Bio:
"Horace Beam Piper was born in 1904, the son of a Protestant minister. He had no formal education and at age eighteen went to work as a laborer for the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona yards. Throughout his life he was a reticent and guarded man and as a result we know little about his early years. He was largely self-educated; he obtained a deep knowledge of science and history: 'without subjecting myself to the ridiculous misery of four years in the uncomfortable confines of a raccoon coat.'"
"A solitary man to the end, Piper did not tell his friends of his financial predicament. Instead, he took a way out that could only be reasonable to a man who abhorred state handouts and was determined not to burden his friends and family. On Monday, November 9th, 1964, H. Beam Piper shut off all the utilities to his apartment in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, put painter's drop-cloths over the walls and floor, and took his own life with a handgun from his collection. In his suicide note, he gave an explanation that is pure Piper:
"I don't like to leave messes when I go away, but if I could have cleaned up any of this mess, I wouldn't be going away. H. Beam Piper'"

Belated Reviews #3: H Beam Piper
H Beam Piper wrote mostly in the fifties and early sixties. He died thinking himself a failure, before receiving word that may have made a difference. Piper is a personal favorite, so I have more trouble than usual judging which of his works a new reader would enjoy today. The political tenor of Piper's works is fairly consistent: On the one side, reasonable men, willing to do what needs to be done and competent to do it. On the other side, corrupt officials, crooked lawyers, hypocritical or misguided (liberal) idealists, and the mob. The mob is important: Piper was well-read in history, and his future history features what he perceived to be a perennial tendency for the barbarians at the gates or the barbarians within to short-sightedly pull down civilization. Many contemporary authors duplicate his stance, but not the gently ironic tone of much of his writing. Most of Piper's works (except for two novels) have been reprinted. The majority form a future history of humanity in space repeating the errors of the past. The majority of the rest belong to his 'Paratime' sequence, about a civilization that spans (or at least interacts with) a multitude of alternate Earths, and whose Paratime Police attempt to oversee those interactions. Piper's books include Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen (***+). Sometimes the Paratime Police mess up, and this particular mess drops a member of the Pennsylvania State Police into an alternate medieval-tech land which is about to be conquered and destroyed at the behest of a theocracy which owns the local gunpowder monopoly. Fortunately Calvin (soon Kalvan) remembers his chemistry and even more important his military history. This book is probably the main inspiration for the entire military-sf subgenre whose main contemporary practitioners are Drake, Pournelle, and Stirling. It focuses as much (or more) upon the technological, logistical, and political problems Kalvan faces as it does upon his battles.

7. The Paratime Stories Of H. Beam Piper
A short article from Strangeworlds number 32, Jul/Aug 2000.
http://www.strangewords.com/archive/paratime.html
Paratime Roots
The grandaddy of parallel timeliners is, of course, H. Beam Piper. Piper took off from the solidly traditional sci fi field and produced a strikingly unique Universe that allowed him to explore some very interesting ideas. Piper was acutely interested in problems of class and class politics, the nature of time, and the foibles of history. His other major work, Federation series, dealt with colonialism in an even-handed way; The Uller Uprising , for example, is a fascinating science fiction treatment of an Indian mutiny against the British Empire, transfered into a space colonization scenario. The Paratime stories posit a time traveling police force whose mandate is to keep everyone else from discovering the secret of parallel timeline travel, in part to keep the chaos level down, and part to protect their world's lucrative trade with the other timelines. Piper's stories are different from the Standard Fare by having the rudiments of an ideology and an arcane theoretical structure. He was a capitalist who had an appreciation of socialism, and an arch scepticism of the tenets of modern society. This can get a bit extreme. At one point, Piper extolls the use of nuclear war as just the thing to harness willy nilly overpopulation.
The best place to begin the Paratime journey is with Ace's Paratime , a great selection of short works following one of the Paratime cops through a few of his cases. The tales invariably start off in a fairly straightforward way, then veer off into some pretty Strange territory. One of his stories explores the political ramifications of proving that reincarnation is a fact. This embedding of the exotic within the ordinary creates a tension in Piper's stories that raises them above the mainline of science fiction of his time. Just when it seems like it's just another adventure story, Piper leads the reader into unexpected speculation and unforseen consequences. And all this with a sly and critical wink at contemporary society and politics.

H. Beam Piper has been my favorite storyteller since the early '80's. I discovered him through an employee at a game shop who told me about the influence of Space Viking on the role-playing game Traveller . Since that was during the time of the Ace reprints, I got hooked (and have since worn out many a copy of Space Viking as well as other Piper books). The following file is based on the posting by William Taylor to the Piper Mailing List on 2/26/2001. I did a rough conversion to import it into ChView (here are some screenshots of this file from ChView). This information is based strictly on what William posted and has not been corrected for orientation to galactic coordinates. Here is a Java version of ChView showing the TFH Federation according to the above files. TFH.chv (To download, shift + click) One of the best Piper websites I have found is at www.zarthani.net Here is H. Beam Piper's Rebel Raider article from the December 1950 True Magazine. I finally got it OCR'd and cleaned up. If you find anything that looks like an error, please let me know and I will go back and verify it from the original text.
