82. Tim Parks' Destiny
Well, tim parks novel Destiny is a good start. It is an exhilarating experience of vertigo. A wonderful book. tim parks has his own website. Back to Reviews.

index essays reviews Before, during and ever after I am attracted to stories of the aftermath. At the end of adventure movies I want to know, for instance, what happened after the astronauts make it back to Earth, or the killer is caught, or the girl is finally got. I find the peace at the end of, say, Event Horizon , deeply frustrating. The credits run and immediately I feel the need to inhabit the silence and apparent serenity of the surviving characters; even in a poor film. Instinctively, I ask: what are the characters thinking now? How will the events affect the rest of their lives? How will they come to terms with what has happened? How will they tell the story to their friends? Despite the insistence of these questions - does anybody else ask them? - we don't seem to want to know the answers. I mean, we never see films about them. We want only action. Such indifference suggests a deep-seated pathological fear at the heart of popular culture. It's not like we are all Odysseus, shedding experience like some fancy-dress outfit. Experience makes us who we are. We are stuck with responses, memories and responses to memories. I suppose we watch films like Event Horizon to displace them for a while.

We've tried to cover the most important ones, but there's a limit to what two guys with other things to do (believe it or not!) can accomplish. Here we inventory a few 60's artists whose work we know mostly from one or two records, usually good ones. Most of them deserve more extensive coverage - and we're working on it. Short takes on 70's 80's 90's and later acts are on separate pages, and if you can't find someone you saw on this page earlier, like the Allman Brothers David Bowie Tim Buckley Ray Charles ... Various Artists, A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector
I expected to come out against the canonization of this girl group sock hop disc as the ultimate Christmas album; I figured I'd say, "Almost no original material, and Spector uses the same tricks on every track." But you know what? It's extraordinarily well done from start to finish: each song has the fresh delivery and easy pride of a new composition, and though Spector does rely heavily on echo, stacks of pianos, guitars, horns and strings (his famous Wall Of Sound) and an occasionally overprecise feel, there's a great deal of variety in the arrangements. If Brahma is a more endearing creator than Jehovah it is because he wasn't pleased with what he had made. He found the world dull and dusty. Death was the answer, suggested Siva. Living forever, people were bored. A time-limit would galvanize, give dignity. But in that case some way of replacing the population would have to be found. Brahma brought together a few trusted fellows and explained what was required. The pleasure took them by surprise. What was that for? To put a fresh shine on the world, they were told. Otherwise it might get dusty again... I'm always taken aback when people talk about the eroticism of food and drink, of sunbathing and massage. This is mere sensuality. Or avoiding the issue. No experience even remotely compares with true eros, with long and lavish love-making. It is perfectly understandable that people should imagine its having been tacked on to creation afterwards, so extravagant is the pleasure it brings, so far beyond what is necessary. Never does the world seem so freshly painted, so brightly enamelled, so new, for heaven's sake, as after the best sex. But, alas, depending on where you're up to in life, it may be full of new complications too. A lesser authority than Brahma's would have issued a health-warning. Over billiards and beer a friend is explaining why he is leaving his wife and two children. He's playing with unusual speed and precision. His eyes are brighter than the beer could account for. 'And the girl is twenty-three,' he explains. French. So intelligent. 'Intelligently pert breasts?' I enquire, 'Perceptively warm thighs?' He laughs. He is deliriously proud, confused, unhappy. 'I feel I was never really in love with my wife,' he says.

A special House of Commons Motion condemning new regulations, which could hamper outdoor activities in the Lake District, has been signed by south Cumbria MP Tim Collins. The Directive relates to working at height and has been designed to protect workers particularly in the construction industry. It is clearly absurd to apply these provisions to to adventure activities like climbing and mountaineering. Commenting, Mr Collins said: "I am no friend of Directives from the European Union at the best of times, but this is one of those cases where our own officials are turning something quite reasonable into something ridiculous. "I've received dozens of letters from climbers and outdoor pursuits instructors from across south Cumbria calling for these barmy regulations to changed. I hope this special House of Commons Motion will make HSE officials see sense." ENDS Editor's Notes Notes to Editors Mr Collins has signed the following House of Commons Early Day Motion: That this House is surprised and concerned at the attitude of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in respect of EU Directive 2001/45/EC laying down safety rules for working with ladders and ropes; notes the sensible approach of other EU countries, which realise that the Directive was never intended to cover outdoor adventurous activities such as rock-climbing, caving and mountaineering, let alone high-wire circus acts; deplores the failure thus far to rule such activities as being outside the scope of the proposed regulations; and accordingly calls on the HSE to abandon such gold-plating of sensible suggestions, which reduces them to absurdity.

With a little help
I'm interested in reading suggestions for thoughtful right-leaning Australian blogs that are not already on my blogroll. All suggestions greatly appreciated. UPDATE : So far I've a recommedation for two professional economists, a number of endorsements for Wickstein , and mention of four other sites. Of those latter four, the people mentioning them have said they didn't think they really fulfilled my "thoughtful" criteria, though there was some dissent about EvilPundit On the economic blogs, I'm happy to see them listed, and other blogs by professionals, but I guess I'm really more interested at this stage in your more general, amateur blogs. So is that it? No more thoughtful Australian rightwing bloggers to recommend? Just Wickstein Comments (14) TrackBack (0) 02:11 PM

Big
The scariest thing I've read about Australian politics lately is an assessment that showed up in the free Crikey newsletter: Latham's small target strategy Labor's performance in Parliament this week is starting to look like Kim Beazley circa 2001. Memo to Mark: that was a loser, and they don't hand out government to the party that wins the pop polls - only the one with the majority of seats in the Lower House. Which happens to be the Coalition. And the quiet, unfussed way Latham is going about Question Time indicates he thinks he's only got to avoid scaring the horses, and he's in.
