MILLENNIUM EVENING GUEST LECTURER
ROBERT PINSKY
ROBERT PINSKY is the current Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress. He is focusing his work on the Favorite Poem Project which will create an audio/video archive of 1000 Americans from every state with varying regional accents, ages, levels of education, professions and ethnicities reciting their favorite poems. He says, "The Favorite Poem Project offers a unique way to learn about poetry through people who love it. The archive will be a gift to the nation's future." Born in 1940 in Long Branch, New Jersey, Professor Pinsky first had his imagination captured just by the way words sounded such as the train conductor's cry, `Passengers going to Hoboken, change trains at Summit." He developed a love of music as a saxophonist and his initial writing was more often songs than poetry. He later earned a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University, and then attended Stanford University earning prestigious fellowships in support of his master's and doctoral work in English. "If anyone is around to ask in a thousand years, `Who were the Americans?' one of the three or four things they'll mention, I hope, is they created poetry that influenced the world." His collection of essays

The Old and the New
Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky Embodies Both
by Yvonne French Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky uses modern technology to write his poems, employs modern urban imagery in his poems, but, like an old master, refers often to classical antecedents and universal themes told and retold over the centuries. He is, in the words of author Jay Parini, both old and new. For example, he is an award-winning translator of The Inferno of Dante. Yet he is also poetry editor of Slate, an on-line magazine. The same spirit of old and new informs his main plan as Poet Laureate. In the "Favorite Poem Project," he wants 100 or more Americans to read poems they love on tape. The project is part of the Library's celebration of its bicentennial in 2000, which kicked off this month with a gala fund-raising event . The resulting archives will be, in Mr. Pinsky's words, "a record, at the end of the century, of what we choose, and what we do with our voices and faces, when asked to say aloud a poem that we love." Mr. Pinsky believes the human body responds instinctively when one reads aloud, much as people respond to being read to. The act of storytelling or reading a poem, he says, "engages the mind and the body in a genetically primary sensation that involves a column of air in the trunk and the production of syllables. The sensation causes comfort and alertness. Thus the individual body, not necessarily even the artist, can be a medium for art."

June 12, 2000. Talk about Pinsky's Poetry. In 1997, When Robert Pinsky was appointed the thirty-ninth poet laureate of the United States, his aim was to get more Americans without English degrees reading Longfellow, Dickens, Rita Dove, and Langston Hughes. And so he did. His stint as the public face of American poetry ended last month. Throughout his term, he's tried to get people to stop thinking about poetry as a scholarly pursuit, and start enjoying it. The measure of his success is not having created more poetry readings featuring prominent writers, it's that regular people are in the audience. He has been arguably the most visible and mainstream of poet laureates - on-line, on network televsion, on PBS. With his democratic attitude he created "The Favorite Poem Project" and invited all of us to think about the stanzas we cherish most. His dearest hope, he says on his way back to life as a regular poet, is that this particular effort changes the way poetry is taught in school. Guest: Robert Pinsky , poet, Professor at Boston University, and author of Jersey Rain Related Links

http://www.wesleyan.edu/newsrel/pinsky.html
Release date: Friday, Jan. 14, 2000
Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky to Deliver Annie Sonnenblick Lecture at Wesleyan University
Poet Laureate of the United States Robert Pinsky will deliver the annual Annie Sonnenblick Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m., in Memorial Chapel at Wesleyan University. "An Evening with Robert Pinsky" will begin with a talk and will include time for questions and answers. A book-signing and reception will conclude the evening. Tickets for the event are free, but required, and can be obtained by contacting the Wesleyan Box Office at (860) 685-3355. Pinsky is the 39th Poet Laureate of the United States, poetry editor of the on-line journal Slate and contributor to The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS. He also teaches in the Graduate Writing Program at Boston University. Believing that poetry is meant to be read out loud, Pinsky founded the Favorite Poem Project in 1997. He had discovered during his years of teaching that when students were asked to read aloud or talk about a poem they love, they showed a palpable connection to the poem. Originally envisioned as 100 Americans reciting their favorite poems, the project grew as news of the idea spread. One thousand people, who cross state, age, ethnic, and socio-economic borders, have been recorded for the project in the last three years; 200 also were videotaped reciting a favorite poem. Pinsky collected some of these poems and anthologized them in America's Favorite Poems , published in November.
