A Mash Note to Crockett Johnson
    Dorothy Parker
This letter was first published in PM on October 3, 1943, when Barnaby the first collection of the comic appeared. It was reprinted as the introduction to Barnaby #4 : Mr. O'Malley Goes for the Gold (Ballantine Books, 1986), and is often quoted. I have reproduced it in its entirety because, although it is very frequently cited, copies of it are hard to find. To my knowledge, the complete text of the letter can be found only in Barnaby #4 (out of print) and on page 16 of PM , October 3, 1943 (on microfilm). I cannot write a review of Crockett Johnson's book of Barnaby. I have tried and tried, but it never comes out a book review. It is always a valentine for Mr. Johnson. That is, I had no delight and no enjoyment and no love until Barnaby came. I suppose you must do it this way; I suppose you must file Barnaby under comic strips, because his biography runs along in strip form in a newspaper. I bow to convention in the matter. But, privately, if the adventures of Barnaby constitute a comic strip, then so do those of Huckleberry Finn. I think, and I am trying to talk calmly, that Barnaby and his friends and oppressors are the most important additions to American arts and letters in Lord knows how many years. I know that they are the most important additions to my heart. I love Barnaby, I love little Jane, I love Gus, the Ghost, I hate and admire and envy Mr. O'Malley, above all I love Gorgon, the dog.

Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) once considered the wittiest woman in America, was born Dorothy Rothschild in West End, New Jersey. While a student at the Blessed Sacrament Convent School in New York City, Dorothy was expelled for insisting that the Immaculate Conception was a form of "spontaneous combustion." She went on to Miss Dana's School in Morristown, New Jersey, where she excelled at translating and imitating Latin poets whose specialty was the epigram. After her graduation in 1911 she lived in a Manhattan boardinghouse and wrote poetry, supporting herself by working in a bookstore and playing the piano at night in a dancing school. Four years later she published her first verse in

College Drinking Days Of all the college pastimes
    I discovered and indulged in,
    Gossip, study, romance,
I most loved drinking gin. I found that when I cut it
With just a smidgen of vermouth
    It made others more appealing,
My wit that much more couth. Then early in my sophomore year
    I happened to discover
That Bloody Marys in the morning Helped me to recover. It was then I stopped because I saw where things were leading. The deeper that you cut, you know, The harder stops the bleeding. A Routine Check-Up She was going through her questions, The ones they always ask. Is it information that they want, Or to put you to the task? It came out that my friends and I Often went out drinking. “Twice or thrice” a week, I said, Without really thinking. “Even at your age?” she said, “Just for drinks and song?” “Indeed we do,” I said to her, “Want to come along?” Remembering Newt Gingrich He only appeared well-informed When you ignored what he said. 97. A Telephone Call--Dorothy Parker
A Telephone Call. BY dorothy parker. PLEASE, God, let him telephone me now. Dear God, let him call me now. I won t ask anything else
    http://mbhs.bergtraum.k12.ny.us/cybereng/shorts/teleycal.html
    A Telephone Call
    BY DOROTHY PARKER
PLEASE, God, let him telephone me now. Dear God, let him call me now. I won't ask anything else of You, truly I won't. It isn't very much to ask. It would be so little to You, God, such a little, little thing. Only let him telephone now. Please, God. Please, please, please.
If I didn't think about it, maybe the telephone might ring. Sometimes it does that. If I could think of something else. If I could think of something else. Knobby if I counted five hundred by fives, it might ring by that time. I'll count slowly. I won't cheat. And if it rings when I get to three hundred, I won't stop; I won't answer it until I get to five hundred. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, thirty-five, forty, forty-five, fifty.... Oh, please ring. Please.
"I'll call you at five, darling." "Good-by, darling.,' He was busy, and he was in a hurry, and there were people around him, but he called me "darling" twice. That's mine, that's mine. I have that, even if I never see him again. Oh, but that's so little. That isn't enough. Nothing's enough, if I never see him again. Please let me see him again, God. Please, I want him so much. I want him so much. I'll be good, God. I will try to be better, I will, If you will let me see him again. If You will let him telephone me. Oh, let him telephone me now.
Ah, don't let my prayer seem too little to You, God. You sit up there, so white and old, with all the angels about You and the stars slipping by. And I come to You with a prayer about a telephone call. Ah, don't laugh, God. You see, You don't know how it feels. You're so safe, there on Your throne, with the blue swirling under You. Nothing can touch You; no one can twist Your heart in his hands. This is suffering, God, this is bad, bad suffering. Won't You help me? For Your Son's sake, help me. You said You would do whatever was asked of You in His name. Oh, God, in the name of Thine only beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, let him telephone me now.
