I will add more information to my page in the future. BACKGROUND
'It needs a compelling reason for a man to turm his back on a successful career in business and abandon forever all the trappings that go with it.'* But that is exactly what Alan did in 1972. He gave up his job and retreated to a quiet country cottage. Ho could resist the pull of art no longer. Born in East Kent, Alan spent his early years in London and the countryside around the Kent-Sussex border. Alan paints mostly in watercolour and uses very little bodycolour or gouache in his paintings. His commisions range from the National Trust, the Church of England, Universities, and large public companies. Alan has also illustrated books including 'Country Railwayman' and 'A Country Town'.

Walker Percy
A highly respected American author, Walker Percy was renowned for fiction that at once reflected his thoughtful, intellectual positions coupled with a deep moral sense. Born May 28, 1916, in Birmingham, Alabama, but as a teenager, following his father's suicide and two years later, the death of his mother in an automobile accident, he and his two brothers went to live with their cousin William Alexander Percy in Greenville, Mississippi. There, Walker was intellectually stimulated by his cousin, himself a writer, and their scholarly guests. He also made a lifelong friendship with Shelby Foote More to come!

Walker Percy: A Biography
By Christina Collins (SHS) Walker Alexander Percy, a writer who was raised in Greenville, Mississippi, was born to Leroy and Martha Percy on May 28, 1916, in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents later had two other sons, Phin and Roy. Young Walker had a hard life. At the tender age of thirteen, his father, a successful lawyer in Birmingham, took his own life in the attic of their home with a shotgun. Just two years later, his mother drove her car off a country bridge. Some say it was accidental; but young Walker, at the age of fifteen, always suspected she, too, had taken her own life (Benfey 2) . The three orphaned boys were sent to live with their father's cousin, William Alexander Percy, a writer himself, in

First Things 32 (April 1993): 38-44. In Washington, where he was to give the eighteenth Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities on May 3, 1989, Walker Percy also gave an interview to Scott Walter for Crisis . This is almost exactly a year before his death, and both the interview and his lecture, "The Fateful Rift: The San Andreas Fault in the Modern Mind," reflect not only his journey up to that point, but a continuing concern for the meaning of the journey and to a degree a continuing ambiguity in his understanding of intellectual experience. He still shares with Binx Bolling an amused wonder in the presence of experience, still somewhat divided of mind as to the dependability of immediate experience, a condition suited to the novelist. Perhaps the point can best be presented by noticing the divided sense in which Percy uses the term liberal in his interview. A problem arises in his discomfort with the liberal mind, with which he nevertheless shares causes. "I agree with them on almost everything: their political and social causes, and the ACLU, God knows, the right to freedom of speech, to help the homeless, the poor, the minorities." But the liberal position on abortion and euthanasia is "a mystery, a bafflement to me." Their "hearts are in the right place," but "they cannot see the paradox of being in favor of these good things and yet not batting an eyelash when it comes to destroying unborn life."

Walker Percy (1916-1990)
A brief biography with an emphasis on his interest in language
At the time of this biography's creation, Walker Percy's writings and ideas are increasingly becoming more esteemed and appreciated, especially since his death in 1990. Known primarily as a "philosophical novelist," Percy has to the credit of his name some six novels, in addition to three works of non-fiction. The last of these three non-fiction works, Signposts in a Strangeland (1991), is a posthumous publication of Percy's uncollected essays, and as a whole, it offers the broadest formal selection of Percy's ideas about fiction, science, language, and his image of himself as a thinker. Additionally, at this time, some thirty-odd books are available that treat him as a literary figure, with more new books on the way yearly. Originally trained as an MD with interests in pathology and psychiatry, Percy contracted tuberculosis in 1942 at the age of twenty-six. Confined to the sanitarium for several following years, Percy began delving into literary and philosophical readings during his slow recovery. Especially taking an interest in Existentialism, with its concern for the "alienation" of the modern individual, Percy made this period of intense, sustained reading the foundation for all his writings to follow. Indeed, nearly all of his novels are concerned with individuals who are on a "search" for a more "authentic" existence beyond the limited meaning given their lives by a techno-scientific culture. His first novel

A Mississippi Delta planter, lawyer, poet, man of letters, and gentleman from Greenville, William Alexander Percy is best known for his autobiography, Lanterns on the Levee Lanterns on the Levee looks upon the drastic social changes of that period with a sense of foreboding, upholding agrarian sensibility and the values of kindness, moral integrity, and friendship instead of what Percy perceived as the prevailing trends of declining moral values and technological progress. He served as guardian to his cousin Walker Percy after the death of Walker's parents. He died on January 21, 1942.

    Shelby Foote and Walker Percy
The Correspondence of Shelby Foote and Walker Percy
Edited by Jay Tolson Washington Times
In the late 1940s, Walker Percy and Shelby Foote, friends since their teenage years in Greenville, Mississippi, began a correspondence that would last until Percy's death in 1990. Walker Percy, the highly regarded author of The Moviegoer , wrote six novels, two volumes of philosophical writings, and numerous essays. Shelby Foote met with early success as a novelist, but his reputation today rests more upon his massive three-volume narrative history of the Civil War, and his role as commentator in Ken Burns's documentary The Civil War
The correspondence between Percy and Foote traces their lives from the beginning of their respective careers, when they were grappling fiercely and openly with their ambitions, artistic doubts, and personal problems. Although they discuss such serious matters as the death of Foote's mother and Percy's battle with cancer, their letters are full of sly humor and good-natured ribbing. Jay Tolson has selected, edited, and annotated the letters of these two remarkable writers to shed light on their relationship and their literary careers.
    Washington Post
Jay Tolson is the author of the biography Pilgrim in the Ruins: A Life of Walker Percy and is the editor of the Wilson Quarterly . He lives in Arlington, Virginia.

Genre Novel (242 pp.) Keywords Communication Family Relationships Freedom Human Worth ... Suffering Summary John Binkerson ("Binx") Bolling is a young man from a "good" New Orleans family who for some years has devoted himself to money, sex, and watching movies. During Mardi Gras, when the novel begins, he wakes up to the vague feeling that something more is needed in his life. We meet his Aunt Emily, a Southern noblewoman, and his cousin Kate, who is said to be somewhat unstable since her fiance's death some years earlier; she is currently engaged to the virtually invisible Walter. The action also takes us to the bayous, where Binx visits his remarried (Catholic) mother and her family, including his sickly adolescent stepbrother, Lonnie. (Binx's father died in World War II; Binx, himself, has survived service in the Korean Conflict.) Subsequently, Binx takes a trip to Chicago with Kate; on the train she offers to have sex with him, but he refuses. Binx and Kate must then respond to Lonnie's unexpected death. In the end Binx decides to give up his business as a bond dealer and go to medical school, and he and Kate decide to marry.
