PARKER'S BOOKS REVEALED This Site visited Times Since Dec. 1, 2000 FOREWORD: The purpose of this site is to help you find your way among the over forty excellent books Bob Parker has published by trying to give you an idea of what the individual books are about so that you might find some enjoyable reading. I have slipped a bit of my personal opinions in some of the synopsese and the descriptions of characters, and if you find that you disagree with some of them, so be it. Although Parker writes primarily about detectives and crimes, I incline to favor those that have a little romance thrown in and I gather that I am with the majority of readers. Titles are hard to remember, so the short synopses are intended to help you decide whether you have read a particular title or not. This site was started with just the Spenser novels, but after putting the last version of my Spenser site on line, which covered the 26 novels that had been published then, I decided to expand my site to include all the books Parker had published. Many people consider Bob Parker the best present day writer of detective/crime fiction. Personally, I go farther, I think he's among the best present day writers, period. I don't know of any writer who makes their characters more real, more alive, and more interesting.. He has specialized in novels of the detective/crime genre because that field interests him and has a good market. Backpacking in the Northern Sierra's I love to backpack the mountains. I love to sleep outside and listen to all the sounds nature provides. It is absolutely awesome. In Mid July of the Summer of 2003, I spent three days in the Desolation Wilderness, as my summer solitude for the year. It was absolutley awesome! I parked at the trailhead at Lily Lake, after a half hour drive along Fallen Leaf Lake. The drive around Fallen Leaf lake is slow going because of the heavy traffic and a single lane for much of the trip.The Sierras this year were mostly clear of snow, except for the passes. They were slippery. I spent the first night at Grass Lake and at Suzie Lake the second night. The Desolation Wilderness area is just South West of Lake Tahoe. I spent some time at Lake Aloha, almost slept here but instead pressed on to home that night. Here is a picture of Lake Aloha , in the Desolation Wilderness, July 2003. I was looking South West, close to the shoreline, just west of the trail intersection. If you look at the red cross on the TopoZone link you can get an idea of where the picture was taken. They are all written in Fortran, come with extensive documentation. Several packages are briefly described below, with links to online documentation. On this page you will find information about plotxy (in the next section), and also color magmap psd cross , and contour Plotxy The most venerable program is plotxy, originally written by Loren Shure and myself in the 1980s. This package allows the user, either interactively at the terminal, or though scripts, to create simple graphs in the x-y plane. These days there are dozens of such programs, but plotxy gives the user complete of control of many aspects of the graph (eg, picture size, text font, line weight, math and Greek symbols, color palette specification) often absent from the other systems. For example, matlab effortlessly generates simple graphics during the development stages of a project, but production of publication-quality figures is much more troublesome. Control of figure and text size, arrangement on the page, annotation is handled in matlab by a confusing combination of pull-down menus, and function calls, some requiring handle graphics, others not, and documentation is diffuse. In comparison, plotxy offers full control within a uniform framework, well documented in one place. The example above is a figure drawn with plotxy ( mapped to jpeg and somewhat degraded) from a recent paper of mine shows some features that would require considerable effort to reproduce in matlab.
