This highly successful playwright transformed the mild-mannered Greek New Comedy written more than a century earlier into a more playful and ribald style. Unlike Terence, whose plays were thoroughly Hellenic, Plautus introduces into his borrowings Roman characters, customs, and objects. Plautus is the earliest Latin author of whom we have more than fragments; twenty-one of his plays are extant. OTHER HARVARD BOOKS BY PLAUTUS

http://web.dkm.cz/antika/plautus.htm

Biography Plautus, who wrote in the last part of the third century and the first part of the second century B.C., was the most popular of all Roman comic writers. According to the Roman critic Cicero, Plautus was "choice, urbane, talented, and witty." His plays were written to entertain, and they delighted Romans for a long time. During the empire, mime became the favorite form of entertainment; but even when Plautus’s plays were no longer being produced, they were still read and admired for their farcical situations and mastery of colloquial Latin. In modern times, adaptations of plays by Plautus have continued to be extremely popular. By concentrating on domestic situations and romance, Plautus gave

Roman Writer
Titus Maccius Plautus was one of the most prolific comic dramatists of ancient Rome, but only 21of his comdies survived. Plautus' farcial humor and control of the Latin language rank him as Rome's greatest comic playwright. Later playwrights used some of his plays in their own works, like Shakespeare's 'Comedy of Errors' is based on Plautus' play 'Menaechmi'.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Titus Maccius Plautus, comic playwright of the Roman Republic See also Roman Republic (19th century). The Roman Republic traditionally lasted as a representative government of Rome and its territories from 509 BC until the establishment of the Roman Empire, typically placed at 44 BC or 27 BC. The city of Rome stands on the Tiber River very near the west coast of Italy. It marked the northernmost border of the territory in which the Latin language was spoken and the southern edge of Etruria, the territory in which the Etruscan language was spoken.

Plautus's comedies, which are the earliest surviving intact works in Latin literature The literature of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire written in the Latin language. The periods of Latin literature are conventionally divided into "Golden" Latin, or Golden Age, which covers approximately the period from the start of the first century BC up to the mid-first century AD, and Silver Latin, which covers the remainder of the Classical period. Anything after the mid-second century comes under the blanket description of "late" Latin literature, and tends to be studied for the light it sheds on the development of Latin into the Romance languages rather than for its literary merit (though there are exceptions, eg. Augustine of Hippo.)

All surviving Roman comedy shows the influence of Greek originals. Plautus (254-184 B.C.) is among Rome's most famous playwrights and may have been a member of a troupe that performed Atellan comedy. His middle name is Maccius (a form of Maccus, the clown of the farces), possibly alluding to the role he had habitually played. Tradition has it that he was in the theater for a good while before he began writing comedies. His first plays date from 205 B.C., about thirty-five years after Livius introduced Greek drama to the Romans. No one knows how many plays he wrote, and it has been common to assign many unauthenticated titles to him. About twenty-one plays exist that are thought to be his, the most famous of which are
