Dorothy Rothschild Parker 1893-1967
Celebrated Conversationalist renowned for her literary contributions and founder/member of the "Algonquin Round Table"
Dorothy Parker Rothschild represented one of the most accomplished feminist and successful literary writers in women’s history. Existing from 1893-1967, she became known as one of the most brilliant writers from the early 1900s. Born in West End, New Jersey, and attaining her success from New York, she became one of the most brilliant writers that revolutionized American thinking then and after. Dorothy Parker lived a full and prosperous life, even though she did not have a happy childhood. Growing up, having bad relationships with her father and stepmother, she never had the privilege of growing up with a mother. Her mother died on July 20, 1897, when Dorothy was only four years of age, and her father died shortly after on December 28, 1913. Right before the death of her father was the passing away of her "brother Henry, who died on the passage home from a vacation with his wife Lissie aboard a first class steamship the Titanic, which sank in 1912." (Click here to see the source for this quote.) As a sad woman, stung with depression and alcoholism her entire adult life, she had a successful and productive life. In 1916, at the age of 23, she joined the editorial staff of

www.findadeath.com Dorothy Parker Story donated by Kevin Fitzpatrick If you think your best friend will look out for your best interests after you check out of this life, then listen to the tale of what happened to Dorothy Parker's ashes after she died in 1967. The celebrity wit, writer and member of the Algonquin Round Table had a deep affection for death-inspired imagery. She was asked once to compose her epitaph: "Excuse My Dust," she wrote. Later, she penned another: "This Is On Me." Dorothy Parker was born in West End, N.J., on August 22, 1893 and lived in New York, Los Angeles and Bucks County, Pa. A founding member of the New Yorker, Mrs. Parker was once one of the most-quoted people in America. She wrote poetry, short stories, criticism and screenplays. Her nine books of poetry and short stories have never gone out of print. She was nominated for the screenplay for the original "A Star Is Born" in 1937, and collected literary prizes along with subpoenas to testify to the House Un-American Committee as a suspected Red. Her quips fill up books. In a word game, she was challenged to use "horticulture" in a sentence. Her reply: "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think." Both her husbands died with drugs in their blood. On June 14, 1963, when her second husband, screenwriter Alan Campbell, died of a barbiturate overdose at their house at 8983 Norma Place in West Hollywood (same block as Carolyn Jones), a neighbor went to console Mrs. Parker. The friend asked if there was anything she could do. "Get me a new husband," was Mrs. Parker's reply. The friend was shocked and told Mrs. Parker it was the most tasteless thing she had ever heard. "Then run down to the corner and get me a ham and cheese on rye. And tell them to hold the mayo."

A Very Short Song
Once, when I was young and true, Someone left me sad- Broke my brittle heart in two; And that is very bad. Love is for unlucky folk, Love is but a curse. Once there was a heart I broke; And that, I think, is worse.
A Well-Worn Story
In April, in April, My one love came along, And I ran the slope of my high hill To follow a thread of song. His eyes were hard as porphyry With looking on cruel lands; His voice went slipping over me Like terrible silver hands. Together we trod the secret lane And walked the muttering town. I wore my heart like a wet, red stain On the breast of a velvet gown. In April, in April, My love went whistling by, And I stumbled here to my high hill Along the way of a lie. Now what should I do in this place But sit and count the chimes, And splash cold water on my face And spoil a page with rhymes?

Dorothy Parker - (1893-1967) The famed Algonquin Hotel near Times Square where Dorothy Parker and other famous writers held court at the famed round table New York City By Eva Kuhn and Katie May Schwenk
Village Community School, New York City I. Biography Dorothy Parker, one of the most unique women writers to ever grace America, was born in West Hampton, New Jersey in 1893. When she was older she moved to New York City where she established her writing career. She lived at 57 West 68 th Street. Her given name was Dorothy Rothschild. Dorothy was petite and doe-eyed, but her fragile demeanor masked her sharp wit. Even early on she was known for her biting satire and witty humor. She wrote poetry, short stories, columns for magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and Hollywood screen plays. Growing up, Parker's life was filled with pain. In 1897 her mother died. Her father took a new wife, but regretfully her stepmother died several years later. Dorothy was not fond of her stepmother, but the two deaths in such a short period of time affected her and she was prone to melancholy moods. Parker's education included Miss Diana's School in Morristown, New Jersey and the Blessed Sacrament Convent in New York City. She was not in favor of programmed schooling and preferred to teach herself when she thought it was necessary.

