Piercy, Marge Out of Sight
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Dementia Euthanasia Institutionalization ... Power Relations Summary This poem is about how the mentally ill (especially those who are women/elderly) are pushed out of sight. No one wants to deal with them, so they are put away somewhere. Sometimes this punishment is more than usually unreasonable. One person in the poem is locked up because she refuses to do the dishes. Another's crime is asking the wrong person for help. This treatment is compared to witch burning and to cutting off the hands of thieves. Many think these practices are barbarous, yet they participate in hiding away suffering men and women. Commentary Piercy is very aware of the power dynamic involved in the treatment of the mentally ill. Those in power have the ability to deny and discard the weak. Piercy finds this practice extraordinarily barbaric; we treat our pets better, she suggests.

Synopsis of Sleeping with Cats
Called "breathtakingly ambitious" by T he New York Times for her novels' forays into war, history, the lives of the homeless, and the minds of cyborgs, Marge Piercy, one of the few writers of our time to be highly praised as both a poet and a novelist, turns her lens inward for the first time as she shares her thoughts on life and explores her development as a woman and writer. She revisits the people and places that have shaped her experiences and inspired her work. And she pays tribute to the one loving constant that has offered her comfort and meaning even as the faces and events in her life have changed: her beloved cats. With searing honesty Piercy tells of her strained childhood growing up in a religiously split working-class family in Detroit. She examines her myriad friendships and relationships, including two painful early marriages, and reveals their effects on her creativity and career. More than a reminiscence of things past, however

Piercy, Marge Cold Head, Cold Heart
Genre Poem Keywords Disease and Health Ordinary Life Patient Experience Suffering Summary This is a comic poem in which the narrator describes the experience of having a head cold. Commentary More comic than complex, this poem might work best as an exercise in reminding physicians of the pain of even the most simple of complaints. It also provides an example of poetic imagery for beginning poets or writers. Piercy's metaphors are straightforward but surprising. Woman on the Edge of Time
Marge Piercy
Ballantine Books 1983 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee I only read Woman on the Edge of Time because I twice saw it favourably compared with Ursula Le Guin 's The Dispossessed , but I enjoyed it so much that I have since read most of Marge Piercy's other novels. Woman on the Edge of Time is both a searing indictment of some of the fundamental assumptions of our society and an intriguing portrayal of a "utopian" alternative. Connie, the heroine, is a 37 year old Mexican-American living on welfare, who is incarcerated in a mental hospital and subjected to "mind-control" treatment. The realism of the narrative makes this really chilling (it is reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest ) and, combined with the knowledge we gradually acquire of her life story, it paints a bleak and far too plausible picture of how our society has institutionalised oppression of the weak. The story culminates with Connie's resolution to fight back, with a recognition that she is fighting a war on behalf of others as well as herself. To return to the comparison which prompted this review: Le Guin's The Dispossessed was very clearly in the classical anarchist tradition, though it incorporated some ideas from modern linguistics and ecology.

In 1957, she graduated from the University of Michigan (where she won prizes for poetry and fiction) and earned an M.A. from Northwestern University (1958). She was active in social and political causes and fought for equal treatment of women and minorities while opposing the Vietnam War. She is an extraordinarily prolific writer. Among her more than a dozen novels are

    Notes on Life and Works
Marge Piercy was born March 31, 1936, in Detroit, of mother Bert Bunnin Piercy and father Robert Douglas Piercy. She was brought up Jewish by her mother and grandmother. In Early Grrrl , Marge Piercy says, "I started writing poetry regularly and seriously when I was fifteen and my family moved into a house larger by far than we had ever lived in. For the first time, I had a room of my own with a door that closed and some measure of privacy. I was upstairs, with the roomers, while my parents were downstairs" (98).

What are big girls made of?
The construction of a woman: a woman is not made of flesh of bone and sinew belly and breasts, elbows and liver and toe. She is manufactured like a sports sedan. She is retooled, refitted and redesigned every decade.
Cecile had been seduction itself in college. She wriggled through bars like a satin eel, her hips and ass promising, her mouth pursed in the dark red lipstick of desire.
She visited in '68 still wearing skirts tight to the knees, dark red lipstick, while I danced through Manhattan in mini skirt, lipstick pale as apricot milk, hair loose as a horse's mane. Oh dear, I thought in my superiority of the moment, whatever has happened to poor Cecile? She was out of fashion, out of the game, disqualified, disdained, dis- membered from the club of desire.
Look at pictures in French fashion magazines of the 18th century: century of the ultimate lady fantasy wrought of silk and corseting. Paniers bring her hips out three feet each way, while the waist is pinched
