Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Roumania.
Dorothy Parker was born in West End, New Jersey, to a Jewish father and Scottish mother. Her mother died when she was a baby. She was educated at a convent and moved to New York City. She wrote during the day and earned money at night playing the piano in a dancing school. Dorothy Parker made two full-length LP recordings of her work in 1964. A record company, Verve, asked her to read her poems and stories for a record called The World of Dorothy Parker (Verve V-15029). Her other LP is from Spoken Arts called An Informal Hour with Dorothy Parker (Spoken Arts 726). It is the best of the two: Parker reads more than two dozen of her favorite poems. It is from the latter that most of these audio clips are taken. At the time of the recording sessions, Mrs. Parker was approaching age 71. Her voice ravaged by years of Chesterfields and Johnny Walker, this offers a peek at the real Mrs. Parker. She died three years after recording her work. Special thanks to Jon Bradley Snyder of Colorado and Catherine Chodack of New Jersey for loaning me recordings of these 2 LPs. You will need the free Real Player to play the clips. The Information Highway to HELL Nice to see you out on the Information Highway to Hell! Many hoped the Internet would blossom into an on-line Renaissance. Instead, we got porn, spam, and popup advertisements. Calling the Internet "The Information Highway to Hell" is my smug way of noting the as yet unrealized potential of cyberspace. Information Highway to Hell
I have tried to create a site with content, a site interesting enough to spend an hour in. Monologue is a recollection of my life. No better than anyone elses': no worse. Travelogue and Outdoors have pictures along with a written acounts of what I see. My intent with these areas is to give you the feeling of having gone there yourself - to let the viewer experience a place that he or she may never visit. All the pictures enlarge to full screen (in a new window) when you click on them. To close the enlarged pictures, click on the "x" found on the top right of the new window. You can read and *listen* to poems in Poetry. It is may be easier if you have a fast Internet connection, although I do stream the audio if you still use a slow modem.. Please let me know if you can't hear the poems. Live Cam is an experiment to see a live view of Times Square in New York City. If the camera in Times Square is not active, the pictures don't change. Genealogy has family research. High School Choir is recordings of the 1972, 1975 and 1976 Austin High School Choirs (pending).

32. "Dorothy Parker And The Art Of Light Verse"--by John Hollander
dorothy parker and the Art of Light Verse. This is the conclusion of dorothy parker s Fighting Words, first published in a magazine seventy years ago.
http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/m_r/parker/lightverse.htm
Dorothy Parker and the Art of Light Verse John Hollander Say I'm neither brave nor young
Say I woo and coddle care,
Say the devil touched my tongue
Still you have my heart to wear. But say my verses do not scan,
And I get me another man! Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) had a fine ear as well as a sharp tongue, and a good sense of timing and what in musical theater is called "build"the timing and phrasing of a routine to allow a punch line to work. And her best verse is indeed set up for those punch lines. Sassy, tough, sentimental about its own mild ironies and vice versa, her comic verse is most successful in its brevity. She mastered the gag quatrain here in "Experience": "Some men never look at you, / Some men fawn and flatter, / Some men break your heart in two, / And that cleans up the matter." Here the "cleans up," instead of "settling" phrased in some other way, also tellingly implies that the matter of the sexes is a dirty business. Her best writing is epigrammatic. But is all epigram light verse? Is all occasional poetry? Is all satiric verse? Is all comic verse? Light verse comes into existence only at a time when Romantic heaviness has implicitly declared Augustan high-seriousness to be frivolously solemn. For then comes Lord Byron with

    Parker, Dorothy
    Dorothy Parker, 1939 Culver Pictures (1893-1967), writer and critic Born in West End, near Long Branch, New Jersey, on August 22, 1893, Dorothy Rothschild was educated at Miss Dana's School, Morristown, New Jersey, and the Blessed Sacrament Convent School, New York City. She joined the editorial staff of Vogue in 1916 and the next year moved to Vanity Fair as a drama critic. In 1917 she married Edwin Pond Parker II, whom she divorced in 1928, but whose surname she retained in her professional career. Discharged from Vanity Fair in 1920 for the acerbity of her drama reviews, she became a freelance writer. Her first book of light, witty, and sometimes cynical verse, Enough Rope, was a best-seller when it appeared in 1926. Two other books of verse, Sunset Gun (1928) and Death and Taxes (1931), were collected with it in Collected Poems: Not So Deep as a Well (1936). In 1927 Parker became book reviewer, known as "Constant Reader," for The New Yorker, and she was associated with that magazine as a staff writer or contributor for much of the rest of her career. Early in the 1920s she had been one of the founders of the famous "Algonquin Round Table" at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan and was by no means the least of a group of dazzling wits that included Robert Benchley, Robert E. Sherwood, and James Thurber. It was there, in conversations that frequently spilled over from the offices of