F o u r be the things I'd been b e t t e r without: Love , curiosity, f r e c k l e s and doubt." ~ Dorothy Parker Gifted satirist Dorothy Rothschild Parker (1893-1967), best remembered for her uncanny wit, was probably kidding... about the freckles. "I don't care what is written about me so long as it isn't true , she confessed with typical dry humor. "There's a helluva distance between wisecracking and wit. Wit has truth in it; wisecracking is simply calisthenics with words A homegrown Oscar Wilde with razor-sharp humor , Parker was born to a wealthy Jewish merchant in New Jersey. Nearsighted, she is the one who wrote, "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses." As the toast of New York , the versatile Parker wrote book reviews for The New Yorker . She created poetry and Hollywood screenplays. "I'd like to have money . And I'd like to be a good writer . These two can come together, and I hope they will, but if that's too adorable, I'd rather have money," she said. Parker gave outspoken voice to the time she lived , where women had just earned the vote, journalism was almost exclusively a male occupation, and

Dorothy Parker
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Dorothy Parker (born Dorothy Rothschild) ( August 22 June 7 ), born in West End New Jersey , was a writer and poet . Having sold some poems to Vogue magazine in she worked there for a short while captioning fashion photographs, before beginning her career writing theatre criticism for Vanity Fair (initially as a stand-in for the vacationing Robert Benchley ), during which time she met and married Edwin Pond Parker II, whom she later divorced. She also had a torrid affair with the publisher Seward Collins . When Harold Ross founded The New Yorker she and Benchley joined its staff. Parker contributed many of her greatest short stories to the magazine, before pursuing a career as an independent writer of poems and short stories and making a name for herself as an acerbic wit. She married a young writer named Alan Campbell with whom she had a rocky relationship, untroubled by fidelity, but they lived together on-and-off until his death in Parker was a member of the noted Algonquin Round Table in New York . She published three volumes of poetry ( Enough Rope Sunset Gun , and Death and Taxes ), and numerous short stories (her most noted was entitled "Big Blonde"). After she left the staff of the

Dorothy Rothschild Parker
By Daniel Itzkovitz Brilliant, unrelenting, and fiercely witty, Dorothy Rothschild Parker came to signify the urbane and irreverent sensibility of New York City in the 1920s. As an adult, Parker rarely spoke of her family and Upper West Side upbringing, although she often hinted that her past had been tragic. The youngest of three siblings by many years, Dorothy was born on August 22, 1893 to a Jewish father, J. Henry Rothschild, and a Scottish mother, Eliza (Marston) Rothschild. Eliza Rothschild died when Parker was five years old, an event that devastated the child. Soon thereafter, her father, who had made a small fortune in the garment industry, married a strict Roman Catholic, whom Dorothy bitterly disliked. As a young girl, she attended, and despised, a Catholic school in Manhattan, later transferring to Miss Dana's, a boarding school. Henry Rothschild told the school authorities that his daughter was Episcopalian, but her dark Jewishness marked her as an outsider. She would always maintain this image of herself, and in the face of early alienation and many disappointments, she developed a biting and irreverent sense of humor. Late in life, she described herself as "one of those awful children who wrote verses," but despite her writerly inclinations, she left school abruptly at age fourteen, never to return, to take care of her ill father, who was once again a widower. When he died in 1913, the twenty-year-old Dorothy made a living by playing piano at a Manhattan dance school.
