Octavio Paz was born in 1914 in Mexico City. On his father's side, his grandfather was a prominent liberal intellectual and one of the first authors to write a novel with an expressly Indian theme. Thanks to his grandfather's extensive library, Paz came into early contact with literature. Like his grandfather, his father was also an active political journalist who, together with other progressive intellectuals, joined the agrarian uprisings led by Emiliano Zapata. Paz began to write at an early age, and in 1937, he travelled to Valencia, Spain, to participate in the Second International Congress of Anti-Fascist Writers. Upon his return to Mexico in 1938, he became one of the founders of the journal, Taller (Workshop), a magazine which signaled the emergence of a new generation of writers in Mexico as well as a new literary sensibility. In 1943, he travelled to the USA on a Guggenheim Fellowship where he became immersed in Anglo-American Modernist poetry; two years later, he entered the Mexican diplomatic service and was sent to France, where he wrote his fundamental study of Mexican identity, The Labyrinth of Solitude

OCTAVIO PAZ: NOBEL WINNER AND NOBLE MAN 1998 witnessed the passing of such diverse figures as Frank Sinatra, legendary boxer Archie Moore, two-term Florida Governor Lawton Chiles, cowboy star and entrepreneur Gene Autry, and Clayton ("Peg Leg") Bates, the one-legged tap dancer who was so skilled with a wooden limb that he forged a career (including twenty appearances on the Ed Sullivan show) that lasted from the 1920s to 1989. It also witnessed the passing of Octavio Paz, the protean Mexican writer who won the Nobel Prize in 1990 and who was as noted for ideological integrity as for literary talent. In 1968, after the student massacre at Tlatelolco, Paz angrily resigned as Mexican ambassador to India. Paz was born in Mexico City on March 31, 1914. His father, Octavio Paz Solórzano, was a lawyer who supported Zapata during the Mexican Revolution and made notable contributions in the area of agrarian reform. His grandfather, Ireneo Paz, was a journalist during Porfirian times who rallied to the standard of Madero. Intellectually precocious and having access to his grandfather's extensive library, Paz was a voracious reader his entire life. After studies in Mexico, he received a scholarship to study Hispanic poetry in the United States.

Octavio Paz Paz nació en la ciudad de México el 31 de marzo de 1914. Hijo de una española y de un abogado mexicano con sangre india, desde su juventud sintió su personalidad como un crisol de culturas. Tras cursar sus estudios universitarios, decidió dedicarse a la literatura y en 1931 fundó la revista Barandal. Dos años después publicó su primer poemario, Luna silvestre. En 1937 Paz marchó a España para apoyar al gobierno republicano en la guerra civil y se unió a la alianza de escritores antifascistas. Tras un viaje a París, donde trató a los surrealistas, regresó a México e inició una intensa actividad cultural traducida en la fundación de las revistas Taller (1939) y El Hijo Pródigo (1943) y en la creación de grupos artísticos y teatrales. Ello no le impidió desarrollar su obra poética, con títulos como A la orilla del mundo (1942), los poemas en prosa de ¿Águila o sol? (1951) y La estación violenta (1958), mundo deslumbrante y telúrico, identificado con el espíritu del autor y expresado en un lenguaje de gran violencia expresiva, que debía tanto al surrealismo como a la mitología azteca. Éstas y otras obras fueron recogidas en 1960 en Libertad bajo palabra y, junto con el ensayo El laberinto de la soledad (1950), conformaron una reflexión sobre las raíces espirituales mexicanas. Tras publicar Salamandra (1962), uno de sus textos más surrealistas, Paz residió entre 1962 y 1968 en la India como embajador de su país. Durante este período experimentó un gran interés por el pensamiento oriental y las relaciones entre palabra e imagen. Fruto de ello fueron Blanco (1967) y Topoemas (1968) -definidos por el autor como "poesía espacial, por oposición a la poesía discursiva"-, y los poemas incluidos en Ladera este (1972). A la misma etapa pertenece el ensayo Marcel Duchamp o el castillo de la pureza (1968).

FURTHER COMMENTS from the book Nineteen Ways of Looking at Wang Wei by Octavio Paz Eliot Weiberger's commentary on the successive translations of Wang Wei's little poem illustrates, with succinct clarity, not only the evolution of the art of translation in the modern period but at the same time the changes in poetic sensibility. His examples come from English and, to a lesser extent, from French; I am sure that a parallel exploration of German or Italian would produce similar results. Weinberger cites only one Spanish version, my own. There may be another, and perhaps one or two in Portuguese. One must admit, however, that Spanish and Portuguese do not enjoy a corpus of Chinese translation similar in importance or quality to that of other languages. This is regrettable: the modern era has discovered other classicisms besides that of Greco-Roman culture, and one of them is China and Japan. Weinberger's commentary led me back to my own translation. Probably the greatest difficulty for any translator of a Chinese poem is the unique temper of the language and of the writing. The majority of the poems in the Shi jing , the most ancient collection of Chinese poetry, are written in lines of four syllables that are four characters/words.
