Marge Piercy was born March 31, 1936 in Detroit into a family that had been, like many others, affected by the Depression. Her mother, Bert Bernice Bunnin, born in Philadelphia, had lived also in Pittsburgh and Cleveland; her father Robert Douglas Piercy grew up in a small town in the soft coal mining region of Pennsylvania. They had not been living in Detroit long. Her father, out of work for some time, got a job installing and repairing heavy machinery at Westinghouse. When Piercy was little, they moved into a small house in a working-class neighborhood in Detroit which was black and white by blocks. Piercy had one brother, fourteen years older, her mother's son by a previous marriage. Piercy's maternal grandfather Morris was a union organizer murdered while organizing bakery workers. Her maternal grandmother, Hannah, of whom Piercy was particularly fond, was born in Lithuania, the daughter of a rabbi. "Grandmother Hannah was a great storyteller. She and my mother told many of the same stories, but always the stories came out differently." It was her maternal grandmother who gave Piercy her Hebrew name, Marah.

Poems by Marge Piercy
AVAILABLE LIGHT
Wellfleet sabbath

The hawk of the sun slowly shuts.
The breast of the bay is softly feathered
dove grey. The sky is barred like the sand
when the tide trickles out.
The great doors of the sabbath are swinging
open over the ocean, loosing the moon
floating up slow distorted vast, a copper
balloon just sailing free. The wind slides over the waves, patting them with its giant hand, and the sea stretches its muscles in the deep, purrs and rolls over. The sweet beeswax candles flicker and sigh, standing between the phlox and the roast chicken. The wine shines its red lantern of joy. Here on this piney sandspit, the Shekinah comes on the short strong wings of the seaside sparrow raising her song and bringing down the fresh clean night. WHAT BIG GIRLS ARE MADE OF Salt in the afternoon The room is a conch shell and echoing in it, the blood rushes in the ears, the surf of desire sliding in on the warm beach. The room is the shell of the moon snail, gorgeous predator

Classroom Issues and Strategies
I have taught Piercy's poems in a Women in Literature course offered for credit in general education and in a course on American Women Poets. Most students find her very direct and accessible, but some are unnerved by her openness in expressing her feelings and describing her experience while others are daunted by her high expectations of herself and other human beings. Students generally profit from small group discussions where they can share related experiences and discuss the pressures Piercy's poems exert on them. If I had enough time to use one of her novels in relationship to the poems, it would be wonderful to contrast their highly researched, intricate plots with the structures of the poems. Her own voice in the poems is direct; it's fascinating to see how she suspends it in the novels for various narrative purposes.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Piercy's poems raise important issues related to feminism, ecology, imperialism, civil rights, religious heritage, love, and effective relationships. Often one issue leads to another. Like Thoreau , she works at living ethically and peacefully in an environment ravaged by greed, anxiety, and fear.

80. Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy
Barbie Doll. by marge piercy. This girlchild was born as usual. and presented dolls that did peepee. and miniature GE ovens and irons.
http://pages.prodigy.net/beccawilliamson/barbie.htm
Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy This girlchild was born as usual and presented dolls that did pee-pee and miniature GE ovens and irons and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy. Then in the magic of puberty, a classmate said You have a great big nose and fat legs. She was healthy, tested intellegent, posessed strong arms and back, abundant sexual drive and manual dexterity. She went to and fro apologizing. Everyone saw a fat nose and thick legs. She was advised to play coy, exhorted to come on hearty, exersize, diet, smile, and wheedle. Her good nature wore out like a fan belt. So she cut off her nose and legs and offered them up. In the casket displayed on satin she lay with the undertaker's cosmetics painted on, a turned-up putty nose, dressed in a pink and white nightie. Doesn't she look pretty? everyone said. Consumation at last. To every woman a happy ending. back to poetry
