Plautus (c. 254 BC-184 BC)
Titus Maccius Plautus, comic playwright of the Roman Republic; the years of his life are uncertain, but his plays were first produced between about 205 and 184 B.C.E. Twenty-one plays survive. Plautus's comedies, which are the earliest surviving intact works in Latin literature, are all adaptations of Greek models for a Roman audience. The characters remain in Greek settings, or perhaps a Greek setting imagined by a Roman. His most typical character is the clever slave who manipulates his master, undermining some of our conceptions of normal social relationships in the Roman world. 25. Menaechmi Or The Twin Brothers
A synopsis of the play by plautus.
http://www.theatrehistory.com/ancient/plautus003.html
THE MENAECHMI or THE TWIN BROTHERS A synopsis of the play by Plautus This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama There seems to be no record of the time and circumstances of the production of this play during the time of Plautus. Its earliest revival ocurred under the direction of Ercole I, Duke of Ferrara, early in the Middle Ages, probably between 1486 and 1550. MOSCHUS, a merchant of Syracuse, had twin sons who were like as two peas. When the boys were seven years old, Moschus took one of them, Menaechmus, with him on a business trip to Tarentum. There the boy became separated from his father and lost in the crowd. He was found later and adopted by a wealthy merchant of Epidamnus. In this city he grew to manhood and married a rich wife. Meanwhile, so great was the grief of parents and grandparents for the lost boy that the remaining twin whose name was Sosicles was renamed Menaechmus. When the latter reached young manhood he set out with his slave, Messenio, to cover the known world in search of his twin. At the opening of the action, Menaechmus Sosicles and Messenio have just arrived at Epidamnus after six years of wandering. Just prior to their appearance on the street where Menaechmus of Epidamnus lives, the latter has as usual been quarreling with his wife. To spite her he has stolen a rich mantle of hers to give to the courtesan, Erotium. He requests this lady to prepare a feast for himself and his Parasite, Peniculus, while they go to the market place to transact some business.

PLAUTUS
Titus Macc(i)us PLAUTUS, 250's(?)BC - 184? BC The biographical tradition reports that Plautus was born Macc(i)us, an Umbrian from Sarsina (in northern Italy) and acquired the cognomen Plotus/Plautus for his flat feet. On coming to Rome, he worked as a stagehand, and possibly as an actor. He left Rome on a business venture and when that failed, worked for a miller after returning. All these details are suspect. In alphabetical order, his surviving plays run as follows: Latin title English title Date (if at all known) Amphitryo Amphitryo Asinaria Horse-Play ... Casina after 186BC Cistellaria Little Casket c.201 BC Curculio Weevil Epidicus A Man Who's Been Sued ... Poor Carthaginian 188/87 BC Pseudolus Trickster 192/91 BC Rudens Rope Stichus Stichus ... Wallet Some 130 plays circulated under Plautus' name in antiquity. According to Varro in the first century BC, the above 21 plays were generally considered authentic, but opinions varied on others. A handful of fragments from at least 32 different plays (not counting the canonical 21) survive. Lack of testimony and frequent revivals of Plautus' plays make dating any plays hazardous.

Definition: PLAUTUS The greatest Roman comic playwright, Titus Maccius Plautus was born c . 254 B.C. in Umbria and died in 184. He may have joined a traveling acting group that performed farces. After leaving Umbria, he became a Roman soldier. While stationed in southern Italy he was exposed to the Greek New Comedy and the plays of Menander. When his business plans failed, Plautus tried writing comedies and made a success of it by using puns and slapstick gags to make plays entertaining enough to compete with the games for audience attention. Plautus eventually obtained Roman citizenship and was entitled to three names. Plautus probably refers to his flatfeet; Maccius to his comedic nature. He was reputed to have written 130 pieces (based on Greek New Comedy), of which 21 survive, including
