Violence is really only an expression of the question of dominance and subservience, which is possibly a repeated theme in my plays. I wrote a short story a long time ago called The Examination, and my ideas of violence carried on from there. That short story dealt very explicitly the with two people in one room having a battle of an unspecified nature, in which the question was one of who was dominant at what point and how they were going to be dominant and what tools they would use to achieve dominance and how they would try to undermine the other person's dominance. A threat is constantly there: it's got to do with this question of being in the uppermost position, or attempting to be."
Harold Pinter 1930 - Dialogue between characters in Pinter's plays can often seem enigmatic, and its purpose obscure, but it becomes less so when we realise that as often as not a battle is taking place between the characters, and that identifiable strategies are being employed. In this essay I should like to consider some of those battles, particularly in

His early work is often associated with the theatre of the absurd Pinter was born in Hackney in London , and briefly studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He published poetry as a young man, and began working in the theatre as an actor . His first play The Room , came in 1957. The same year he began work on The Birthday Party , probably his first play that is widely performed today. Initially, it was a flop, but following the success of The Caretaker in 1960, it was revived, and this time was well received. These plays, and other early ones such as The Homecoming (1964), have sometimes been labelled as displaying the "comedy of menace". They often take an apparently innocent situation, and turn it into a threatening and absurd one by means of characters acting in ways which seem inexplicable both to the audience and, sometimes, to other characters. He began to direct more through the , becoming an associate director of the National Theatre in 1973. His later plays tend to be shorter, and on subjects which might be thought of as more political, often appearing to be allegories on oppression. It was around the 1970s that Pinter began to be more vocal on political matters, taking a distinctly left-wing stance. He continually strives to bring

Pinterovy krajinomalby jdou svou vlastní cestou, jejíž milníky tvoøí více než ètyøicet her, dvacet scénáøù, poezie a próza.

God bless America
by Harold Pinter
In a poem written for the Guardian, the distinguished playwright Harold Pinter takes the US to task for its seemingly inexorable march towards war on Iraq Wednesday January 22, 2003
The Guardian Here they go again,
The Yanks in their armoured parade
Chanting their ballads of joy
As they gallop across the big world
Praising America's God. The gutters are clogged with the dead
The ones who couldn't join in
The others refusing to sing
The ones who are losing their voice
The ones who've forgotten the tune. The riders have whips which cut. Your head rolls onto the sand Your head is a pool in the dirt Your head is a stain in the dust Your eyes have gone out and your nose Sniffs only the pong of the dead And all the dead air is alive With the smell of America's God.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Harold Pinter (1930-) English playwright who achieved international success as one of the most complex post-World War II dramatists. Harold Pinter's plays are noted for their use of silence to increase tension, understatement, and cryptic small talk. Equally recognizable are the 'Pinteresque' themes - nameless menace, erotic fantasy, obsession and jealousy, family hatred and mental disturbance. "I don't know how music can influence writing, but it has been very important for me, both jazz and classical music. I feel a sense of music continually in writing, which is a different matter from having been influenced by it." (Harold Pinter in Playwrights at Work , ed. by George Plimpton, 2000) Harold Pinter was born in Hackney, a working-class neighborhood in London's East End, the son of a Jewish tailor. On the outbreak of World War II he was evacuated from the city; he returned to London when he was 14. "The condition of being bombed has never left me," Pinter later said. At school Pinter particularly read the works of Franz Kafka and Ernest Hemingway. He was educated at Hackney Downs Grammar School where he acted in school productions. He accepted a grant to study at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. After two unhappy years he left his studies. In 1949 Pinter was fined by magistrates for having, as a conscientious objector, refused to do his national service. "I could have gone to prison - I took my toothbrush to the trials - but it so happened that the magistrate was slightly sympathetic, so I was fined instead, thirty pounds in all. Perhaps I'll be called up again in the next war, but I won't go."

In 1958 I wrote the following:

"There are no hard distinctions between what is real and what is unreal, nor between what is true and what is false. A thing is not necessarily either true or false; it can be both true and false." I believe that these assertions still make sense and do still apply to the exploration of reality through art. So as a writer I stand by them but as a citizen I cannot. As a citizen I must ask: What is true? What is false?
