began his artistic career as a saxophone player, but Robert Pinsky switched to poetry in college. Even as a child, "I enjoyed reading things that I couldn't understand. I liked the smoky atmosphere and haze of reading something too old for me or simply opaque. I liked the mystery of it and figuring it out." As a poet, he seeks out the challenge of writing in an unusually public voice, conjuring "the way people spoke and the manners they had when I was a child in a largely black, working class neighborhood. I like thinking of them as part a continuum with people who have read a lot of books. In my work I've struggled to understand history not as the long-ago doings of kings and powerful people but as a kind of force, visible and sometimes subterranean, in everything people do." Pinsky began his heralded 1995 translation of Dante's "Inferno" when he was asked to translate just one canto and couldn't stop. "I always feel most relaxed and comfortable doing something that seems unlikely and that I'm not prepared for or expected to shine at. I was always the kid who preferred the pop quiz. Thinking about trying something impossible makes me feel light-hearted." On "Eve Tempted by the Serpent" by Defendente Ferrari, and in Memory of Congresswoman Barbara Jordan of Texas

Although Koufax pitched in era far different from today's world of major league baseball, his brillant career sparkles throughout the pages of Leavy's writing. Troy, New York Robert Pinsky , prize-winning poet, essayist, and translator, was named the 39th United States Poet Laureate in the fall of 1997. He is the author of five books of poetry, including Sadness and Happiness History of My Heart (1984), which won the William Carlos Williams Prize of the Poetry Society of American, The Want Bone (1991), and most recently, The Figured Wheel: New and Collected Poems 1966-1996 . In a review for the New York Times Book Review Katha Pollitt described one of Pinsky's great accomplishment as "the way he recoups for poetry some of the pleasure of prose: storytelling, humor, the rich texture of a world filled with people and ideas." Pinsky propelled Dante onto the best-seller list with his acclaimed 1994 verse translation of The Inferno of Dante: A New Verse Translation , which was awarded the 1995 Landon Prize in translation by the Academy of American Poets, the Los Angeles Times Book Award in poetry for 1995 and also a Book of the Month Club Editor’s Choice award. It was celebrated by Stephen Greenblatt as "the premier modern text for English-language readers to experience Dante's power." Currently a professor of graduate writing at Boston Unviersity, Pinsky is also the poetry editor of the weekly Internet magazine

Trusting the Sounds of Poetry: Robert Pinsky has a Mission Six months after the kickoff of the Poet Laureate’s Favorite Poem Project, the effort has garnered more than 2,500 written responses. His latest book, too, is intended to help more people hear poetry.
by Jane Hodges
Robert Pinsky, United States Poet Laureate, has just one lesson for America: Poetry is a musical experience. "I’m much more interested in how a poem sounds," he says, meaning how it sounds aloud. He’s not suggesting that honoring poetry means merely attending poetry readings. "I’d like people to trust that they can read a poem aloud, in their own voice."
Pinsky knows a book can only go so far in explaining poetry as a spoken, physical art. That’s where his second lesson comes in. Last spring, Pinsky launched the Favorite Poem Project during National Poetry Month. Though the kick-off reading for the project fell on a clammy April evening, the kind that sends the most die-hard New Yorker home in a cab to watch reruns, a line of umbrellas starting at the Town Hall Theatre began to snake its way down West 43rd Street and toward Sixth Avenue well before the theatre’s doors opened.
Crusty New York natives might have wondered are they there for a Broadway show? Spice Girls in town? Not exactly. The umbrellas were waiting for a star-studded list of folks to read verse. None of the readers billed themselves as poets, but each one had a favorite poem to share. TV newsman Ed Bradley read Nikky Finney’s "Uncles" and radio celeb Garrison Keillor read his favorite, James Wright’s "The Blessing." Politician Geraldine Ferraro read Rudyard Kipling’s "If," choreographer Bill T. Jones read from Derek Walcott’s epic "Omeros," pop artist Laurie Anderson read Seamus Heaney, and folk singer Suzanne Vega read T.S. Eliot’s "Preludes." High schoolers chose and read work by Sylvia Plath and Roald Dahl.

An Interview with Robert Pinsky
The following interview originally appeared in the Spring 1998 issue of Meridian a new journal at the University of Virginia, and is reprinted by permission of the editor.
Robert Pinsky is the Poet Laureate of the United States. A renowned poet, critic, and translator, his most recent books are The Figured Wheel: New and Collected Poems 1966-1996 (Noonday, 1996) and his translation of Dante's Inferno (Noonday, 1994), which received the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.
The following interview was conducted by phone. Pinsky, at his home in Boston, was finishing a photo-shoot. Midway through the interview, we were briefly interrupted as Pinsky showed the photographers out. The break has been included here because of the shift in mood it illustrates. Pinsky was allowed to talk about the pressures of his office as well as his hopes, long enough to permit us to glimpse the man behind the post.
Ted Genoways Meridian
How did you find out you had been named Poet Laureate?

I came home from giving a poetry reading, and there were three messages on my answering machine from the Library of Congress. I thought it probably wasn't an overdue book. [laughs]
