James Phelan
By Jim DiEugenio
James Phelan was a nationally known and distributed reporter for over 20 years, from about the mid-50's to the late 70's. He semi-retired in the early 80's and today is fully retired and living in Temecula, California. At the peak years of his career, Phelan wrote for True Time Fortune The Reporter Saturday Evening Post , and New York Times Magazine . Although Phelan liked to refer to himself as a free-lancer, he was a staff writer for the Saturday Evening Post for about seven years in the 1960's. In the seventies, he was writing almost exclusively for New York Times Magazine As anyone with knowledge of the CIA and the media will know, those two publications, as well as the Luce press Phelan contributed to, have been exposed as having ties to the intelligence community. For example, they are prominently mentioned in Carl Bernstein's famous Rolling Stone article entitled "The CIA and the Media." It should also be noted that Saturday Evening Post has had ties to the FBI. For instance, correspondent Harold Martin was used by the Bureau as a friendly conduit for favorable stories to be passed to.

RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Thursday, March 25, 2004 For Buddhist WWII vet, a lifetime as individualist led to stance on pledge By BRAD WONG SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Tom Phelan is an 82-year-old veteran of World War II who salutes the flag at ceremonies in the Eastern Washington city that he calls home. He is also a Buddhist teacher who has signed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court to keep the words "under God" out of the Pledge of Allegiance. "By repeating the pledge over and over, children's minds are being conditioned to accept God as a reality," Phelan said from his Walla Walla home. "I think that's what's happening. The government doesn't have to back any religion." In part, Phelan's opposition to the words stems from a lifetime of independent thinking. He was, after all, the third-grader in a Connecticut parochial school who argued with a nun, then announced to his classmates: "Nobody is going to make a Catholic out of me." Those two words in the pledge also run afoul of Phelan's faith, which developed from years of spiritual searching that began 70 years ago in a letter from a pen pal.

WHEN THE BEST LACK ALL CONVICTION (via Tom Morin):
Borrowed time in the botellón (Michael Carlin, May 2004, New Criterion)
I don’t remember having smelled so much hashish in the streets of Madrid on my last research trip here three years ago. This time it seems that there are few sixteen- to twenty-year-olds on the street who are not either rolling or smoking a joint. I happen to live in one of the better neighborhoods of central Madrid, less than a kilometer from Atocha Station, and about five minutes’ leisurely walk from Lope de Vega’s house, the Royal Academy of History, and the convent in which Cervantes is interred. And all of these sites are perfumed by the less than pious odor of the teens’ oily Moroccan weed, usually in full view of the municipal police. That these stoned adolescents are in many ways the principal actors in the political life of today’s Spain was one of the many truths that emerged in the days following the March 11 catastrophe that, as of this writing, has claimed 192 lives. Of course, not all of Spain’s 1.1 children per fertile woman are smoking dope atop the rubble of the siglo de oro, but such behavior is an integral part of the social matrix within which the youth of Spain interpreted the mass murder of 3/11. as well as many local performance, installation and video artists 368 Congress St., Boston Saturday, November 22, 2003, 8 pm - 1 am $15 in advance, $20 at the door Mobius announces its legendary annual art party, ArtRages , to take place this year on Saturday, November 22, from 8 pm to 1 am, at 368 Congress Street in Boston. This loft party will feature nonstop, wrap-around, bound to astound performance art, music, video, installation by the Mobius Artists Group and guests, and the music of the incomparable Brechtian punk cabaret duo, the Dresden Dolls . There will be a cash bar and fabulous free buffet. Mobius first began hosting ArtRages over 15 years ago. Conceived as a blow-out art party showcasing the work of the Mobius Artists Group and other talented local experimental artists, and with music by local bands, ArtRages has become a feature on the benefit scene, the performance art circuit, and a great place to catch current and up and coming local stars. The party has also been a crucial fund-raiser for Boston's oldest enduring alternative art organization, Mobius. About The Dresden Dolls : Combine the smoky cellars of a Weimar-era cabaret with the rock n' roll fury of Joan Jett, PJ Harvey and The Violent Femmes and you have a remote idea of what to expect when experiencing the Dresden Dolls. Ever since taking up arms in mid-2000, the über-dynamic duo of Amanda Palmer (Piano/Vox) and Brian Viglione (Drums) has been packing clubs in Boston, New York and beyond.

Excerpts from a Diary kept while working
in the District Attorney's office during
the investigation of Kennedy's assassination
June 25, 1967
Matt Herron, photographer for the Black Star agency in NY, worked with Jim Phelan on the Saturday Evening Post article about the New Orleans investigation. I knew Matt quite well before working on this case and saw him this afternoon at his home, 315 Pine St. There were quite a few people present. He told me that he was favorably disposed towards the investigation, and wants to see it succeed. He thinks there was a conspiracy and is a friend of and thinks along the same lines as Vincent Salandria. He volunteered the following information regarding Jim Phelan and Perry Russo. Phelan interviewed Perry Russo in Baton Rouge after the Preliminary Hearing. Also present at this meeting was Russo's room-mate and Matt Herron. Phelan asked Russo twice during this interview if it was true that he, Russo, had not mentioned a meeting between Shaw, Ferrie and Oswald until he came to New Orleans. According to Matt Herron, Russo agreed that he did not mention such a meeting until his arrival in N.O. Herron seemed to remember Russo saying something like "I guess not" in response to Phelan saying was it not true that the meeting didn't come up until he was questioned in New Orleans. Matt Herron also said to me, "I thing you've got the wrong man, Tom." He was referring to Clay Shaw, and the group of people with him seemed to be unanimous in believing that Shaw was innocent.
