Narcissi Lawrence said in Apocalypse that when he heard people complain of being lonely he knew their affliction: ". . . they have lost the Cosmos." It is easy to agree with Lawrence, but less easy to understand what he means. Yet if there is a way of approaching Plath's tragedy, it is only through an analysis of what Plath lost and what she was half-conscious of having lost: I am solitary as grass. What is it I miss? Shall I ever find it, whatever it is? ("Three Women") We must take this loss as a real one, not a rhetorical echoing of other poets' cries; not a yearning that can be dismissed by the robust and simple-minded among us who like that formidably healthy and impossible Emerson, sought to dismiss the young people of his day "diseased" with problems of original sin, evil, predestination, and the like by contemptuously diagnosing their worries as "the soul's mumps, and measles, and whooping-coughs" ("Spiritual Laws"). Emerson possessed a consciousness of such fluidity and explorative intelligence that any loss of the cosmos for him could seem nothing more serious than an adolescent's perverse rebelliousness, at its most profound a doubt to be answered with a few words.

Encyclopedia

Plath, Sylvia Plath, Sylvia, , American poet, b. Boston. Educated at Smith College and Cambridge, Plath published poems even as a child and won many academic and literary awards. Her first volume of poetry, The Colossus (1960), is at once highly disciplined, well crafted, and intensely personal; these qualities are present in all her work. Ariel (1968), considered her finest book of poetry, was written in the last months of her life and published posthumously, as were Crossing the Water (1971) and Winter Trees (1972). These late poems reveal an objective detachment from life and a growing fascination with death. They are rendered with impeccable and ruthless art, describing the most extreme reaches of Plath's consciousness and passions. Her one novel, The Bell Jar (1971), originally published in England under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas in 1962, is autobiographical, a fictionalized account of a nervous breakdown Plath had suffered when in college. Plath was married to the poet Ted Hughes and was the mother of two children. She committed suicide in London in Feb., 1963.

Learn More About
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my eyes and all is born again.
This seemed a dreary and wasted life for a girl with fifteen years of straight A's, but I knew that's what marriage was like, because cook and clean and wash was just what Buddy Willard's mother did from morning till night, and she was the wife of a university professor and had been a private school teacher herself.
If neurotic is wanting two mutually exclusive things at one and the same time, then I'm neurotic as hell. I'll be flying back and forth between one mutually exclusive thing and another for the rest of my days.
Nothing stinks like a pile of unpublished writing.
There must be quite a few things a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them.
Too much attention to health is a hindrance to learning, to invention, and to studies of any kind, for we are always feeling suspicious shootings and swimmings in our heads, and we are prone to blame studies for them.

96. Plath, Sylvia (Harpers.org)
Harper s Magazine. plath, sylvia. Frequent bouts of ill health perhaps contributed to her suicide in February 1963. This is plath, sylvia, a human being.
http://www.harpers.org/SylviaPlath.html
Plath, Sylvia Sources Of German-Austro-American parentage, her father, a biologist, died when she was only eight years old. She graduated from Smith College in 1955, having recovered from severe depression, leading to attempted suicide in 1953. Her only novel was The Bell Jar (1963). She lived in New England until her marriage to Ted Hughes in 1956. Thereafter they divided their time between England and America. Her first volume of poetry, The Colossus , appeared in 1960. Her style is terse, lyrical, frequently witty and revealing a fine ear, with remarkable metrical skills. Her vision edges on the abyss of madness, pain and death; yet this is counterbalanced by a delight in the richness of life, particularly the natural world. Frequent bouts of ill health perhaps contributed to her suicide in February 1963. This is Plath, Sylvia a human being . She is part of An American Album: Authors , which is part of An American Album , which is part of Harper's Magazine Bookstore , which is part of Harpers.org
