His novel featuring the wise-cracking, street-smart Boston private-eye Spenser have earned him a devoted following and reams of critical acclaim, typified by R.W.B. Lewis' comment, "We are witnessing one of the great series in the history of the American detective story" ( The New York Times Book Review ). Robert Parkers most recent bestsellers include his SPENSER novel, BACK STORY and DEATH IN PARADISE, his third JESSE STONE novel. His first western, GUNMANS RHAPSODY was published in 2001. His previous Spenser novel, HUGGER MUGGER, was a national bestseller in the Spring of 2000. He also had a national bestseller with PERISH TWICE, his second Sunny Randall novel. Parker's other works include the classic POODLE SPRINGS, a novel completed from an unfinished manuscript begun by the late Raymond Chandler, and PERCHANCE TO DREAM, the sequel to Raymond Chandler's THE BIG SLEEP. Ironically, Parker wrote about Chandler in a chapter of his doctoral thesis about the evolution of the American Hero, beginning with the colonial period and ending with the twentieth century mystery writers. As fate would have it, Parker has now become one of the best of them: "Robert B. Parker has taken his place besides Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross MacDonald" (

Robert B. Parker By William Marling The "Spenser" detective series, wrote Anne Ponder in Armchair Detective , is "the best American hardboiled detective fiction since Ross Macdonald and Raymond Chandler." High praise, but Robert B. Parker was a student of the genre before he became a master. Like Macdonald, Parker holds a doctorate in English and spent many years teaching in the university; his fiction is similarly informed by literary allusion and a concern for social justice. Parker's first novel, The Godwulf Manuscript (1974), featured an ex-boxer, ex-cop hero, fired for insubordination, vintage Hammett/Chandler. Parker added an element of sensitivity, however, and gave Spenser a "perfect woman" for his girlfriend, so that he does not chase women. Parker followed with four more novels and resigned his professorship in 1979 to write full time. By this time he had developed "some of the snappiest and sauciest dialogue in the business," wrote Jean M. White in Washington Post Book World He also anticipated the feminist surge by detailing Spenser's monogamous relationship with psychologist Susan Silverman, which deepens from novel to novel. Indeed Parker was praised not only by feminists for his strong female figures, but by lesbians for

Robert B. Parker Robert B. Parker is one of contemporary fiction's most popular and most respected detective novelists. Best known for his portrayal of the tough but erudite private investigator Spenser, Parker has written over twenty-five novels over the course of his writing career, beginning with 1973's The Godwulf Manuscript . That novel introduced Spenser, who would be featured in over a dozen more novels, including God Save the Child Mortal Stakes Promised Land (1976) and Sudden Mischief Parker worked in advertising before earning his Ph.D. in English and American literature with a dissertation on Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and John D. MacDonald. He taught for a time at Northeastern University before launching his career as an author, a career that met with success from the very first submission. Parker's acclaim and his deep background in classic detective literature helped earn him the somewhat unusual commission of completing a Philip Marlowe novel that the great Chandler had left unfinished. The result, the novel Poodle Springs , was adapted into a film by HBO and starred James Caan as the famous detective. Parker also wrote a sequel to Chandler's classic

The most popular modern detective series. Parker seems to have skipped a generation in his influences; Spenser is drawn not so much from Ross Macdonald and other detectives of the late 50s and 60s as from Raymond Chandler's Marlowe. Spenser even sports a poet's name. He's a walking contradiction: ex-boxer, gourmet cook, reader of poetry, kicker of ass. Parker also introduced a staple of later private eyes: the dirty-deed-doing sidekick, Hawk, memorably portrayed by Avery Brooks in the television series (my favorite line: "Ma'am, I am carrying a large, loaded, concealed weapon."). Spenser's first six books or so did to the quiet, introspective P.I. novels of the early 70s what Jaws and Star Wars did to quiet, introspective early 70s movies: blew the doors off with a bigger, bolder canvas, and spawned many imitations. Parker also helped the genre shed its trenchcoat-and-fedora fixation and updated it by writing about contemporary people and issues. The boom in private eye writing in the 80s can be traced directly to Parker and Spenser, and while the series isn't as fresh as when it first appeared, but the older books have aged well, especially the classic God Save The Child Reviews

Parker introduced his wisecracking and literate hero in The Godwulf Manuscript in 1973. Spenser has dominated the scene of traditional private detectives ever since, and although he has become older during the series, he is still the toughest and bravest of them all. "I walked back across the park and crossed Fifth Avenue and turned uptown. There was a plate glass window on the Hotel Pierre and I checked my reflection as I went by. I was wearing a leather jacket and a blue-toned Allen Solly tattersall shirt and jeans, and Nike running shoes with a charcoal swoosh. I paused and turned the collar up on my leather jacket. Perfect. Did the traffic slow on of Fifth Avenue to look at me? Maybe." (from Taming a Sea-Horse Robert B. Parker was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. "Nobody does it better than Parker"
The Sunday Times Biography Born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1932, Robert Brown Parker attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, graduating with a degree in English in 1954. Following college he enlisted and served a period of time in the infantry in Korea. In 1956 he studied for an M.A. in English at Boston University, then took a variety of white-collar jobs, returning to teach and work on a Ph.D. in 1962, at the urging of his wife, Joan, his childhood sweetheart who he had married in 1956. He went on to complete his thesis, on the American hero from the Revolution to the modern mystery, covering the novels of Chandler, Dashiell Hammett and Ross Macdonald, and to obtain a teaching post at Boston's Northeastern University, which gave him time to write, resulting in the first Spenser novel, the Godwulf Manuscript, in 1973. In 1978 he retired from the University, and has gone on to write many more novels featuring Spenser and his sidekick Hawk.
