Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was just beginning his brilliant career as a novelist, poet, and playwright when this volume of poetry was published in 1901. In that same year he published his first novel, "L'esclusa" ("The Shunned Woman"). This volume of poems, named after the bagpipes used by Italian shepherds in the south, is signed by Pirandello and inscribed "to the poet Guido Mazzoni." Other well-known works by this author include the novel "The Late Mattia Pascal" (1904), and the play "Six Characters in Search of an Author" (1920). Pirandello's plays are often seen as forerunners for theatre of the absurd. Typical for Pirandello's plays is to show how fiction mixes with reality and how people see things in very different way. Art was for Pirandello the ultimate paradox, in which reality is at the same time is true and false, and the unmasking of illusion often causes violence. Pirandello's works include novels, hundreds of short stories, and c. 40 plays, some of which are written in Sicilian dialect. "I hate symbolic art in which the presentation loses all spontaneous movement in order to become a machine, an allegory - a vain and misconceived effort because the very fact of giving an allegorical sense to a presentation clearly shows that we have to do with a fable which by itself has no truth either fantastic or direct; it was made for the demonstration of some moral truth." (from Playwrights on Playwriting , ed. by Toby Cole, 1961)

Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was born in Girgenti, Sicily. He studied philology at Rome and at Bonn and wrote a dissertation on the dialect of his native town (1891). From 1897 to 1922 he was professor of aesthetics and stylistics at the Real Istituto di Magistere Femminile at Rome. Pirandello's work is impressive by its sheer volume. He wrote a great number of novellas which were collected under the title Novelle per un anno (15 vols., 1922-37). Of his six novels the best known are Il fu Mattia Pascal The Late Mattia Pascal I vecchi e i giovani The Old and the Young Si gira Shoot! ], and Uno, nessuno e centomila One, None, and a Hundred thousand
But Pirandello's greatest achievement is in his plays. He wrote a large number of dramas which were published, between 1918 and 1935, under the collective title of Maschere nude Naked Masks ]. The title is programmatic. Pirandello is always preoccupied with the problem of identity. The self exists to him only in relation to others; it consists of changing facets that hide an inscrutable abyss. In a play like Right You Are (If You Think You Are) ], two people hold contradictory notions about the identity of a third person. The protagonist in

Pirandello By courtesy of the Italian Institute, London (b. June 28, 1867, Agrigento, Sicily, Italyd. Dec. 10, 1936, Rome), Italian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer, winner of the 1934 Nobel Prize for Literature . With his invention of the "theatre within the theatre" in the play Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore Six Characters in Search of an Author ), he became an important innovator in modern drama. Pirandello was the son of a sulfur merchant who wanted him to enter commerce. Pirandello, however, was not interested in business; he wanted to study. He first went to Palermo, the capital of Sicily, and, in 1887, to the University of Rome. After a quarrel with the professor of classics there, he went in 1888 to the University of Bonn, Ger., where in 1891 he gained his doctorate in philology for a thesis on the dialect of Agrigento. In 1894 his father arranged his marriage to Antonietta Portulano, the daughter of a business associate, a wealthy sulfur merchant. This marriage gave him financial independence, allowing him to live in Rome and to write. He had already published an early volume of verse, Mal giocondo Pasqua di Gea (1891; dedicated to Jenny Schulz-Lander, the love he had left behind in Bonn) and a translation of J.W. von Goethe's

Luigi Pirandello Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867 in Girgenti (now Agrigento) on the island of Sicily. Luigi's father was a fairly prosperous sulphur dealer and intended that his son should follow in his footsteps, but the boy demonstrated a studious bent early on, and as a result, he was provided with a literary schooling. He entered the University of Rome in 1887, but later transferred to Bonn University where he completed his doctoral thesis, a study of his native Sicilian dialect. Pirandello's first creative efforts were in the realm of versehe translated Goethe's Roman elegiesbut after falling under the influence of Sicilian novelist Capuana who became his friend and advisor, Pirandello turned his attention to naturalistic fiction. His first novel, The Outcast (1893), contains the seeds that would blossom in his later writing. Pirandello wrote his first widely acclaimed novel, The Late Mattia Pascal , in 1904. By the time the First World War broke out ten years later, he had published two other novels and numerous short stories. It was not until 1916, however, that he turned his attention to the theatre. He quickly became enthralled by this new medium, and became quite prolific, turning out as many as nine plays in one year. His first three plays

About Luigi Pirandello

Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867 in Girgenti, now Agrigento, on the island of Sicily. His father was a sulfur dealer and expected his son to take up his trade, but Luigi excelled in his academics and was allowed to pursue a literary schooling. He entered the University of Rome in 1887, later transferring to Bonn University where he completed a doctoral thesis on his native Sicilian dialect. Pirandello initially translated Goethe's Roman elegies as his first creative effort. After meeting up with the Sicilian novelist Capuana, Pirandello focused his attention on naturalistic fiction. The Outcast in 1893 was his first novel and contained the roots of things that would appear in his later writing. Pirandello¹s first widely acclaimed novel, The Late Mattia Pascal , was written in 1904. Within the next ten years, up until the First World War, he published two other novels and numerous short stories. In 1916 he first focused his attention on the theater and quickly became enthralled by the possibilities it presented. Inspired, Pirandello wrote nine plays in one year, including his first three plays

Luigi Pirandello
A Biographical Sketch
There seems to be little doubt that one of the most influential modern authors/playwrights of the early twentieth century was Luigi Pirandello. Today, his reputation is still of worldwide renown, even as we face entrance into the twenty-first century. His works are centerpieces of study and production. He became the first Italian author/playwright to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Luigi Pirandello was a playwright, novelist, short story writer, poet and one of the leading dramatists of the twentieth century. He was born in Girgenti [now Agrigento], Sicily, located on the south-central coast of the island on June 28, 1867. His father, owner of a rich sulfur mine, played an important role in the industrial and commercial life of Girgenti and Porto Empedocle. Being born into an economically well-to-do family promised him a comfortable childhood and adolescence, which allowed him privileges not enjoyed by many others. After early private schooling at home, Pirandello attended secondary schools in Girgenti, and later, in Palermo. This was followed by studies at the University of Rome and the University of Bonn in Germany, where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree. During this period of study, he wrote and published two volumes of poetry. Although his father wished him to follow a business career, he found no desire, pleasure or success in that pursuit. He settled in Rome as a professional writer in 1893.
