His first play, Strange Fruit , focused on Vivienne Marshal, a woman living alone in Britain with her two sons, Alvin and Errol. Alvin goes to his grandfather's funeral in the Caribbean and returns to England with his experiences back home serving to reinforce the split between him, and his mother and brother. His second major play, Where There Is Darkness , focused on Albert William, who is about to return home to the Caribbean after twenty five years in Britain. In the play he reflects on what Britain has meant to him. In 1984 he wrote a travel book about what it is like, as he said, "to feel both of, and not of, Europe". The European Tribe took him to Morocco, Gibraltar, Spain, the South of France, Venice, Paris, Amsterdam, Ireland and the Soviet Union.

A Brief Biography of Caryl Phillips
David P. Lichtenstein '99 , Brown University, Contributing Editor, Caribbean Web
The Contemporary Authors confirms his rootlessness, listing three homes in three different countries under the would-be simple heading of "addresses". Caryl Phillips's life (and work), as he admits, in some ways has been defined by the water that separates England from the West Indies, North America from Africa. Born in St. Kitts on March 13, 1958, he moved to England after just one year. There he took an honors B.A. at Oxford and began his blossoming writing career. He has since taken up a home in Amherst as well, where he serves as writer in residence. Phillips' talent has been recognized not just in the awards and fellowships he has received, but also in his recent appointment to the post of chief editor of the Faber and Faber Caribbean writers' series. Phillips' writing, like that of many West Indian writers, reflects the dualities inherent in his life. But he approaches it uniquely, playing with multiple perspectives to explore not only the challenges of dealing with such dichotomies of race and heritage in the present, but also to investigate how they were created in the first place. Phillips goes beyond presenting the confused identities of his characters, as he frequently juxtaposes their personal histories (as in Cambridge ) in order to call into question the process by which these stories became what we now know as "history". Further, he draws links between all sorts of dispossessed, marginal groups, such as Jews during the Holocaust or even Victorian women, to make analogies for the West Indian situation. Thus Caryl Phillips' work, while starting in the Caribbean perhaps, in the end encompasses much of the world, a world which he must in some way draw together in order to make his own identity whole.

The Tension Between History and His/Her-stories in Caryl Phillips's Crossing the River
Graciela Moreira Slepoy, Postgraduate Student, Laval University, Canada
This web essay is based upon a paper the author wrote for Professor Neil Bissoondath's "Postcolonial Literature II" [ANG-64699A], Laval University. In Crossing the River , Caryl Phillips celebrates the human experience that Raymond of Naippaul's A Bend in the River utterly neglects. By means of a series of private narratives, the author gives an overview of 250 years of the African diaspora . These local narratives are set within a framework story that gives the novel coherence and the circular quality of African storytelling. The voice of the framework story opens and ends the novel and tells the tale of an African father who sells his children into slavery: "A desperate foolishness. The crops failed. I sold my children" (1). The many local narratives give rise to a multiplicity of narrative instances. Phillips' novel can be defined as a polyphony of voices since different narrators take turns to tell their own private stories and at the end they join in a chorus. Phillips privileges the voices of ex-centric characters, particularly those of the slave children Nash, Martha and Travis through that of Joyce; they comprise a kind of chorus that accounts for the complex experience of the African diaspora. In a personal, intimate and touching way, the author retells the past of this people, characterised by suffering, a sense of rootlessness and the breaking up of families. Phillips avoids creating historical accounts of the past; History serves as a backdrop against which private narratives unfold creating a veiled tension between History and "her/his-stories". To History, Phillips opposes a series of private and personal stories as a way of counteracting this monolithic master narrative that allows no place for the diversity, richness and complexity of human experience.
