Plimpton." There was no need to explain anything extra about George: You didn't have to know him to realize that he was genuine American Royalty, and that it was a privilege to be in the same room with him. I loved George, and he has been a gigantic influence in my life. When I think of him I see a tall loose-walking man strolling through the lobby of the Carlyle Hotel with an armload of fresh Calla Lillies.

When did you first hear about Truman Capote?
I read his book Other Voices, Other Rooms and of course was aware of the turmoil surrounding its publication.
What were your initial thoughts on his writing?
I remember being awed by itthe uniqueness and nicety of styleand I suspect I was a bit jealous because we were more or less of the same generation.
Can you tell us about your interactions with him?
He lived not far from usless than a milein Sagaponack, Long Island. I often saw him at dinner parties and house partiesoften in Florida where he stayed with the Loel Guinesses in Manalapan.
Did you ever interview him for The Paris Review?
Yes. He was interviewed in the early '60s by a young novelist, Pati Hill.
    What inspired this book?
Truman struck me as a perfect subject for an oral biography, namely someone who has moved through a considerable strata of contemporaries: from murderers to the highest level of society.
Tell us about how the book is written, a form you call "oral biography." In brief, an oral biography consists of edited transcripts stitched together in chronological order to form a seamless whole.

TIME Great Images America Online Transcript from June 14, 1999 Timehost : Hello everyone. Welcome to our TIME chat tonight. We're very pleased to be joined by writer/editor/actor/and Renaissance man George Plimpton. He's just written an article for the TIME 100 about Muhammad Ali . Welcome, Mr. Plimpton! George Plimpton : Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be talking to those who want to hear what I have to offer about Muhammad Ali. Timehost : Before we start, I'd just like to ask about how you came to write the article about Ali. George Plimpton : Well, I was asked to by the editors of TIME. I had written a book on boxing called "Shadow Box," which was largely about Muhammad Ali since I was a second-string boxing writer for Sports Illustrated. The first string writer was Mark Kram, a interesting name since it's the same backwards as forwards. He was unable to fly on planes, had a phobia about that, so I was sent to a number of fights overseas which he could not get to . The Frazier-Forman fight in Jamaica, and most particularly, the fight in Zaire, "The Rumble in the Jumble," as it was called between Ali and Forman. I covered many of Muhammad Ali's fights, including those he fought under the name Cassius Clay, and indeed the fight in which he won the world championship against Liston in Miami. So after all this, the TIME editors thought I could produce 700 words on the champ.
