A physician turned philosopher turned novelist, Walker Percy (1916-1990) was a towering figure in the world of arts and letters. His body of work includes six novels, three works of nonfiction, and numerous scholarly articles. Percy received critical acclaim throughout his writing career: his first work of fiction, The Moviegoer , earned the National Book Award in 1962, and in 1989, shortly before his death, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities' highest honor, the post of Jefferson Lecturer. I first encountered Percy in Philosophy 101 at the University of Utah, in 1969, when my professor assigned an essay of Percy's on theistic existentialism‹quite a stretch for a former Mormon like me. Ten years later I encountered him again, this time not on paper but in the flesh. I had moved to New Orleans in 1979 and was working as a writer and producer for the CBS affiliate there. By then I had immersed myself in Percy's novels and philosophical work, and was fascinated by the complexity of the man, by his originality and humor. After a while, I learned he was living only twenty-eight miles from the French Quarter, where I lived. He was just on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. As a field producer scavenging for stories, I dug up his phone number (don't ask me how) and decided to give it a shot. I dialed his number:

After a while, I learned he was living only twenty-eight miles from the French Quarter, where I lived. He was just on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain. As a field producer scavenging for stories, I dug up his phone number (don't ask me how) and decided to give it a shot. I dialed his number:
"Hello?"
I cleared my throat. "Dr. Percy?"
"Yes."
"How are you?"
"Who's this?"
"Robyn Leary. You don't know me, but I write and produce for WWL Television in New Orleans. I'd like to schlep a camera crew over and spend a few hours with you at your home or studio in Covington. How about it?"
Unhesitatingly, he refused, adding, "If you knew anything about my work, you'd know I hate the twentieth century, the whole culture, and that I've had enough of interviews."
Click.
We repeated this ritual once a month for at least nine months. No dice. Then, one splendid afternoon in the spring of 1982, I was on my way to the New Orleans Museum of Art for the glitzy premier of the Search for Alexander exhibition. The museum had arranged for a shuttle to bring guests in from wherever they'd had to park. My beau and I were on the shuttle, en route to the museum, when I spotted Walker Percy walking arm-in-arm with his wife, Bunt, beneath a giant oak. "Don't you think you should stop for that older couple?" I blurted out to the driver, my finger pointing at the Percys.

By Gregory Wolfe
According to Walker Percy, one of the preeminent American novelists of the late twentieth century, there are billions of aliens living on planet Earth, creatures who look and talk and act just like you or me. These aliens did not arrive on spaceships, nor do they possess strange, magical powers. The reason for this, Percy held, is that the aliens are us. "Man is the only alien creature, as far as we know, in the entire Cosmos."
A Serious Joke
Percy was joking, of course, but in a serious way. One of the fundamental experiences of human life, he believed, was that of self-consciousness, that awkward sense of somehow not fitting into the universe. In a famous essay, Percy wrote of "The Man on the Train," the typical modern commuter who feels alternately bored and anxious—in the grip of nothingness. Another image he used in his writings was of the "Wednesday afternoon at four o'clock" feeling: a blankness or lostness that often overcomes us.

Walker Percy: Diagnostician of the Modern Malaise CARL E. OLSON I was first introduced to the writing of Walker Percy (1916-1990) several years ago and have been hooked ever since. The Moviegoer was the first book by Percy I read. It was also his first novel, the winner of the National Book Award in 1961. Walker Percy
I knew little about Percy, except that he was Southern and Catholic, and that a good friend of mine believed he was "required reading." As I read The Moviegoer two things immediately impressed me: the beauty of his writing and the spiritual longing which permeates the book. Soon afterward I began reading Signposts in a Strange Land , a collection of his essays, with topics ranging from "Bourbon" to "Novel-Writing in an Apocalyptic Time" to "A 'Cranky Novelist' Reflects on the Church." That was quickly followed by a side-splitting read of Lost In The Cosmos , subtitled "The Last Self-Help Book" and filled with an ingenious mixture of cutting satire, pop culture, and philosophical reflection, all aimed at questions such as: Why is modern man, master of technology and information, such a mystery to himself? And why is he in so much misery most of the time? The Moviegoer , reflects upon this search: It was a happy coincidence that at the same time I was reading Percy, I was also reading G. K. Chesterton's

The Last Gentleman
Anthony Burgess : 99 Best Modern Novels (1934-84) (1966)
Author Info: Walker Percy
One of the more curious concepts you'll ever come across is the idea of Christian existentialism, but this is what Walker Percy is commonly described as having believed in. The form that this odd philosophy seems to have taken is that Man is adrift in the universe, unable to determine the purpose of existence, but should, nonetheless, live a life of Christian virtue. The oddity of this ethos is revealed by the simple question : why ? If life has no purpose, then who cares how we behave toward one another ? Why not get away with whatever you can ? As Percy expressed it, the focus of his writing was ''the dislocation of man in the modern age.'' The form that this concern took in his novels was typically to have a young man of upper class Southern stock sort of flail about for the meaning of life. As a result, his books have a certain sameness, and though he's not widely read enough to really test this theory, I think he may suffer somewhat from the Robert Ludlum effect : whichever one of his books you read first is your favorite. At any rate, though I could probably come up with some plausible reasons, The Last Gentleman is my favorite of his books, and happens to be the first I read.

(2). That reading had an effect on me very similar to Helen Keller's remarkable experience with the water from the fountain, referred to so many times by Percy(3). Percy was suggesting that the unifying element in all those topics that had attracted me so much was to be found in the insufficiency of the scientificist narrative that, permeated with a simplified Darwinism, had dominated the Anglo-American academic scene during the second half of this century with the aim of explaining the most characteristic behaviours of human beings such as language and communication. The cure in Percys judgement ought to be looked for in Charles Peirce and his discovery of the irreducibly triadic nature characteristic of all linguistic behaviour: the remedy to overcome the San Andreas Fault, the gap that divides our culture between natural sciences and humanities, making an integrated understanding of human beings and their activity impossible, was to be found in "the work of a human scientist who, I believe, laid the groundwork for a coherent science of man, and did so a hundred years ago"(5). Scientism, held by the Vienna Circle and its positivist heirs, became the dominant culture from the 1950s onwards, converting itself into materialist realism which sought to explain everything

Walker Percy
Patrick Samway, SJ has a written a new biography of the great Catholic Novelist, Walker Percy . Percy was a great writer whose work tells a good story, but he also had the goal of "refashioning the epistomological basis of our culture". He believed that there was something more than merely the mind and the body and set out to illustrate this. Mr. Percy is not a hero of the anti-intellectual. The person who would pick up one of his novels should be ready to think. (Try it; it's good exercize.) Walker Percy was orphaned at an early age and was raised by a curmudgeonly plantation owner in the Mississippi Delta. William Percy was a reknown author in his own right. His most famous work depicts his life and is called Lanterns on the Levee: Recollections of a Planter's Son . William Percy was an eccentric who was not shy about making his views known. He once said that a gentleman only needed to study two works to guide him in this life. One was the Bible and the other was the Meditations of the stoic philosopher and Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Lanterns on the Levee is a grand, last justification for the plantation life that was passing from the American scene in the 1930's and is now lost to us.
