Belated Reviews #3: H Beam Piper
H Beam Piper wrote mostly in the fifties and early sixties. He died thinking himself a failure, before receiving word that may have made a difference. Piper is a personal favorite, so I have more trouble than usual judging which of his works a new reader would enjoy today. The political tenor of Piper's works is fairly consistent: On the one side, reasonable men, willing to do what needs to be done and competent to do it. On the other side, corrupt officials, crooked lawyers, hypocritical or misguided (liberal) idealists, and the mob. The mob is important: Piper was well-read in history, and his future history features what he perceived to be a perennial tendency for the barbarians at the gates or the barbarians within to short-sightedly pull down civilization. Many contemporary authors duplicate his stance, but not the gently ironic tone of much of his writing. Most of Piper's works (except for two novels) have been reprinted. The majority form a future history of humanity in space repeating the errors of the past. The majority of the rest belong to his 'Paratime' sequence, about a civilization that spans (or at least interacts with) a multitude of alternate Earths, and whose Paratime Police attempt to oversee those interactions. Piper's books include Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen (***+). Sometimes the Paratime Police mess up, and this particular mess drops a member of the Pennsylvania State Police into an alternate medieval-tech land which is about to be conquered and destroyed at the behest of a theocracy which owns the local gunpowder monopoly. Fortunately Calvin (soon Kalvan) remembers his chemistry and even more important his military history. This book is probably the main inspiration for the entire military-sf subgenre whose main contemporary practitioners are Drake, Pournelle, and Stirling. It focuses as much (or more) upon the technological, logistical, and political problems Kalvan faces as it does upon his battles.

H. Beam Piper
Creator of Paratime and author of Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and the Little Fuzzy , H. Beam Piper claimed to have been a writer for 26 years before making his first sale, "Time and Time Again," in 1946. His luck didn't get much better. Piper enjoyed history and visiting famous places. He wrote historical articles with some success but failed at writing historical fiction. Piper collected swords, knives, and guns (especially revolvers) and an article appeared in the Altoona newspaper showing a photo of Piper and some of his collection. Without a family, Piper gravitated to the fans and collectors that surrounded science fiction and gun collecting. He smoked a pipe all of his adult life and often was not in the best of health (his breakfast was a 7-Up and a pot of black coffee and a nightcap of a glass of rum). When Piper attended the World's SF Convention at Pittsburg in 1960, he was gaunt. "I don't like to leave messes when I go away

H. Beam Piper
Another science fiction writer whom I have discovered and enjoyed in the past few years is H. Beam Piper. Part of the reason I like Piper's writing, besides his characterisation, is because Piper, who died in 1964, wrote according to the constraints of his time, and thus avoided much of the gratuitous sex and violence which later and lesser writers seem to consider necessary. Unfortunately, he had a few weird ideas, one of which was a firm belief in reincarnation. Thus, when his debts had piled up to the point where he could no longer pay his bills, he committed suicide, believing that he could thus wipe his slate clean and be reincarnated. Ironically, his agent was trying to reach him with the cheque for his latest sale at the time. Little Fuzzy

I first discovered Piper's work when I picked up a reissue copy of Little Fuzzy (because of the cover, which shows a group of small, furry aliens flanking a human being armed with a ray gun) at the airport in Halifax a few years ago, and was quite entranced.

Over The Shoulder. my So, when I found a few technical errors in the fictional scenarios which form part of the first part of the book, I had my review half-written in my mind already, just primed to spew out all my vitriol about alarmist, ill-informed technophobes. Well, this isn't going to be that review. Feldhahn has researched the subject carefully, and (those few errors I mentioned notwithstanding) presents a reasoned and realistic picture of what is likely to happen in a little over nine moths from now. The power will not suddenly go out everywhere at the stroke of midnight, but a few places with power utilities which have not prepared adequately will probably get some blackouts. Not every bank or shop will go out of business, but some will. (Estimates vary from 5% to 15%.) Some companies which have prepared adequately for the rollover will actually increase their business by picking up the customers marooned by those companies which go under. Civilisation will not grind to a halt, but some people will lose their jobs, and that means that requests for help from government and charities will increase at the same time as revenues decrease.

"Omnilingual", by H. Beam Piper
[First in a series about Linguistics in Science Fiction. Fair warning: I plan to spoil the ending How would you decipher texts in an unknown language, written in an unknown writing system? H. Beam Piper 's short story "Omnilingual" , originally published in 1957, is about an archaeological expedition on Mars, exploring the remains of a dead civilization. The expedition's linguist is confronted with a seemingly insurmountable problem: texts in an ancient language with no remaining speakers, and for which no bilingual text exists. What's an Earth linguist on Mars to do? This story is good-old-fashioned science fiction. Mars is almost, but not quite, dead: the Martian civilization is gone and the Martians are extinct, but there's still some oxygen in the atmosphere, and some life survives in the dry ocean basins. The expedition is large and well equipped, and a bit reckless—for working space, they're in the habit of caulking up all the cracks in 50,000-year-old buildings, pressurizing them, and then smoking cigarettes in the resulting pure-oxygen environment, presumably all the while laughing in the face of danger. Our heroine is Martha Dane, Archaeologist. She's been collecting scraps of Martian writing, trying to decipher the language, but it doesn't look promising.

by H. Beam Piper
Review by
Robert Wilfred Franson Ace, New York, 2001; 424 pages September 2001
The Complete Paratime collects the six science-fiction stories of H. Beam Piper's excellent Paratime series, ranging in length from short story to novel. Paratime and another way. A civilization on one of the time-lines millennia ago discovered the secret of paratemporal transportation that allows it to exploit the endless resources of these alternate Earths, via sidewise or lateral time-travel across the myriad time-lines. This First Level civilization also considers itself obliged to police their citizens across all these time-lines: the task of the Paratime Police. Varied police investigations and the related adventures provide the basis of the Paratime Series These stories appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1948-1955 and (as renamed) Analog in 1964-1965. They should be read in the order that they appeared, and as here collected in The Complete Paratime ; it's not so much that the plots build on previous ones, but the reader's comprehension of what Paratime is, how it works, and why the Paratime Police is important, progresses through the series. Murray Leinster's ground-breaking " Sidewise in Time " from 1934 is clearly a model, but H. Beam Piper is one of the great fictional theorists of alternate worlds.

Little Fuzzy is the first of three science fiction novels by H. Beam Piper that take place on the planet Zarathustra, which has been settled by a million humans so far. The planet is controlled by the Chartered Zarathustra Company. One day Jack Holloway, an old prospector, finds something that looks like a small monkey with golden fur; it makes sounds like yeek. He aptly names this creature Little Fuzzy. This first Fuzzy is introduced in Chapter 2, and even before his kin are introduced in Chapter 3, we're on the side of the Fuzzies. It's been the driest Spring in centuries on Zarathustra, and there is a record land-prawn population. The Fuzzies have been drawn south along with their food source. Holloway finds his missing wood chisel being used by Little Fuzzy. He watches the Fuzzy skillfully behead a land-prawn with the chisel. Little Fuzzy and his family move in with Jack Holloway. Shortly the man shows the Fuzzy a canister with his colorful mineral collection: Little Fuzzy looked the can over, decided that the lid was a member of the class of things-that-screwed-onto-things and got it off. The inside of the lid was mirror-shiny, and it took him a little thought to discover that what he saw in it was only himself. He yeeked about that, and looked into the can. This, he decided, belonged to the class of things-that-can-be-dumped, like wastebaskets, so he dumped it on the floor. Then he began examining the stones and sorting them by color.
